View Full Version : Weirdness!! What happened when I was driving?

Hi there - I'm sorry I'm not really sure where this goes, it might have to be moved again for being under wrong topic!
Anyways, to the point.
I was waiting to turn left into the Hay St (a main road), it has been a drizzly day in Perth, so with a small gap coming up I put a little more to the pedal, and find my car skidding a little bit. Then what happens as I keep my foot on the accelerator is the car just kept jerking/shuddering for about a whole second, after which I've straightened back up, and continued to accelerate to 60 not to annoy the car behind me.
I can't explain the shuddering? I can't reproduce it, and the only thing my layman knowledge would attribute it to would be ABS kicking in (repetitive braking?). But the issue is I didn't have my foot on the brakes at all.. Any idea?

wheelspin... or in hoon talk, "you dropped a skid!"

To reproduce it plant the accelerator in first gear when going up a wet hill, its normal. To avoid implement less throttle and more clutch :D You probably would have noticed the speedo showing a higher speed than what you were actually traveling at.

Yeah I understand the concept of wheelspin, but it was a bit like, intermittent, almost jerky... is that still the average hoon wheelspin?

Its just axle tramp from breaking traction, it sort of bounces. Its all normal.

you were spinning the wheels intermittently. less broom broom more clutch

On the subject of this...
I've spent most of my driving 'hoon' years in a RWD. Most of the FWD's I've driven, have tramped the front wheels. The SP20 is no exception.
My question is, are there any mods I can do to the Astina to stop this? It must be horrible for the CV's and engine mounts. I feel bad for them, and I would like them to stay friends with me.. :)
A few years back, a mate and I put an injected familia XG turbo motor, (e5t?), into a white lightning 323, build number 499 I think.. That thing would resist traction quite enthusiasticly in first, second, and third, but tore front engine mounts to shreds due to wheel tramp. Anyway, I got sick of buying mounts, and used a ratchet strap to hold the motor down! Dodgy I know.. However, no more tramp. Actually improved handeling too..
I can't very well strap the SP20's motor down, it's not that kinda car. Is there an answer? Sometimes wheelspin is a good thing ;)
Cheers, Greg.

solution? weapon r engine dampener maybe. someone has one for sale on here

yeah i've noticed it too, annoying as hell, i avoid it cos i know its gonna do damage over time, i found its not as bad if u get em spinning when turning (steering not dead ahead), and i've only tried it in the dry!
Rupe suggested to me to get better quality engine mounts and LSD, probably a little to expensive for my liking atm :P

ah yes,
ive had this, it sucks hard because tou just wait for something to go snap.
there's really not much you can do, either give it less or more power before releasing t clutch, or like suggested - use the clutch, If you need to get through a tight gap, loads of revs and a controlled clutch will get you the best result (much like a hard take off)
make it get traction or make it really spin. If your about in between it will get that jump/jerk thing happening because it spins and when it gets traction in jerks everything it connected to.
LSD is a good solution, but even with an LSD it can happen, but not as common,
but its big $$$ spent on something that can be eliminated with a bit of practice.

I've got solid engine front/rear engine mounts, and this fixes the problem of axle tramp. It's usually the rear that tears first, as it gets a lot of stress placed on it. You soon get used to a bit of added vibration.

my rear enigne mount feels like its on its last legs.
where do you get soid ones from, what kinda $$ difference is there as opposed to the cushy ones.

I got mine custom made by a company down here. I think it was about $120, but i needed to supply a stock mount so they could make the new insert.

Thanks guys. All very good answers.
About the clutch control, I have comes to realise, fast spinning, or popping the clutch reduces the problem. The main time it really annoys me is when leaving a corner and powering down. Without the clutch. As the front wheels break the slightest traction... Bang Bang.. Keeping the car away from this point, is a massive detriment to performance.
In regards to solid mounts. I guess I'm at a catch 22. Solid mounting the engine will drive trin mental.. :)
The slightest rattle in the car brings a barrage of 'rattle hunting' with drives me mental.
I made a solid mount for the diff housing of the RX7 because the pirelli P-zero Rossi's would rather turn the diff then put up with 'hektik' launches. :p

This changed the whole car. Definant and real handeling improvement. ALOT of NVH!
Do those 'engine dampeners' actually do something!? I thought they were a wank? I will have to do some research. Anyone using one and have an unbiased opinion on their effectiveness?
Cheers guys, Greg.

Crap.
ummm, ill probably go with a stock one in that case, unfortunatelly i haven't got time to look into that and run around too much.

Ah, my solid mounts are solid Polyeurethane mounts in the original metal mount casing, not solid metal.
So there's still some give, but not as much as stock. They're 85 Durometer solid, vs 55-60 hollow for the Mazdaspeed ones, and 45 hollow for the stock ones.

I see.. I've never tried making them from HDPE.. can't be that hard. I'll either wait till one breaks, or hunt up a second hand one, and give it a shot. Do you have any photos of yours?
I've used HDPE to make bushes before, but never thought of mounts.
Cheers, Greg.

I knew i had pics of them somewhere...just took a bit to find them.
This is the front gearbox mount.

I don't have any pics of the rear, but it's the same sort of thing. Except i drilled a few holes thru it to give it a bit more 'give'

It's on the list :)
I'll make some up for the 'test nimbus' first ;)
Cheers, Greg.

Firstly, engine dampners are NOT wank factor, they are the only reason why SR20 fanboys dont have therir engine hanging off steel wire....SR20's are known for being ultra torquie...these things saved mounts and possible $$$ on bang....
Anyway, you can easily make poly engine mounts with a tube of polyurethane and the mounts out of the car.
Simply pull out the mounts (torque mounts/ front and rear),get some masking tape and mask up on side of the mount, grab the mount and put some urethane in, smooth it off and let it set, put em back in and away we go...simple, oh yeah dont forget to take the masking tape off..lol...

I've heard this works quite well, without making the NVH too much more than stock.
