when i get my SP20 in a couple of months i am thinking of putting a new stereo system in it. the system is as follows

-mp3 head unit
-6" 2ways in front
-6"x9" 3ways in back
-12" sub

is this too big of a system for the car. will a second 12" sub be too big.

also, what are your thoughts on Sony. has anyone had troubles with sony car stereos.

BTW - odd12c, your SP20 has got it goin on. nice job bud.

Your best bet would be to run 2x 10" subs of a monoblock amp..

i recommend staying away from sony speakers, but their head units and amps are ok from what Ive heard.

subs, well it just depends on what u want it to sound like.
2x12s can be a bit much. especially in small, lightweight cars like the sp20.

One 12" sub should be plenty if its given enough power. If for some reason you're still not happy with it, you can always add a second sub later. If I were you, I'd ditch the 6x9s - there's no reason for them if you have sub. If you're after some sound from the back, just chuck in a pair of coaxials in the rear doors. I assume you'll be getting an amp as well - at least for the sub, but I'd recommend amping the front speakers as well. Have you considered component speakers up front instead of 2 ways? What's your budget in all of this btw?

I totally agree on the ditch the 6x9 sentiments - they add distortion to the sound (by pure design) and as you are planning to get a sub anyway they wont add any benefit.

Basically they are designed as acompromise between quality and bass for anyone who isn't running a sub.

Just my 2cents worth :-)

$1500 will get you a fairly decent system - does that budget include installation?
In any case, I'd probably allocate that money as follows

MP3 HU $400
4 channel amp - $3-400
Front speakers $300
Sub $300
which should leave you ~$200 for cabling, sub box, installation (may need more to cover this though)

Hey birdman, check my sig to see what i've put in... the components are a bit pricey, it's cost me almost $4g's all up but sounds sweet no matter what volume and i've run over 140db at SPL days a number of times. However, i reckon spending more on the fronts as i believe that theyare one of the most critical parts in any system. Spend a bit on sound deadending the doors to... this will help heaps. As for subs, the boot isn't huge and one 12 or 15 in a well built and tuned box should satisfy most ppls. Oh, and good wiring helps avoid unwanted noises...
