well, after 8 FRICKIN WEEKS i finally got to drive my car for the first time as a turbocharged beast.
and all i can say is...
..wait for it...
[b:post_uid0]OH. MY. GOD.[/b:post_uid0]
it's f%$ken ACE!! the grin still hasn't left my face. it has soooooo been worth the wait...
i don't actually have it back yet. *sigh* the spraypainter is a slack bitch and the bootlid had only just been sprayed (badges removed) when i turned up to get it last night. but i took is for a spin round the block (without the bootlid LOL) and i was blown away :D
it's running about 7psi at the moment, but it's more than enough! with the rebuilt turbo its just a smooth delivery of power right thru the revrange.
i give myself about 2 weeks before i lose my licence *:;): *:p[/color:post_uid0]

Its almost 3 years for me now Dan and that smile never
goes. I have never got bored of sneezing round town
and have the constant problem of never wanting to drive
slow. I often drive a gear down to keep me to the speed
limit cause I know that if I don't watch it will be cruising
around at like 140. Never drive in a 70 zone in 5th cause
end up doing 100 within minutes. The only time I have
ever frowned is when the gearboxes didn't want to play
anymore, but hopefully you have that covered.
Well Done

i love this car! :D no - not like that :p
i had soooo much fun on the weekend!
gotta say i love this close-ratio gearbox. it's not much shorter-geared - doing about 500 more rpm in 5th at 100 - but the shifts are sooooo much better than my standard box was.
traction is the big problem of course :;):
i took a mate who used to have a MY00 WRX for a ride, and seat-of-the-pants reckons it's a bit quicker from 1-100ish, bit loses ground from 100-180...[/color:post_uid0]

BPT engine

not the cheapest way, but i'd rather do it once and do it right. and i should be able to get into the 12s with this setup, without breaking anything (like the gearbox) or running out of puff. that's the eventual aim anyway[/color:post_uid0]

24-12-2002, 01:59 AM
u c, since listenin to u ppl and ur turbod astinas, i was thinkin of puttin off the rx7 for a year or so and spend the money (bout $7G) on a turbo conversion on the astina.
but if its gona b up near $10G, the i dont feel its all worth it. theres got 2 be a cheaper way???[/color:post_uid0]
Rupewrecht
24-12-2002, 02:20 AM
you could do it a lot cheaper that what i did it, but because i went aftermarket manifold/turbo/computer and the gearbox, it worked out a lot more.
i mean, Lantis did his for about $6k!
if u used the factory computer/factory turbo, smaller exhaust it would be closer to 7k i'd think...[/color:post_uid0]
BigMal
24-12-2002, 02:27 AM
Nah if you simply got a half cut for $2500 and some little
extra bits could do it for around $4k to $4500. Geoff did
the conversion of his car for that sort of money. Its only
when you want the pretty and shiny stuff that the price
goes up like that.

Mal[/color:post_uid1]
O-LYM-PIC
24-12-2002, 02:34 AM
yeah but lantis' did his himself, didnt he???
mal does that $4.5G include labour, or what?? i just want the base turbo motor now, and later, slowly, i'l get the rest done.[/color:post_uid0]
BigMal
24-12-2002, 02:58 AM
So you don't want to do any work yourself then ??
Cost me $500 remove and replace the motor and another
$500 for wiring of the ECU. The motor work was done
local at Sutho so can tell you where for that but I won't
recomend the wiring guy so you would need to sort that
one out yourself. There is a wiring place in Kirrawee you
could ask not sure how much or how good he is.
regards
Mal[/color:post_uid1]
breaking into the 12's is a big acheivement in FWD car... that would need to be with some sort of slicks/intermediates yeah? top effort to part with that sort of cash for the astina..that's a heap of cash..but as you said, quality workmanship should last a bit longer (if you even rev it under redline!!)
when does boost come on dan? under 3000rpm? isn't the size a t04? how are you handling the lag?
so... when do i get a ride in burgandy beast?[/color:post_uid0]
O-LYM-PIC
24-12-2002, 03:05 AM
nah mal, i dont think im able 2 do any of the work myself.
mal what did u do urself?? how much did urs cost all up???[/color:post_uid0]
Rupewrecht
24-12-2002, 03:13 AM
i'm pretty sure i'll need to run slicks to get there, but thats the ultimate goal :D and it's not like i need back seats and a spare LOL
boost starts spooling up about 2800 and i'd say is full on song at about 3300...i'm not really sure! somewhere around 3k anyway - depends what the temperature is! turbo is a t03/t04 bb hiflowed hybrid. it's quite smooth spooling so no problems
there.
and whenever you want - i'm working tomorrow and i think friday... what about lunch tomorrow? i can take an 'extended' lunchbreak and meet you close to your work if you want![/color:post_uid0]
BigMal
24-12-2002, 03:20 AM
I could have done the spanner work, but couldn't be
bothered and only have the single car so needed it
ASAP so farmed it out. Made a couple of little learning
mistakes so cost me a little but the basic conversion
was about $6 which included $1000 for the FMIC, $1000
for 3" exhaust, $300 BOV etc. Have bought other goodies
since like turbo timer etc which keeps on adding to it.

that sounds good. i no the guy in kirrawee who does the wiring work so i'l ask him about that.
i also cant wait 2 long 4 the car to come back.
$6G i can afford, but like anythin with cars, the cost always keeps goin up when things go wrong. id like to do the conversion but dont want to overcapitalise on the car, when i could get an rx7 an start fixing that up. prob with that is, that cars r expensive to keep and if i can keep it 2 one car, then i can spend the extra on fixing up the 323.
decisions decisions decisions[/color:post_uid0]

Sounds good, the mechanic guys are Shire Auto in Kirrawee.
They are pretty familiar with Astina's now after working on
my car for years. Tony should be able to tell you whether
its worth getting the wiring harness which would make the
diff between a motor only which is what I bought or a motor
& wiring or lastly a half cut. The latter being the best if
you will be happy with the factory IC and piping.
