View Full Version : RPM's per KMPH for a 1996 V6?

Can anyone give me an idea of the rpm at around 120kmph for a 1996 V6 hatch? I noticed that the red line is at 7000rpm and the rpm at 120kmph was on around 5000rpm. Is this normal?

I've heard that the rpm's for the V6 are particularly high (relative to say a 1.8L) as this is where the power is. Any advice would be appreciated.

for a manual that sounds wrong.

In which gear?
Fourth would be best as it's 1 to 1,
One engine revolution into the gearbox equals one out to the diff.

Yeah - I was sitting in fifth. I've noticed that the lower gears (up to third) reach around the 3500rpm mark (at third that is - obviously the lower gears sit on less than that - idle's normal at 750 - 800rpm) then when you change up to fourth and fifth at speed the rpm's increase up to around the 4000 - 5000 rpm mark.

I'm thinking of just taking it into Mazda for a post purchase once over just to be sure - I may just be panicking about nothing - you know how it is when you drive a different car for the first few times and you notice everything noise etc. The performance isn't affected tho - infact it howls along - like it just wants to be let loose.

Mine does just under 4000rpm @ 120km in 5th. But 4th gear is revved out to limiter at just over 160km, which is a bit odd :?

Sirex - your's manual or auto? Is just under 4000rpm @ 120km a bit low?

Hey guys and girls,
Just took the car out for a blast on the freeway. My V6 does about 4000rpm at 120kmh in 5th. Just put in the K+N panel filter a few days ago, so not sure if this would of had any effect either.

You've got to love the purr...... :D

How much was the filter by the way?

Hello,
$113 incl freight and GST, from Autospeed.com. Spend over $200 and get freight for free!

Hope this helps....

Was the power increase very noticeable? I had a K & N drop in filter on my 92 Astina SP (1.8 DOHC) and noticed an increase. Must be wicked on the 2.0 V6!!!

Tell me, am I worrying uneccesarily about the rpm variance (if it really is that)?

Manaul, man!

Yours sounds on the high side, but its not really the end of the world!

There are a number of possibilities:
- wrong tyres
- worn clutch
- something to do with the idle setting

Of the top of my head that's all I can think of, but I know there's more. Is your clutch slipping dude cause that would be my guess?

Tony

Thanks Sirex, Nah - everythings sweet and the tyres (which I did think of) are spot on for the standard 5-spoke alloys. Clutch is operating okay - y'know, I have a feeling that it just might be the fact that I'm not used to the gear ratios and high revving engine that the V6 is compared to the 1.8 DOHC - I mean , if it's redlining at 7000!

Anyway, I'll swing by Mazda and have them give it the once over - better safe than a few thou out of pocket.

Yeah same with mine, about 4000rpm in 5th at 120kph. about 4500rpm - 5000rpm in 4th at 110-120kph.

Does 205kph in 5th at near 6000rpm (wasn't really looking at the tacho, was too scared to look for too long) but still had some more go but the nads were getting smaller.

Hmmm, strange! I only got mine up to about 175 before I ran out of road, in 5th I was doing around about 5000rpm, but had revved out 4th gear at 160. Does this sound right, it seems a little low to me as some cars have a higher top speed in 4th rather than 5th?

Is that before you hit the limiter? Don't know of any of the Aussie cars that have limiters which is why mine kept on keeping on. Car could do more if I wanted it to but it was dark and I didn't have that much of a death wish.

Sirex has gone offline, but if its any help he sent this through to me ;-)

...what pissed me off was that I didn't hit the speed cut, which is what I was really interested in!...

Hope that helps :)

I think I get it now. Yeah, mine would probably hit the rev limiter in 4th at 170 too, but 5th had heaps more to give over that (evidently). Hmmmm... that is interesting.

thanks guys - I think it may be a faulty tacho given that everything mechanical is ok.

205kph? Wicked! What's the world like from an Astina at that speed? Bet it was howling!

Hey guys,

Sorry for the late reply Tony, but work etc. Yeah the K+N panel filter is all good, increases low end pick up noticably and bit more on acceleration in 4th on the freeway etc. Definite improvement.

Looking at doing a CAI sometime soon. ABC have you done it on the V6? How did you find it? Cause its a bit more cramped in the engine bay then the 1.8L. Just getting the fricken air filter box off past the hoses was a struggle at times! :D

Yeah, all our jappa's come with those speed cuts to the ECU somewhere between 175-195, I know its not hard to bypass, but why do you need to?

I just wanted to see where the car cut out. Over here there are no empty straight roads, and this is not something I will not test out down the main city motorway, unlike some! Anyways, I eventually found a nice destered straight road, gave it **** and got to 175 but a corner was rapidly approaching. I was revving out the gears to just below the rev limiter and was surprised that I was doing 163+- @7100rpm in 4th, when I know of other cars that achieve greater top end speeds in 4th rather than 5th.

something to think about... :?

Jap laws mandate a top speed of 180kmh in Japan (that's why the speedos only go that far). I've had my aussie delivered upto 200kmh, it took about 5km from 80kmh and about 700meters to get back to 100kmh. I've stopped the Cosmo in 200 meters but the brakes were cactus after that trick (at Calder).

I have had mine to 225km/hr on the clock at 6900rpm

With the 18" wheels and the 5% difference that works out to 235km/hr

My goal was to see 240km/hr on my speedo but I dont have the guts to push it.

Thought I remembered that Tony had pushed his a little further than I had. Cats eyes on the centre of the road turned into one big blur and I couldn't see very far at night - Was quite scary!

CAI is pretty nice - gives a bit better response when putting your foot down and engine tends to breath a bit better higher in the rev range. Haven't extended to the K&N filter yet so that should make it even better. Once the Uni semester is over I'm thinking of making a fibreglass tube for the intake instead of the Ag pipe so we'll see how we go.

I had so much trouble getting to 190km/hr with the stock motor

Tony

Figured out the rpm issue - I think. Y'know - it'd help if I shifted up to 5th when in 120kph. Checked it out on the freeway this morning and sat on 100kph @ around 3000rpm and 120kph @ around 3500+rpm (give or take - I was taking mental notes) both in 5th. I also noticed that it sits happily in 4th up to 100+kph hence my probably not changing up before as I didn't notice the engine straining as I wasn't used to the V6. Saweeet.

Off to the shops to buy a K & N.

i got to 205 with the NA motor - got to 180 fairly easily but struggled after that

and only ever did about 170 turbo, but it got there a damned sight quicker!
