Give more details mate. For too wide or too high ??
Largest factory optioned wheel is 16x6.5 I thought they
were OK.
Bad luck mate. Lucky you still got the stockies dude.
Mal
The Copper said that you can only have whats on the tyre placcard. The 1" larger thing is at the discression of the officer. So if your a punk to him, he will book you, if not he will warn you etc.

Does that mean you were a punk :P

"The outside diameter of the wheel and tyre combination must be no more than 15mm over the largest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle and not more than 15mm below the smallest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vechicle"
refer to http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi09.pdf page 2 "Minor changes to wheels"
Either way, the Rims are 7.5" wide which is more then an inch so he would have got me for width as well :)
BigMal

And of course you said 7.5 didn't you. I would have said 7"but hey thats just me.
The marking are on the inside of the wheel very hard to see from the outside.
That will teach you for being a punk. Been driving my car for 6 years now no
rego label, big tyres, turbo etc etc and never had an issue.
Punk !! ..|..
Nah he didnt say anything about the width.... nor did I.

*laughs* Somehow I think you're more likely to picked up with illegal mods in a Skyline than just about any other car... Just thinking of most of them that I've seen:
Wheel Sizes
Wheel protrude from arch (ie illegal offset)
Exposed air filter element
Venting of intake gases into atmosphere (BOV)
Exhaust noise
Too Low
And so the list goes on... As Mal says - if you don't make yourself a target you won't get hit....
A.
I was just venting cos I got done for somthing as stupid as wheels. I have also been talking to insurance companies alot and they seem to want to rape as much money outta my wallet for a 10yo car so just annoyed in general at the moment.

thats true because car makers an insurance company's an alike dont want 10yo cars on the road they expect us to have fat wallets an buy a new 1 every 4 years
for a lot off poeple fkn impossible

So what wheels do you have Jynx?
17 * 7.5?
KittyKatSmack
13-10-2003, 10:17 AM
ok, so 16" wheels are the so called "legal" limit then......
I gotta ask the dumb question again.... you knew I would......
When you put the wheels on, did you know they were illegal?
And on a side note: have you tried to get quotes for a skyline?
do some of the online quotes and compare it to the 'stina.....
I would be interested to hear the difference, not having done it myself.
Wondering if prices are more/same/cheaper.......
Especially on different models of skylines, and with different mods done.
Good luck Jim!
Yes I knew they were illegal.... the size of the rim is fine as the largest factory option was 16" which means we can run 17s according to the RTA, but the width is beyond the 1" allowed limit so they are illegal. Mal ran on them for 2years i think no problems so it was just bad luck.
Problem with the skyline is its an import. Most companies wont touch it regardless of being NA or Turbo. JustCars quoted me $2500 for the astina turbo and still awaiting the quote for the skyline but i expect to be around the 3K mark.
I heard wind of a company called Famous Insurance who are insuring <25yos with GTS-Ts for around the 2.5K mark. Yet to call them up. Will post findings.
Still undecided. I might sell up and buy a skyline - always had a liking for them.

2.5K for insurance????
here i am bitching about paying $600!!!
I want to say "don't sell" but it isn't my place..... I just don't want you to leave AstinaGT... I would miss you, even with my excellent aim
Buy a Mazda 3 instead. Don't pay so much for insurance and put the extra money into a new car :D
Stay on the forums, and then I won't have to miss you!
Problem solved!!!!!!
 jk!
I am sorry you got done for your wheels.... have you considered getting legal sized wheels? Also for what you are looking at paying for insurance, what is wrong with your NA motor? Your car is real nice Jimbo, and although turbo's are nice, don't get me wrong, do you need to fork out that much money?
I am not trying to crush your dreams or anything here matey, but why are you getting the turbo motor/looking at a skyline?
Do you really want or need that expense?
If you can afford it comfortably and it's really what YOU want, then go for it, and hope you get years of enjoyment from it.
All I am saying is........
Don't be pressured into something that you don't need.....
Good Luck
Being under 25 is a bitch in respect to insurance of any sort. Even with a mainstream model, the premium is still rather high. For the Astina atm, NRMA are charging me 1500 and thats under my folks. Never claimed on the policy. Rang around for alternate quotes, similar story.
>>I am sorry you got done for your wheels.... have you considered getting legal sized wheels?
My own fault... should have watched my speed which was basically what I got pulled over for. Was an undercover black SS and I originally thought he was being a monkey as the guy tail gated me for about 2Ks but alas. The defect for the wheels has basically made me think about the future and what may happen if I go and spend a bunch of cash on a car and then have it made into a more of a hassle then enjoyment.
Its a tough call. I love the astina as a car but it does have a few negatives. I am finding that I am starting to get leg cramps on longer drives so am thinking a car with a bigger cabin is definetly on the horizon so Im thinking out all my options before laying out 10-15K on car as it will be a long term deal.
What is wrong with NA.... nothing really, I just have the neeeed for speeeeed :) I want a car which is responsive under throttle, I do a fair bit of driving long distance and find the astina just lacks that bit of punch on the motorway then your V6s. Obviously a turbo would fix that but I dont want to have the hassle of remebering to shift into 4th before planting incase I destroy the gearbox.
When looking at the whole thing on paper, the two paths seems very similar cost wise, so Im putting some serious thought into what I want in the future as well as the present. Bit of pressure coming from other directions as well to upgrade to a bigger vehicle so will see what happens.
Either way, Ill still hang out on the board and cop flack for owning somthing without a mazda badge :) Gotta keep my bitch Mik inline.

No offence but arent you reacting a little to harsh for a defect...
Just put your stockies on and go get it passed at your servo... done.. problem solved...
Getting past the defect is easy man, but im just thinking ahead. Do the turbo conversion, get booked for atmos bov, pod filter etc etc etc. Problems just get bigger. I guess this is just part of modifiying a car past acceptable limits. Im just thinking if I want to go down that path or buy a fast stock car which will be less likely to cause problems.
IM also thinking aloud... but feel free to voice your opinions.

Or you could mod it legally, and have it properly engineered and 'voila' have you cake and eat it too.
Friend (who may be joining us at Motorshow) is doing that with of all things a Turbo Volvo... fully legal, 300+hp etc...
You're just as likely to get defected in a Skyline....

i think you're more likely to get defected in a skyline! They're a lot more noticeable that astinas, really
and i have a secret shame - i want a Volvo 850R wagon on 20's
I was thinking of leaving the skyline stock with simple mods. Exhaust, intake, maybe some electronics but apart from that I wouldnt do much more. Maybe some visual enhancments ... see what happens. Nothing concrete yet.

Consider all your options and got for whatever you want the most. Live it up your still young. I'm sure pros and cons will weigh out almost the same for both cars just go for whatever want.
Cops target young drivers, fast drivers and anything loud or shiny.
you can do this  ..|.. when u munch someone in a turbo Astina

Hey,
Most cops are so obvious when they are baiting, either that or it's a w@#*er that you don't need. If someone is tailgating you then pull over, slow down and let 'em past ** you don't need that agro **. If it's a cop he will go looking for the next GTR, WRX, EVO, HSV or FTV that comes along.
One benifit of the Cosmo is that it shares a body with the 82-85 929 coupe and no-one gives it credit for its 230kw.
Stealth is good

Thats sucks!
We can get away with what ever tyre size we like over here as long as the tyres are not sticking out more than 0.5" when the wheels are straight and they are not allowed to rub.
Gutted for you all.
Cheers

Hey here's a simple solution...
Just move to Victoria. They don't hand out defects like lollies like in ACT/NSW.
OK, the SOG might shoot you for holding a water pistol, but as far as cars go, I've seen so pretty crazy mods without the fluro sticker on the windscreen.
How many guys in Vic have been canaried/defected for their wheels?
I gotta say, having been to ACT a fair bit coz of rellies living there, there's a lot of modded cars for such a small isolated population. I guess they cops are just sick of all you hoons!!! :D

maybe thats it...
considering out at the highway there used to be 300 ppl along the highway watching the drags... just like fast and furious... used to be crazy...

I got a canary once with my first car. A ground-up rebuilt HT Premier (Holden). Cops hate P-platers with V8's out where I grew up & they did me for a hole in my exhaust @ a booze bus. Doh!
One other time I was parked up the main drag & a drunk stopped to check out the car. Cops pulled in as he was still drinking & he made the comment that my ride was probably more roadworthy than their new divvy van.
AAArrrrrggghhh! (x 100!) :?
They challenged him until I said it was mine & I was being a good boy.
As soon as I slipped into a 4 cylinder down the track it was like being "undercover". 8)
Dan, the rims on the 850R are f'n fantastic!! They are 5*114.5 also... hehe.
I've always had a soft spot for a red 850R sedan!! think I saw one advertised for high 20's the other week.
if you ever buy your 850R, i'll take first dibs on the stock wheels!! hahah.
