BA FTW!
The BA's have a nice, smooth curvy shape with some nifty little touches... and its the only range to pump out an extra 2 cylinders. :D
And i have one - so ofcorse im gonna be bias.

Since you used check boxes and not radio buttons, I took the opportunity to vote for the bg and the ba. I like the SP because I own one, and it's fun as. It's light, has all the extras, and prettymuch outclasses anything else that was available at the time (corolla, pulsar, lancer etc).
I like the ba as well, primarily because of its unique looks. Moreso the hatch than the hardtop, but it is pretty amazing what some people have done with them (ie. Rupe).
I don't like the bj, because it strikes me as being very whitegoods style. I think Mazda/Ford kinda went the wrong direction there, going away from the very unique, almost sports-car looks of the bg and ba to something very humdrum and samey. But I guess as you point out, it keeps the thieves away.

this strikes me as a poll where the car model with the most owners will win.
Does anyone have a different favourite to the one they actually own?
I was looking at buying an SP20, but when i compared it to my BA, it just didn't cut it. Even though it was newer, it felt flimzier, cheaper and it didn't strike me as a very refined body shape.
But thats just my 2 cents, again i am going to cheer on the BA because i own one.

Yeah I like the BG (SP, not SOHC) and the BA equally. It's not every day that the body of a mazda car is designed by former Porsche people. I definitely would've looked into getting a BA if I had've had an extra 2 grand when I was buying.

You sure can.
Mazda took the Lantis to Europe pre-release to have the chassis set up. Porsche whore their engineering skills to anyone who will pay.
As for the Lantis V6 it's the only KF-ZE with 130kw, the rest of the KF-ZEs have 120kw. I've only found speculation about the engine tuneing.

The Porsche influence is under the skin in the suspension and the tuning of the V6.
Further to the Porsche thing:
Lantis/323f's exterior was designed by MRE ( Mazda Design Center, Orberammergau, Germany).
The MRE chief designer at the time was the one who designed the exteriors of Porsche 924,928,and 944.
From the Lantis/323f design competition, MRE's chief designer proposed the best design to be applied for Lantis/323f(323f), and the second best for Familia NEO(323 coupe), which as a result applied to the end products.
So, styling by Porsche? Kinda :p

My favourite 323 was the 1991-93 jap spec 3 door Mazda Familia GT.(BG8S)Not sold here in Australia but the body shape was imported used as the Familia GTX and GTR. I had it as a used import when i lived in NZ
I have owned 7 Mazda's over the last 15 years.
My model was the 1.8 DOHC injected 3 door with all japanese options except heated seats. It had climate control, ABS, 2 way glass sunroof, full electrics , dual rear spoilers and was in mint condition when i got it(42000km)
I found the entire service history + reciepts and original purchase documents + japanese manuals hidden in the glovebox when i bought it.
From what i could find the jap spec model used a much more powerful engine than was used in the aus spec BG astina SP, from memory it red lined at 7250 rpm and cut out just short of 8000 rpm.
It was a very fun car to drive and on the hills no other small hatch could keep up with it (eg Corolla GT, Civic SIR, Starlet Turbo, Pulsar. Unless it was a turbo model)
They were rather rare in their time and I never saw another as well specified as mine was.
I also had a 1988 Familia GTX limited which was the rare model they only sold about 500 of so they could rally them(Bigger intercooler + turbo) But by the time I had finished with that car it was only really any good for either a full rebuild or wrecking..
And a 1987 Mazda Etude, and a Mazda Eunos 500 Type R Manual. And a 1989 Eunos Roadster(MX5) Oh and my first car was a 1982 Mazda Familia XG with air con and electric sunroof. And now i have a 2002 Astina 1.8.
So yeah you can say i like Mazda's

All good, I like to know mine will be left alone at the shopping centre
Well, when I got quotes on insurance for my BJ, the insurance asked me if it was the SP20, because it was gonna be like another 1k more expensive as they said that it was a very high-risk car to insure, because of the theft rate (which was apparently extremely high)...
this strikes me as a poll where the car model with the most owners will win.
Does anyone have a different favourite to the one they actually own?

I personally like the BA, as has been said before in terms of the influence of Porsche... It is much more rigid on the road, stock, than a stock BJ... (plus they had the V6 which is even sexier)...
Saying that, I love my BJ, and dread the day I have to say goodbye to it.

I think the BG SP is the winner
Elec everything, DOHC engine, sleek, easy for BPT transplant...
From there they just got fatter and lazier...gearboxes turn to sh!t, harder to modify and looking more like a family car, which may appeal to some, but not me...
I HATE the V6 BA, BIGGEST PIECES OF SH!T EVER...every time I work on one i want to jam my spanner in the plug hole....
BJ SP20's are ok...part from VICS and F series
Why would you care if the BA had been touched by some idiot from Porsche, hello they were beaten by MAZDA...ALMOST EVERYWHERE....they know nothing...

SP20s have an improved G series box as compared to the BG. The only way to get one better than either of those (using stock parts) is to have a hybrid G series box like I have made from a KE/BF and GD 626 gearbox (diff case) with extra reinforcing... :)
You forgot to mention the top 2 spot welds letting go on the clutch support bracket in the Astina 1.8/SP20 too. Which in turn lets water in all over the clutch pedal and your left foot.
And you also left out the gayest design feature ever of all time on the BG, those friggin plastic A pillar mould trims (heavily restricted VAF air box, overheating radiator due to lack of airflow, rusting sunroof, rippled sheet metal)...

In fact, I'd take a KF/KH NA FWD TX3 over a BG Astina any day of the week... Bah!
My favourite 323 is the BF Turbo SS Super Deluxe (BF 323 GT), but someone left it off the list... :p Unfortunately I had to settle for a crappy KE Ford Laser TX3 Turbo given the rarity and high price of a BF SS. ;) It has quite a soft sloppy chassis, but it still handles really well, and the most important thing of all is:
I like for what IT is, not for what another model car ISN'T. It's 1 of only 2 cars I've owned that made me smile every time I drove it.
Big thanks to MadMat for coming over and helping me remove the broken EGO off the Laser too!

I'd never take a Ford over a Mazda period....Dad used to build the KF/KH and he said they were nothing but trouble, rust not long after new, weak axles etc...
SP20's did have an improved gearbox but who cares, who wants to go into the trouble of fully utilizing it anyway?...its a big rarity that you actually see an SP20 with a considerable amount of torque to use the refined box in the 1st place e.g. BPT etc...
I never had any problem with overheating...EVER...heard lots of rumors about it but it never happened...all i could say about the cooling system is that the top tank cracks, but thats age...
As with the "A" pillar moulds, obviously a design flaw of the 80's, but you would crinkle and crack too if you withstood 30+ degrees of heat, all the chemicals under the sun and highway speeds...lol, mind you I just replaced mine and never had a problem.
We aint talking about fords anyway...BG is better!!!!...lol

That's awesome Molly, but ppl might respect your opinion more if you didn't have to bag (better/newer/more refined) cars to justify it......
IMO, saying how gay another car is (and giving incorrect information) doesn't make your choice of car carry more weight with other ppl......
Fact: A higher %age of BG Astinas have had heating issues than compared to BJ Astinas/Proteges with their VICS and water leaking issues......
Keep it real!

and yes i HAVE overheated because my thermofan died, not because of lack of airflow :P

The best is BG, popup lights, BP engines with large potensial, less electronics, OBD I ECU and more.
i have spent some time on the club323f site and i own a bg
and from i have seen and read is that most people drive BA's
however a lot of them have BG's as project cars, track cars and if they choose to build a showcar they are generally BG's
they are generally more unique and the BA borrows its engine anyway
also the BA was built from the BG plateform with most under the skin parts being identical if not just changed slightly this can be since with the BA dash is a nearly a straight swap
there are more modifications for the BA because mazda saw how popular the sportness of the BG was so the sold more BA's because people wanted that performance in a new car
out of the 3 tho the BG is the sportess and the most unique mainly because there arent many left because of there age same as there arent many good second hand vl commodores
more people own BA's because they are at a good price range and arent to old yet
BJ's boys get real its a station wagon and everyone knows it the astina name died with that car because people found not be sporty enough to carry the astina nameplate
if were to buy another astina tho it would be BA
but as a side note when the BG came out mazda recieve letters from the buyers telling them that found the car to be to powerfull but it also recieved high praise for the time
Rupewrecht
16-04-2010, 01:56 PM
Actually the BA is developed from the CA Eunos 500 Platform, but yes, there are some similarities
I would choose a BG only cause I have owned 2 SOHCs and now I own a SP DOHC, I have driven BJs and BAs they're amazing cars but I love my BG it has a different feel in the cabin
