All in all, not too bad.

Still like the UK one better. They seemed to be trying too hard to be "Aussie".
Rupewrecht
30-09-2008, 11:13 AM
For a first effort, i thought it was decent. It can only get better, though Pizzati and Cox did grate a little.
You can't expect them to be as good as the TGUK episodes - they've had 8+ years go get it right.

I have only watched limited episodes of the British series, so i didn't have any preconcieved ideas about what it should be like. I think it was alright, I think it will only get better. Would like to see some of the exotic stuff getting fanged around a bit though, instead of jsut looking at the lambo from the outside

was ok
yes host seemed too try hard
still will watch next week
ryan
Overall they tried way too hard. They need to relax. They're not actors, they should try and be themselves more. The young bloke was the worst perpetrator. The other bloke (james may equivalent) dressed like a used car salesman.
They made it too over the top. Too loud, too in your face. They need to tone it down, maintain the humour but none of this overtly aussie stuff. I'm wondering if they're airing this in the UK, because it's that over the top aussie personality (that i can't stand) that internationals want to watch. No more of these "dry as a dead dingoes donger" esque metaphors. It's just plain stupid.
The greatest moment was that forester struggling on the ice. Made me laugh.
I'd love to have a crack at hosting that show, but a guess we all reckon we could do a better job.
bourbon
30-09-2008, 04:08 PM
i no id do a **** job...i think being a TV host would be quiet a hard job, and some of you guys no how out there i am :p hahaha...
ill watch it next week and see what its like...i was hoping they were gonna be testing more of just the aussie cars we get over here...not all the exotic stuff...but i guess the exotic stuff keeps us drooling :p
Cosmo Dude
30-09-2008, 06:51 PM
I guess the'll take a while to get to know each other. My big worry is that to maintain ratings the show will become a Falcon vs Commodore fest and that could get boring very quickly.

It was ok but give me the UK series anyday... their accents really grated on me as I think they put them on too much but that's probably just me!

I was so expecting a holden or ford to going around the fast lap with the stig, but what do they find a stretched hummer. No Aussie cars at all, next week might be a bit different though.
shaikaka
02-10-2008, 10:51 AM
Promo for next week is holden v ford, at least that's what they said at the end of ep01.
I think starting with a 'Top-gear challange' was a bad idea. Let me know the presenters before i laugh at them.
My top cringe moment was the dialog about what to call the stig. I swaer that was what the team of writers said in a meeting with the uk boys b4 Clarkson said 'just leave it as the stig' and the boys had to say it word for work.
All in all a bit too fake but i'm a fan. It had better last a few years so it gets good. And don't forget the uk boys started off without May....

The RHD GT is old news.
How can you compare a turbo 6 to a nato V8?
The Tata news was old.
The Veyron was a 2 year old picture.
The mining test was fun to watch. Enjoyed the dirt side ways action in the hole.
Smart car herse was assuming. I wonder how hard it was to get the stickaflex off the roof?
I still wanna punch Charlie Cox.
They need to start reporting about current automotive stuff. Not 2 year old info that we all have seen. Making the show very boring. Especially the 1st 30 mins.
Better than last week, but only just.

only seen the first one. As above, tried too hard. And... while im sure that clarckson and co are scripted the interesting stuff is when it goes off cilter and may, hammond and clarckson just chat. That's when it gets worth watching, and unfortunately, didn't get any of that here.
Putonyourshoes
07-10-2008, 12:29 PM
i agree nate. they stick to their script too much. they need a comedian me thinks
bourbon
07-10-2008, 04:12 PM
i liked it...i didnt see the first one...i mean they are a bit lame...but because it is scripted its gonna be hard for them to change what needs to be said...they obvisouly do have word for word writen down for them and they practise it for a week straight :p haha what they need to do is be given few key words and not make a script and go free flowing way...whom cares if theres more bloopers and so on but it will be more natural and more like the UK version that we have all known to grow and love...

Yeah, much better - they're a lot more comfortable now and it shows. Pizzati as a reviewer i quite enjoyed. And i recognised the Dandenongs in the X6 feature - i was surprised they were down in Melbourne.
The big plus for me was that i didn't want to punch Charlie Cox in the face at the end of the episode!

That door on the camry was a setup, but still entertaining!
I've merged the two threads together and stickified it as we don't need multiples of the same every week.. So please keep your discussion on TG:A to this thread.

LOL i realise that but do you realise that there is no visibility for at least 1 - 2 meters behind the car with mirrors at certain regions, as the light doesnt bend (on this scale anyway) and the mirrors are only so far away from the door... do u know what i mean?
with a camera you cover this region ;) if i designed a car i wouldnt use mirrors.. they are ugly anyway. id havetiny cameras in the door pillars or in the doors them selfs with a image being projected either on to the windsheild, kinda like a HUD, or a small screen on either side of the instrument cluster :p

This year I can see more of their focus shifting onto the Holden product. Shame, I know that Clarkson is a staunch advocate of British built cars however the Australian experience is brand focused not nationalistic.

Well having a past conected with SBS here in Sydney. Let me note a few things.
fisrt off I personally don't like it and think it's a bit hard for a nation of 20million to really have any chance of producing a show tha'ts reviewed based on million dollar cars.
EG don't expect Zonda's to be test driven only 1 of them registered in NSW and 2 Keiongseggs things as well.
Compared to approx 10 Veyrons in the UK alone.
The other thing is I know with SBS. They like to cover there arse.
So they don't really want hosts who are to how should I put this WRONG. They have put alot of background work and are under guidlines set by the network.
I worked on 2 episodes of the 1st season of fat pizza. I was only an extra. No you can't see my face directly and I didn't get paid.
This program amazingly has brought in the most money for SBS in quite sometime. It will proberly be on for bit longer and maybe alot longer.
I personally have no problem with local car reviews.
be it Holden or Ford. Even toyota.
Alot of people dont' like Warren and that's understandable. He's Proberly TOO NICE. if you know his cartoons in the Sydney papers and even articles, it's NO westy or bogan.
Most people have been brought up via the internet and SBS with the UK version.
With a host who - is Plainly a opinionated Jurnolist. Yes some of us know he started way back but after original top gear of the 80's and during his time when he worked his voice around the networks and BBC, he was not always liked. But he always kept his opinion and used with a sense of humour is the Clarkson you all know.
The problem here in Australia is. You go and get a Australian equivlant?
Can you name one ? THe closest person I can think of is one man. SAM NEWMAN. - yes he's into cars and his beloved AFL ( I don't know what team)
but look hat he did for in SA just over crowds for Port.
but he's always in convroversy for his opinion but Nine stick by him.
Here in NSW where SBS is in effect it's head. You can't have that unless you are on a network and pull in BIG BIG BIG audiance. In effect, you need to be So popular and everyone agrees with you that even if they found out, you once had a threesome with a transvestite and a horse, they still wanted to listen to you because you could see the funny side and Cope the crap and still go on, being a ARSE.
SBS have hired in effect the safest people. It was part of the criteria. Good driving record because they knew if it takes off, they will be under the spotlight hard. In effect they already are in some papers. Questiosn were asked over will it cause more young people to hoon.
But if you have FOXtel you got blood sweat and gears into seaons 2 and it's actually worse but still rates ?
James Morrison has been around for so long. Ohnestly I'm surprised he's still alive. I remember him like well he did quess spots in HEY DAD. For those young ones back in the day when we had a decent television industry - Australia had Sitcoms of it's own. Clean nice, and Funny.
Warren maybe good in paper but he's too much Mature jurnolist. A bit like fits the Uper class Uni versity Union rugby supporters then the Collingwood - AFL - and Rugby league - Bulldog Working class supporters.
IMO best way would be to hire, a WOG. Yes a WOG can fix it. Or a Aussie grown up Wog style. With stlye - bad recoord and has fixed up GTHO's Monaro's and GEMINI's what ever.
Then have them fight on TV.
Piss off STEVE as much as he can drive nad he's the the stig. You need normaly guys. Not guys who actually drive.
It's the whole things like Clarkson don't like Vauxhul so I don't drive or own a Monaro etc. But it's great fun.
You get, That guy tell you bro being a tight arse Corrolla is the best car it won't break down but I won't be seen dead in it I'll buy the Mazda because it's got stlye or I buy the VW because I want to be wank.
Thats what you need.
Here in Aus people want shows like Torque back.
As much as silly ideas like people Famly cars that can actually take a hairpin at 50km/h above the sign posted limit it's just want people want to here. They may know it's a silly idea but what owrkso n TV versus what makes sense is totally different.
Ps you can tell SBS ot hire me and watch the ratins go through the roof untill the Telyoucrap paper finds out I had a gangbang in kings cross 9 years ago.

Well, the whole Ben Collins being the Stig thing has come up again in the media. And I think by BBC trying to sue him, they themselves will be revealing who the Stig is. Kind of silly really, as that would annul their lawsuit against him instantly, as it would be them [the BBC] that reveal who the Stig is... :p
I used the search, you farkers! :)

23-08-2010, 11:55 AM
see search works :p yeah they are suing him cause he wanted to write a biography...and cause of his contract he isnt aloud to tell anyone he is the stig...only him being outed cause his company Colins Motorsports doesnt "STUNT DRIVING" for the BBC show topgear...so people have put 1 & 2 together to get Collins is THE STIG :p...who cares really...i dont care whos driving it...i dont care if its the stig...i dont care if he is still called the stig but we know his name... ive never really understood the whole secracy of who it is...its a bit of a publicity thing i think myself...
chicaboo
23-08-2010, 12:01 PM
The BBC care!
But his intention is not something he can be sued for, only action. And the action of revealing his identity will ultimately come from the BBC by pre-emptively trying to prevent him from revealing his identity. Circular logic at it's best!
And the search wasn't that great, as I was looking for the thread I started last year called "Ben Collins is the Stig!", and I couldn't find it with the search, so this had to do... :( And I CBF'd going to my profile and looking for threads I have started! :p

Personally I don't believe that The Stig is one person. He is more of a concept that any race driver who fits the overalls and helmet can be The Stig.
It would also add some plausible deniability to their identity as no one can be in two places at the same time.
chicaboo
24-08-2010, 11:13 AM
Granted there may be additional Stigs for public appearances and international events, but surely there is one main Stig used for the shows local test track? Otherwise the lap time tests would have no relevance if driven by different drivers.

I agree with Rod on this one, The Stig is an mask/image. Wear the suit and helmet, and you become him.

So Last night we saw the airing of the TG UK vs AUS Ashes, and although cheating was happening left right and centre, I didnt mind it!
The new hosts Shane Jacobson (aka Kenny the LOO man) & Ewen Page (Editor in Chief for TGA magazine) are a lot more suited then the other 2 douchebags, so hopefully they can pull it off!
Look forward to watching next weeks episode :D

i thought it was good! didnt like shane warne, hes a tosser (pun intended), and the car was...yuck!. i liked how they chose a ute for the test car. more interesting to watch people spin that!
also liked the trip although the strapping boats on is pretty old, would have liked to see trailers more... make your own trailer haha... overall pretty good, the guys wernt trying so hard which made it better.

I fully agree about taking the piss. I enjoyed the episode and it seems top gear australia is just getting better every season. Hopefully by the end of this one they will have it down good. :D

I thought it was good, surprised warney wasnt texting while out on the track though :p
Ryan they'll be 4wd'ing with caravans in an episode coming soon, cant wait to see that sh1t :D
they wont be as good as the original TG, but its good to see presenters that actually arent acting to be clarkson, hammond & may...

yeah, i can see your point, Brisbane_boy... but at the same time, isnt that kinda what people wanna see? if they just went and drove cars quickly around a track, nobody would watch it - they'd watch V8 supercars, etc. if they want that stuff... People want to see the little road trips/adventures that are kinda like the TGUK stuff... I wanted to see them get the whole 'you have a budget of $x, go out and buy a car to do this thingie', but they dont do that... instead they trash these immaculate looking cars that would be worth a bit...

Top Gear US starts mid November as well. Now that one will have a big ? looming over it as the australia version took 3 seasons to get it to a presentable state.

Presentable?!?
I cringe whenever Shane speaks as I believe this incarnation is intended to show the poms that Australia is a country full of redneck bogans. Well done channel 9 for stuffing up something that could have been worth while.
IMO it's going to decend into a Ford Vs. Holden w@nk fest catering to the lowest common denominator.

Theres already a show for that, its called Grunt Files on Briz31 :p
I watched about 30mins of Tuesday's episode, and yes Shane's "acting" was too much to handle, especially the segment where they had Clarke doing the celebrity challenge...
Just remember this was the 2nd episode from the new team, hopefully they'll have their own style/format down pat by the finish, whereas the TG UK clan have been around for now 12 (?) seasons ;)

Also remember the earlier seasons of top gear had a different presenter as well and was sh!t compared to what it is now. Watched the 60 Minutes interview with the Top Gear UK team and found that good.

haha i think this episode was the best yet... the caravans thing was kinda funny (although in some ways predictable), and the lambo for a delivery car thing was pretty funny... and i SO wish i'd ordered pizza from that shop that night...
caravan thing was pretty good. they need to do more of that kind of stuff
perhaps hot hatch under $2500 would be great to watch
lambo was funny but i dont know why they let him put the hot oily pizza box on the seat WTF??? lol
i found the celebrity lap where he just went round really slowly just pointless and boring
as long as they dont have a falcodore on every esp and not be bogans about everything (altho thats the main demagrafic they are after) it should be really good

i thoguht it was the worst ep to date. caravans/trailers have been done to death in the UK edition, thought the cop was a nice touch though. hate shane warnes attitude and yeah...
