The other day whilst picking up my girlfriend i was driving up to a set of lights behind a Mitsubishi ES Lancer. All of a sudden it stopped and i prung straight into the back of it. The weird thing is There was no damager to his car (bare in mind we were going rather slow no more then 20) but still the front of my 1993 BG Astina where the badge is pretty much imploded no structural damage just aesthetically. I'm glad my car is sooooooft lol
But i'm freaking out if his bumper fell off on the way home thats easily 1k to replace ;s

Haha yea i got insurance lol and Ozy lol its not the fact that i was going 30kms it was that his car had ZERO damage and my front bar bent straight in...it was a soft arse plastic lancer ffs.

hahaha, oops maybe mine is a little to soft then!
were you braking hard?
same thing happened to me... except my front wheels were locked and i hit the back of a '92 hyundai lantra... i damaged the front bar, munted my bonnet to the point that i couldn't see any more, destroyed my radiator, smashed headlight and bent drivers guard...
i didn't even crack his rear bumper...
the reason? the front of my car was so low under brakes that i actually got down underneath his car so damge to his car was minimised

Mmmm Good point. That may be why i did Jack all damage to his lancer and my front bar now looks like the letter V.

Yeah the BG is renowned for its soft front. But that's a good thing, for safety's sake. Frankly I'd rather injure my car than injure myself.
If you look at the ANCAP rating for our car it's three stars, which is really good for a small car that's up to 19 years old, and especially for a car without airbags. And it gets two ticks for pedestrian safety too, presumably because of the hectically low bonnet line.
So yes, the BG will almost always come off second best. But we're probably better for it in terms of safety. I'd rather have my insurance company pay for damage to third party property than pay for their medical bills...

zappy hit the back of my car and completely rooted his front end. whole lot got shunted backwards. my damage? bent muffler and scratched rear bumper. more extensive inspection showed a couple of cracked ribs in the bumper. hardtops are solid :)

while having an argument with an ex-girlfriend while leaving Harbourtown at the coast, turning left at a set of lights to merge with traffic, thought the old POS 86 magna infront had gone, when I thought I had a chance to find a spot in traffic, looked forward and BAM, hit the magna at 10k's. His damage was a bit of paint off the bumper, nothing major, MY damage? Busted left headlight, corner of the bumper had caved in & the bonnet & support bar were creased... $4500 to fix!!!

:O shiiiiiite a friend of my who has a BJII was reversing out of a car park n wasnt looking n swung it to early. all in all 5km/h + reverse gear + steering wheel to the left + a carpark support post = caved bumper + busted right fender + busted right light. what r our cars made of paper mache??

They're designed to crumple, and keep the passenger cabin intact. Simple as that.

yea but so are all other cars for a long time now. these just crumple a little too easy :p which is good and bad. good because it decelerates you at a much slower and thus safer rate while in a potentionally fatal car incident, but bad because of the wallet impact on a nonserius accident.. im glad i have insurance but :)

indeed. hardtops are just that... HARD
i tapped a back of an alfa a while back, while still riding the clutch - so 5km if that
his back was fcuked
bumper hell bent, and falling off - literally
smashed tail light
bent bar support
not nice at all
me: i had a cracked fog light. not broken, just cracked
and some minor red paint that had rubbed off which polished right out.
so yeah, hardtops are friggen solid as

Damn hard tops i must be wary of :S ;p
The worst damage i have ever seen at slow speed was my mates ute, he was stopped at the lights and a lowered (DOOF DOOF) civic was clutch coasting behind him (about 2 m) then randomly accelerated into him.
My mates utes whole back bar was bent, number plate no where to be seen, spare tyre rolling down the hill and chassy bent. the civic went right under his ute n just put a dint/bend (big one but) in his bonnet just below where the water squirters are for the wipers....Lucky the insurance paid up all 3500 of it
