sounds like your gasket is gone.
did you push it particularly hard, or has it overheated on you recently.

so your losing water and you have oil in the cooling system... that sucks. one of my customers has a corolla with a 7AFE engine and there was oil in the cooling system (water was not in the head). i took the head off and found absolutely nothing that indicated in a blown head gasket or head. sent it off to a head reconditioner to get it flow tested and hot water tested and they said everything is absolutely normal.
we ended up replacing the radiator, timing kit, water pump, thermostat and did the head on it just to be on the safe side.... 3 days later the distributor goes.
your car could just be a big coincidence that the head gasket decided to go. also the astina shouldnt be chewing fuel. if it does it can be any or all of these that havnt been replaced
air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs.
there is a limit to how much u can machine the surface of the head. if u cannot machine it anymore then you may be up for a 2nd hand head to be machined. either way IF u do decide to rebuild that head again. find out if it was the gasket or the head that is blown on it. also im curious as to IF that head had even been rebuilt.. maybe your mechanic used "seal-up" to try and seal the holes in. (im not saying all mechanics are shifty... just need honest mechanics out there)

yeah its bizzare with my car the head thats on it wasnt the originall it was a separate rebuilt head
it doesnt get hot only got hot yesterday due to a hose leak gettin fixed
but yeah it does very slowly leak water i have to fill up at leas once a week
i drove it today to take the kids to school and it drove perfect

i wasnt real happy with the people that did the head i got the "not right feeling" maybe i was looking to much into this and it was just a accident who knows .
but the mechanic did the botton and he sent the head off down the raod to separate place to get rebuilt
but anyway i will get this investigated i will go to someone else to get it done ive been qouted roughly 500-700 to get this fixed

i suggest u should stop driving the car and get the head repaired as soon as you can. better to get things fixed asap than to wait till it dies out on you as you're driving
