hey guys,

just singed up for this website and i'm woundering if any one with some knowledge could help me in relation to doing up a 94 mazda astina hatch. what is better turbo charging it or supercharge it. it is a 1.8 5 speed manual. if that helps. also what exhaust system should i put with it to get the best sound and performance. also not wanting to spend to much i have a budget. i want to get the best results for the cheapst price. and anyother advice would be greatly apperacited.

thanks

Ok, here's the advice.

Look through the site, use the search function.

There is an entire section on Forced Induction (ie turbo/supercharging) for example. Someone could respond here but it is unlikely you will learn as much as you will if you start looking through the posts which ultimately brought them to what they might say here.

It's not a chore, it is interesting and informative. Have a look around and draw your own conclusions.

Have Fun

for the 1.8 I would not get a supercharger. A s/c need loads of torque because they add load to the engine. Torque is best found in larger engines like a v6 or v8

If you're after some simple power upgrades there's the usual list of tried and true upgrades that are good when you're on a budget.

* cold air intake
* high flowing air filter
* higher rated fuel pressure regulator
* extractors

Suspension upgrades make a great improvement on handling, making the car feel more solid and zippy

Its becoming more common to replace the whole engine with a BPT engine - from the ford laser or mazda familia . This is a big $$ and effort job but brings with it much better performance. These engines are becoming old these days and it may be hard to find a good one - else you'll probably want to have it rebuilt.

Turbo and supercharger will both cost heaps. Kinda hard to do properly within a budget.

Turbo id say is more common, supercharger ive only heard of in an mx5.

firstly, congrats on both joining this community and purchasing a hatch. the guys on here can solve even the trickiest of situations and there is just about no limitations to the amount of things that can be purchased for the hatch versus the hardtop. i wouldn't recomend s/c cost to much for such a small gain. as mentioned above. cold air, better flow,extractors and exhuast really make a difference and don't cost an arm and a leg. Don't know much about turbs as i've never owned one. i apreciate the power that comes from N/A type engine modding. that's why i chose the v6.

Turbs are quick, no joke if you got the money, go nuts. Bare in mind that for a turbo to run well you need basically all of the listed above, except for the extractors, you will need a turbo manifold instead.

Also keep in mind the insurance, that costs an arm and a leg also. Keep it simple initially, exhaust, cold air intake, that type of deal. Enjoy the car at its basics then when the funds are out of this world get a conversion.

Congrats on the BA. There is no reason for why you shouldn't like it. Good luck.

BTW work the suspension, that where you will leave the others for dead. Astina's generally aren't straigh line cars, come hills time or some winding roads and they are absolutelly brilliant.

Whats even better is if you let them talk up thier cars for about 45mins beforehand and only say things like "ah, the astina's ok. Im happy with it but its no race car." and let them rave on and on.

Once they are done and you are in a hill run somewhere and the roads are tight and twisty as hell and your astina is blitzing the pack, that will be one of the most satisfying moments of your life, trust me.
