OK

I am now officially confused, so here is a poll to answer a basic question about my catback Zorst

All answers appreciated!

2'' is the standard, but 2.25'' would perform a little better

it is a 1.8 litre car... 2" is more than enough!! why do you need 2.25"?? unnecessary in my opinion... also getting louder too! i'm looking at 2" piping for my car also.
quoted 480 (with canon style muffler) from performance exhaust in ringwood ... any other suggestions?!

but the standard is actually 1 3/4", so to only go to 2" is a waste IMO

I herd on here that if you have the system press-bent you should have it a little larger than mandrel bent. Therefore a 2.25 press would be similar to a 2 inch mandrel??

im with rupt on the standard it 1"1/2 to 1"3/4
2"inch gets my vote

The pipe has a knarly 90 degree bend under the back seat, I'd go 2" with a 90 degree mandrel bend at that point.

Are you talking that 90 degree bend in the hatch or the hardtop?

I was under the impression the hatch didn't have any such hard bends....

*sigh*

Yes Andy, I agree that I want to get on with it, but also don't want to throw my money away, I want to get the best for my money.....

Of course free is the besterest  but if I can't get that then fully investigated and know I am getting the best I can get.... what's the point?

So *raspberry*!!!!!!!

hahahahahahaha!

And c'mon fella's.... the poll is not showing me a clear decider here.... I can't do an Eddie MacGuire (as if I would) and go 50/50 and I am asking the audience......

HELP!!!!!!!

Ooops, my vote didn't really make the decision much easier

I gots a 1.8ltr hatch with 2inch CAT back, which was pretty noisy already. Funnily enough, getting extractors the same size as this made quieter and mucho better in all aspects of driving.

*puts hand up* ummm... who is... 2 inch?

Thanks Smikey...

To be honest I am about to give up and throw in the towel as too hard....

There is no clear direction here, and I can't seem to make sense of it all.

And until I can, what is the point?

I am now just getting frustrated with the whole deal....

*grumbles*

Maybe I will just sit on it for a while and see if anyone can give me a good reason to pick one style over the other, and then I can make a decision....

In the meantime, I will just go shoe shopping.....

:? I've been trying to find this out too Kitty it is very frustrating as replies from all the people who I asked thinking I would get a clear Get This answer have given different replies. Seems every second person says 2" and the next 2.25". I have voted 2" because I have spoken to a few guys this week who argue loss of back pressure in our 1.8L astinas if we go bigger than 2". I am at this point only leaning this side of the fence also because of the extra bit of noise a 2.25" will create.

I also have an issue with extractors seems in theory they are great at top end and loss of power at bottom end and fuel economy loss may occur with extractors fitted. Ppl I have spoken to with extractors haven't noticed power loss. Smikey can u give me ur opinion here :?: and anyone else who can help. Cheers

Dont remeber a 90deg turn under the rear seat on my car when we did the exhaust. Pretty sure it was just a bunch of 45/60/30s. I have a pic of the system at home (At work atm) so will post up when I find it.

If you going to mandrel bend 1 turn, you may as well pay the extra money to mandrel bend the whole system in which 2" would be more then enough for a casual driver looking for a slight gain in performance.

If you press bend it, 21/4" so it becomes a 2" system in the turns.

Mandrel Bent 2" or Press Bent 21/4" would be my vote... but you already know this as we have talked about it 100 times. Just go down the exhaust shop, ask em what he recommends for maximum power gains, lowest noise pollution and get it installed and give us some peace :)

Im waiting for the next poll - should I or should I not do my exhaust??? Do I buy shoes instead....

Joely,
I originally bought my 1997 DOHC 1.8ltr hatch with a 2" CAT back exhaust. It didn't sound so good, a little bit farty, enough resonance to shake a small bridge, although this sound did make u want to push it harder. There was a rattling, which i just associated with some bit of the CAT falling out and rumbling around.

Was looking into performance upgrades etc. pod etc., decided to just get panel air filter and spend the cash on extractors. 4-2-1 interference design. And honestly, the best money i'll probably ever spend apart from getting a turbo/ supercharger or tinkering witih the engine itself.

Before extractors, the car only really picked up after 3.5K with a turbo'esque kind of pull (hardly in comparison), the extractors improved overall response, even more so, (you could imitate a L plater bunny hop in second gear) and the rpm pickup after 3.5K was not as noticeable because of the overall increase in hp? torque? both? who knows, but it was fantastic. Even more so, i believe fuel consumption decreased because of the venting of pressure in the engine through larger extractors. The increased airflow/ lack of crappy exhaust sound, meant that i could hear this mad high pitch whine at higher rpm's 4K and above.

Noise levels also dropped. Original extractors to larger exhaust to larger tip = a trumpet kind of sound, but with the extractors, 2" all the way through so u can imagine there's no real amplifying noise effect cept at the tip in my case.

I think 2" is plenty for CAT back if that back pressure loss thing is true. But even then 2" is plenty, the noise i get is very pleasant at cruising (almost like nothing has been done to the car) and even more pleasant when ur pushing it above 3K. (haven't ripped out resonator yet either)

4-2-1 extractors = overall power increase throughout rpm range (road usage)
4-1 = up to 10% gains or something at very high rpm area

as previously enlightened by other members in "extractors worth it"

Seeing as i'm happy with 17" wheels, CAT back, extractors, next major upgrade would probably be shocks/ suspension/ sway bars since i'm really happy with the acceleration right now, and need to get rid of some understeer (need new tires too + wheel balance) $$

2" wil be great & not too noisy on a 1.8. I run that on my 1.6 with headers & it breaths well. The noise is mainly from the muffler set up.

Don't need 2 1/2", that's rediculous. My 323 B6T only runs 2 1/2" & it supports a sooby h'dryer & will have the 1.8 dump on it!

cause someone voted in the poll, it brings it back to the new posts..

and cause of the age of the poll, and since there have been forum updates, only shows the most recent voters, in which the culprit is RickBrah! :p
