View Full Version : Hi.
Hi im the new guy. :D
Ive been looking at the astina for awhile, and i gotta say they r cool. Only problem is that i cant drive a manual soooooo im stuck with an auto. :( My question is which auto is better? Oh and im talkin bout the BA astinas. Is the auto better in the 1.8? Or the 2L?
Thx a bunch. :D

An auto 2L picks up surprisingly well, I'm sure they're not so good on the fuel economy, while the 1.8 is probably economical but it feels pretty gutless! IMHO you sholud learn to drive manual, if not get the v6

Will, I'm with Sirex. Pay for two lessons on a manual and you'll be fine. You'll save that much in petrol and purchase price, as well as having a quicker car thats more fun to drive. Either way, go the 2.0l if u have to go auto.
Welcome!

I'm going to agree with the guys and say GO THE MANUAL
You will have so much more fun!!!
It is worth it.
A friend of mine was going to get her auto license and I talked her around to manual, and she said it was the best thing she ever did!!!
Get a friend to help you just in a carpark to learn the friction point and take offs in first gear. Changing gears is easy after that. Get your folks to help out too if you can.
Seriously, the cars are so much better in manual. An auto sucks your power in the transmission....... you want that power through your wheels not your transmission for the *grin factor*
Do it!!!

Oh, and welcome!!!!!!! :D

Well I must be the odd one out - I'm quite happy with my 1.8 auto. Normally I would cringe at the thought of an auto, but as we do a heap of open road driving it makes life alot easier as it gives you a free hand to eat drink etc with.
The 1.8 has a lot less torque than the 2l, however with a few easy mods such as CAI and a K&N filter I have found it to have more than enough guts to get me around.
I suppose it depends on what you are after...
- the auto definatley isn't as sporty or fun to drive, but it is more versatile/convinient.
- the 1.8 doesn't have the grunt of the 2, but its definatley a bit nicer on the fuel economy (and with a couple of easy mods, the 1.8 can be just as quick as a stock standard 2l that I have tried).
As normally there is only my partner and I (hence no weight), the 1.8 is perfect (in saying that - we were originally looking for the 6cyl, but this 4 we found was just to cheep to go past! And looking back it was a good choice).

i own an auto 96 v6 astina...:( poor me but i sorta was given the car so i cant complain... i have no problem with the auto but they r laggy so i would say get the v6..and the fuel consumption isnt that bad, 430-440ish outa a 40L tank with city only driving....
the v6 have enough get up and go....

Another vote for manual.
The manuals are more popular. I am a great advocate of learning how to operate a car better. If someone offered you a performance car for a weekend and you couldn't drive it you'd kick yourself

P.S. Sirex, isn't yours a Jap spec V6?

Oh, dont get me wrong, as far as getting your licence, go for the full option so you have the choice of driving the manual. I would also recommend your first car should always be a manual as once your've had one its like riding a bke (and you can just jump in any manual later on without a problem).

JDM, yo!
Thx for the replies. That seems to be pretty good fuel economy for the v6, so ill be looking out ofr one of those now. But if i come by a really cheap 1.8, i think i might jump onto that and when i get enough cash maybe do some mods.
I wish i could do it in a manual! But *sigh* I dont mind any astina will do :D

Welcome Will
You'll kick yourself in the future if you get your manual licence theres nothing like driving a manual rather than being driven by an auto! Well IMHO
Cmon get a manual dude!

Chris
Im goin for my Ps on wednesday :D Hrm thats quite a distance lol im out west near parramatta. Oh btw im 19, get my Ps, then start hunting for an astina. Think it might take me a month or two. Gonna go for auto first, its a shame but its more convenient right now....

Heya Will, if it's only those two little things you'll rock it in next time.
They're no fun but a necessary evil ;)
Hehe ths fellas. Next ones in two weeks. Least now i know where the 50 zones are, never had an actual lesson from an instructor soooo.....

Getting leasons from an instructor are useful for two reasons;
1. They teach you how to drive to pass the test.
2. The testers know them and to some degree trust their judgement on wether you can or can't drive.
3. They are profesionals and less likely to get emotional and ground your ass.

The instructors also tell you what the testers will look for.
They can give you mini tests, if you like to call them that, so that you know that the actual testers are going to keep eyes open for the 10 to 3 hand positions on the steering wheel etc.
But sounds like you did a good job.
Invest in two or three lessons so you have some good grounding and the testers think you aren't a smarty bum too!
You will have no hassles at all next time.
Kick arse!
