View Full Version : Keep the BJ or get a BA V6?

I've liked my BJ 1.8 since I bought it new 6 years ago, but I'm tired of the 4 cylinder noise. I could eventually try the turbo route again, but then I would be in constant fear of the gearbox failing. Installing a KL would be cool, but a huge project beyond me for some time yet and I don't even know if I can legally do it.

Stock for stock, I guess the V6 would go harder and sound better, but what about handling, reliability (especially being at least 4 years older) and future potential?

Any opinions on which is the better long term fun streeter project car?

what do you mean by 4 cylinder noise? cos the KF-DE isn't far off sounding like a small capacity 4 banger. they ain't the greatest engine in the world.

as for power, they both have neally the same 0-60 and 0-100 times, so you tell me what you think of that?

ages is a big difference. alot/most of BA Astinas have over 200,000km. so age of parts and reliability will be a bigger issue than a BJ. so be prepared to replace alot of parts if you are buying BA.

BJ engine bay is simple compared to the over cramped mid 90s V6 engine bays.

my head would tell you to keep the BJ or even better sell up and get something newer still

but my heart says go for the V6. Its a nice sounding engine, revs hard and is great fun. You will get great benefits out of the basic mods such as extractors, exhaust and CAI.

Reliability isn't bad. All you gotta watch out for is the distributor really. The rest is quiet good.

Mine has 230,000 + and it gets flogged... and i mean FLOGGED and i haven't had issues with it. Regular fluids and filter change as you would in any other car and it will be sweet.

I personally get the feeling that the BA's especially the early BA's were better built than the BJ's. BJ's strike as a bit cheap and nasty, especially interior wise.

But yeah - the sensible thing to do is sell up and buy something newer.

Yeah, I'll probably keep the BJ. I've think I've just been watching too many turbo'ed KL-ZEs etc on Youtube. They sound waaaayy better than I4s.

0-100 times I found were 9.7 for BJ and 8.4 for BA V6. Is that not correct? Best I've had out of mine is 8.2. There is a very tidy '98 for sale here with only 104,000km. Shame it's only a way over priced P3.

P3 = I4 engine... You mean F3 right?

Also, don't confuse a AUSDM KF-DE with a JDM KL-ZE engine also. There is a world of difference.

my v6 is closer to 9 sec 0-100 but it has really heavy wheels on it at the moment 8.4 sounds about right

8.4.. you reckon

I can launch at about 5500 with very little to no wheel spin (HD cluch FTW) with everything stock and i get around 9.5.

I don't see how 8.4 on a stock car is possible

Nah, the BA V6 is different. The BJ / Laser are whitegoods.

If you're going to change your car, probably wiser to go up, not down.

No, it's a P3 (BP engine) for $13,000!
