Check out this great link....

thats the general idea.
It really all depends on what u want from your sub.
getting the waves in phase like that takes a lot of moving things around - every boot is a different size and shape, so the waves will reflect differently. also, you'd be extremely lucky to get that to work with the full bass frequency range - note this test is only done with 60hz and at a set volume. diff frequencies oscillate at different rates obviously, so you'd possibly have a 'bump' in the volume of ur sub over a small freq range.

another point is that ur more likely to get those annoying rattles because the boot trim etc is now taking more force from the bass.

The goal of this test was to get it louder. But you start to get very messy SQ when double-loading sound waves, unless u get it absolutely perfect. The same reason that SQ setups have minimum speakers, is to avoid the waves overlapping and messing up the sound.

lots of ppl like loud bass. i dont ! i like it to sound the way the music is suposed to.
its a good explanation on how to get ur sub to sound louder tho. great article ! :D

Ok, after having done the maths, and experimenting tonight, I'm going to keep my sub at one side and facing into the boot...

This has the right faze to create a standing wave (ie - in phase) in the boot at about 90 Hz, and consequently gives a good clear 'signal' from about 80 - 100 hz and a very reasonable compromise between 60-80Hz.

Once you start getting to levels below 50Hz it doesn't matter where the sub is aimed as the wave lengths are longer than the car anyway!!!

I tried having it facing the back of teh boot but it cant give nearly the same standing wave as in the article above (you will note that he has the sub 4 feet from the back ofthe car - our boot is only about 2-3 feet anyway, before including the room the sub box takes up!)
