This is a bit sweet to read, but would appreciate some opinions on it.
Is it dodgy or what?
Gut feelings?
Known issues with the imports?
It doesn't say what year it is either...
Would it be an insurance nightmare?
Just curious as to what you guys think of it.
Cheers

Hey Kit, dunno much about these cars but I can tell you insurance would be FOOOLY SIIICK mate! Anything imported would be big bucks.
As an example I was quoted $2000 to insure a turbo'd skyline, pretty much stock!
Most companies wouldn't touch me & I'm old & crusty! (Well 28).
They suggested I call back on my 30 or 35th b'day.
Sourcing parts if the car is damaged is probably tougher & dearer, plus the performance risk factor. Insurance cringe when the hear about any forced induction engines.
I reckon that little thing would fly though!
Its a Familia GTX. They range between $10-15K depending on ks etc. Pretty standard with mild mods and wheels. Parts wont be a problem for the motor as its the same motor run in the Ford Laser TX3 just with a different ecu tuned down for oz.
Its an Imported Turbo car so would assume insurance will be similar to Skylines etc. Just not as much as your engine capacity is a little lower and the car is relatively uncommon in oz which could be a good or bad thing.
No test drives is a bit weird... could be somthing wrong somewhere... whats he trying to hide. Id be inclined to see what they are fetching from the likes of Adelaide Jap and JustJap to get an idea of what the market value in Australia is.

At the importers you can go through different insurance companies than the big common names (AAMI NRMA). For a male under 21 to insure an average WRX at AAMI was $9000. R33 GTS Skyline (Shyt all over STIs {had 17s}) through importers insurance company was $4000. Still expensive but a big difference. (This was at start of 2002)

*laughs* Yeah at the importers you get put onto brokers who are usually underwritten by larger companies.... No they're not AAMI or NRMA, both these companies have smaller 'arms' that do insure imports though.
Any back to the brokers... The brokers job is to find and insurance policy for the car att eh time, they get a cut of the sale without havignt o wear the risk, so to a broker it doesn't matter if it's a turkey of a deal.
Sure there's some deals out there - $1500 for a Soarer with one company I know of for a 21yo driver. But on the most part they're not attractive policies..
ie some import insurace has:
Normal excess on claim $450.... Nothing unusual about that. Then we have excess for: At fault Stacking vehicle $1500, have the vehicle stolen $1500, having the vehicle vandalised NOT COVERED!
I'm not kidding you, you pay $2k to insure a $15K car, then in the second year you're into the it, the car is now insured for $10K thanks tot eh savage grey import depreciation, it gets stolen and written off.
You're down $2K for the first years policy, $2K for the second years policy (becuase the prices never seem to drop - The R34 policy I've been tracking with friends car has been $2500pa for 2 years now), $450 for the excess, and then well the $1500 for the stolen excess...
Mmmm So I get $10K back from the insurer, give them $1950 for the claim, and havign paid them $2K for the policy thats a $3950 LOSS!
Not bad, but I'd rather piss on my shoes int he pub every time I go out that loose that sort of money ;)
