Ok, maybe not a lot of cash, but am thinking enough to do the cat back exhaust.....

so.....

What do I get, and where do I get it?

2.25" with hot dog or resonator, what type of muffler?

A hotdog with a chambered muffler?

I do not want a big stainless job with a canon ok? It just isn't me.....

Can anyone give me some recommendations here in canberra for a good place to get it done without getting ripped off?

I only want to spend $300 - $350, I figure that's plenty.

Have been told City Exhaust in Braddon are good.
Anyone else got good feedback for me?

A nice burble at idle and off idle, nice and quiet below 4000 with no resonance.....
but maybe a tingle or two above 4?

and what is it with everyone telling me to go 2.5"?????
I have been told that 2.25" will flow nice and the backpressure won't drop off enough to affect the engine......

I am still learnering the details here, so input is appreciated... if you say to me get this or that, please tell me why you think so..... evidence!
If it is because you had x y or z on your car, then tell me what you used, what set up, what brand you had etc..... it all helps fella's and I really do appreciate it!!!!

The exhaust is only as big as the smallest section. Unless you want to sell your boy and spend big on engine mods then 2.25" is more than enough. My HSV killing Cosmo only has 2.25" (more to the story, but not on an Astina page).
If a 2.25" exhaust makes you a girl then smile when you look in the mirror :wink:

I've got a 2.25" mandrel system from the cat back. It's a single entry, dual outlet muffler (looks something like Mal's, Tony's, Miks from the rear). The exhaust is a nice burble at idle and sounds very nice after 4,000rpm! :D Normal driving sounds nice without being too loud.

However, if I went back in time to do it again, I would use only a 2 inch piping from the cat back. That's just my opinion, as I think a 2 inch exhaust would be more suitable for a 1.8 astina! I wouldn't recommend a 2.5" (too big for a 1.8 astina = loss of bottom end power)

I would recommend adding a hotdog resonator (unless you like loud exhaust sounds! :D )

However, by adding the exhaust, the rear seat passengers won't like you very much, well in my astina, the rear seat passengers can hear the droning and can't hear you talk ... but up the front you won't hear it that much! :)

What type of look/appearance are you after (dual outlet or angled cannon N1 style?)

Never ever go 2.5" on a NA astina... I did and regretted it

I went 2 1/4" mandrel bend Exhaust, Extractors, High flow cat, twin muffer/tips and a resonator. its sounds sweet and it goes great. its not that loud ;)

it was done at South Coast Rotary Performance and Exhaust :P

Yeah, City Custom Exhaust in Braddon seems like the place to go. My mate Toby with the Orange 1600 that we blew up at Wakefield is sponsored by them and gets all his exhaust work done there.

They can pretty much design a system to suit whatever you want (as long as you know what you want :wink: )

Toby said that It'd be about 300-350 for my car when he had a look at it (just can't spare the cash) so a 1.8 would be very similar I would imagine.

*nods* one of the best bits of advice is to make sure you feel comforatble witht he worshop you're getting the price from.

They're the 'professionals' and should be able to explain the reasons for sizes, muffler types and noise to expect quite clearly to you.

Likewise they're pretty good at workign out what you want from descriptions...

Exhasut work isn't expensive these days, so anywhere will be quite affordable, unless you go silly with polished stainless ;)

What set up do you have on the Stealth?

I might look at something similar to that, because I like the low sound from it..... I don't want high end notes, the tinny sounding stuff.....

I am not going 2.5" so my maximum is 2.25" or even 2" at this stage, with a resi / hot dog... but interested in what muffler you have on it.

I have also seen a nice tip in powatone that looked kinda like a baffle??? it was a bit weird..... but generally I want classy mods rather than in yer face kinda stuff...... or even something in the middle, I want to enjoy my driving experience

if i was you i would put the same gear but only in 2"from cat back sorry i had to check today for you

My Laser ran a 2.25" exhaust, sports muffler, 3.5" dumpy tip and I think it had a resonator. Sounded like a rotary until the muffler was fixed.

My accent runs a 2" system to a 3A racing muffler, and has 2 resonators. Still fairly loud.

Most popular bet for the 1.8 would be a 2.25" cat back system.

well kitty it depends on what ur plans are down the track
if you only want a nice sound an a little performance stick with 2"
if you are going to do engine moods like timing,chip cams ect go 2.25"
with 2" you decide to add extractors or headers an a high flow cat and a air filter later on down the track then dyno it for best tune an performance it will go better then the 2.25"inch with same specs
big exhausts are for motors that need to breath ie:turbos, full house
works like this the more fuel an air you put in the more combusted gases have to come out so then you have to look at changing your valve size because the standard ones wont let out the volume of gases
so with a stanard 1.8 with 2" u gain 2.25 or bigger you start to lose
