Hey, the other day i was like :( ::::
i have a 91 astina SP n the ****ing peice of plastic that runs from around the front windscreen to the drivers door
n from the bonet to the roof broke, the plastic gave up after 12 years
after ringing around to find a replacement one i found that you cannot buy them from the wreckers but MAZDA has new ones
only probelm is that they want $175 for it
i asked them whether that was right n they said yes.
there is no more than $5 of plastic in the ****ing thing.
I HATE MAZDA dealerships more than anything
they have always been over priced and now this just isnt fair as well.
has anyone else found a cheaper alternative?? i am about to try to fibreglas the inside of it back together

Ahhhh but Mazda has had to store that part since probably 1993 (the last of that shape Astina)... They've had to pay for that part back then, and now need to recoup the investment.
$175 is a lot of $$ for some plastic agreed, but the sheer fact you can get it at all says a lot for Mazdas dedication to supporting their cars in Australia. Your shoudl try getting the same part for say a Holden Calibra ;)

I agree with Aaron about the 'local' models I.E. if you want something for a VP commodore your best bet is aftermarket.
You can get almost any Mazda part through the dealerships, even steering rods for 1967 Mazda 1500 sedans.
I don't agree with the Mazda parts pricing policy (see anything to do with driving lights) but their commitment to their product is very good.

Rod you've heard the story about Mazda re-tooling to make a certain Aussie a brand new 10a rotor housing for his first run Cosmo?
Apparently they retooled to make it, made a small run of spare for stock and sold this bloke the housing for the same price as a 13B housing...
Not bad form. I know we never had trouble getitng parts for the RX5 or the 626 in the early to mid 90s.... and we ordered some pretty weird parts ;) Then again what part of an RX5 wasn't weird in some way ;)

Andrew,
Keep checking wreckers. Try Mazbits near Parramatta and i think theres another Mazda-only 2nd hand parts dealer. They get whole cars in from Japan and sell whatever. Also, for mechanical bits AutoOne/ Repco have been good eg water pump and engine mounts were much cheaper through them eg less than half of Mazda's price. But not sure if they sell parts like what u need!
Worth a go i guess.

That's a good point Aaron. Didn't occur to me that they've been holding the parts... certainly got better things to do than remake bits for old cars. like making new ones  . That brings some understanding for their high prices but still think some items may be a bit over the top.

Yeha sorry, for that part its not old and its not second hand, mazda are actually producing it as a new part. thats why i am quite pissed off about the cost.
I have had no luck at any wreckers around newcastle area in Australia.
tryed fibreglass but not too srtong.
the problem is thatt the clips screwed to the roof piullar which hold the bit on are too tight, whuch is the reason over time the part is stuffed.
it does not need to be held on as tightly as it desgined.
i think i might try carbon i guess

well I wish Mazda South Africa was like that , here if they dont have it on the shelf
then its tough luck , even if u offer to pay twice the normal price for it

Don't think you'll find Mazda still producing it. Most (I say again, most) manufacturers do all the parts runs for warehouse stock only during the life of the car on the showroom floor. It's then stored and slowly metered out over the following years.
The tooling is often sold off to OEM clone companies who then produce the parts for a few years after that on behoalf of the manufacturer before the manufacturer stops stocking them altogether. It's about demand.
In Australia there is a rule requiring reasonable access to parts for a minimum of 10 years after the sale of the vehicle. That means the parts should be able to be procured. It counts for maintenance and routine repair components only.
