View Full Version : Looking at buying a BHA, what should I be looking for?

hey guys,
Tashs parents have decided to pay out the existing loan for her lancer, so that she can sell it and get a more sensible car to drive & insure, and first thing that came to mind was a mazda! :p
We did a little driving last night, and tash has come to the conclusion she likes both the BA Astina hatch & BHA protege.
I did a little hunting round on carsales & there are a few nice stock BA's with pretty high k's, but what stood out was a 1994 323 protege with 144,000ks for like $4900.
Now this protege has the B6 1.6L with 5speed, blue in colour & ugly 3 spoke 14" alloys.
So im aware for when the time is right in say a month to purchase another car, what would be the main things to look out on these?
of course, within the week of buying it, it'll have a set of rims, lowered, zorst & stereo :p
Cheers
Marc

BHA Mechanicals + suspension are pretty similar to BA, so just the usual oil leaks and stuff like that.
BHAs are very cheap for what they are.

engine leaks, gearbox leaks... all the usual...just go over all the bolts on the outside of the engine & gearbox and you shouldnt have make issues after that...apart from if the seals are gone...
Rupewrecht
18-09-2008, 01:50 PM
Cam cover + dizzy seal leaks. Clicking CVs. HLA rattle on startup. Color of the cams when viewed thru the oil cap hole (brown is fine, black is signs of neglected oil changes). Worn drivers seat side bolster (tho less of an issue with the flatter BHA seats).
And buying a Mazda means buying a Ford :p Moreso a post-96 one!
I imagine you'd find a BP DOHC one for much the same price as a 1.6, too.

My point exactly, but in this case, its the airbrushing that puts the insurance premiums high, something we cant afford...
A little car with just subtle mods keeps insurance companys at bay...
And steve those are the requirements of tash, I had nothing to do with it!

We've tried every possible way to get it not included, and the only answer we get back is that as its part of the paint, they wont insure it, and if they do, its about $3000/year for a car worth only $10k, not worth it IMO.
Capital letters = yelling :p

Change of plans in cars it seems, Tashs parents would rather tash get a car around the same year model or a little younger than her current Lancer now (which is an 01 model), so with saying that I went for a bit of a drive on tuesday night and spotted a nice little Mazda 2 for $10,990!

Hopefully we'll go down to the stealership with tashs dad on saturday arvo to see if they'd do a straight swap for the lancer, seeing they also have a 00" model lancer coupe for $11K

Looks to have power pack (fast glass, mud flaps, side mouldings, coloured mirrors, and 6 disk rock box) don't know about safety pack (ABS, EBD, side n' curtain bags).
$10,990 sounds a bit high for an '04 Neo. Check the price on redbook.com.au

I find that the ABS comes on waaay to early in my Genki, so sometimes I feel the EBD pulse the brakes during long fast corners. The one time I didn't need the EBD in an extreme cornering manouvre, it thankfully didn't engage (or I exceded it's limits?)! Let's say that this particular corner sharpened abruptly at it's apex, and I had to t/o o/s to push the nose around more aggresively. To my delightful surprise, the Genki did just that. So it's handling is quite surprising, despite some minor body roll. ;)

Checked redbook, price range is $9,600-$11,400, so in the range at least. Hopefully will do and have a little chat 2moro as I think that the price could be brought down, I mean there is a couple marks and stuff on the rear bar & scrub out marks on the rims, so will see how we go...

More fuel efficient? How so? They both have the some motors (FP i would assume - 1.8L) in them!
Only downfall is that if I wanted to lower the laser, I cant jump on the eibach sale as they seem to have run out :( so it would be dreaded kings...

Well its basically go time now, car is sold, so another is needed...
I received a call from the bloke that owns the green laser, long story short, he has a company car. his wife doesnt drive a manual so its basically just sitting there... Its been on the market for nearly a year, and has done around 2000kms in the last year. All the logbooks are up to date, which included the timing belt changed at 100,000kms...
What do you guys reckon?? Going to see it on saturday morning, so will be taking pics etc...
Rupewrecht
12-05-2009, 10:34 PM
I'd be wary of a timing belt that has only done that sort of KMs in a year - mine stretched and slipped just before Dorrigo 2007 because of that. Not saying that it will, but it's something to keep in mind...

Went and had a look at the laser this morning, very nice, a couple scratches here and there, only thing I could really pick on was that the clutch needs to be adjusted as you really have to put your foot into it to engage... but other then that, very nice.
If we were to get it, mods would be:
lowering
tint
clear indicators
stereo
Having a look at the mazda at 4pm, so will update as soon as we get home...
