My Project car...

Ok, so I got my first car :) ...it does need some work, but it has some potential.
Its just a shame that I can’t drive it until I get my L’s…next year.

The Car…

1990 BG astina sp, 1.8 manual,
It has roughly 125000km’s on it and the motor is in very good condition
(never been driven over 80km’s, and mainly highway km’s + a full service history.)

Although the motor is in good condition…I can’t say the same for the body or the interior.

The body has many dents and the paint is completely faded + a rusted sunroof

The interior is basically a mold bucket,
due to the sunroof and a tarpaulin over half of the roof,
allowing the water getting in and preventing the moisture getting out.:o

The Job…

This astina needs to be completely stripped, interior and exterior.
The interior will need to be cleaned
And the whole car will need a respray.

The progress…

So far the interior has been completely stripped out, except for the dash,
But only half of the interior has been cleaned
(basically the hard stuff – seats and door linings…the plastics are easy)

Also the bonnet, nose panel, front guards and head light covers
have been sanded back and have had their first coat of body filler/undercoat,
and then they have been sanded back again ready for the second coat of undercoat/body filler.

A few Pics… keep in mind that it cost $150aus

(never been driven over 80km’s, and mainly highway km’s + a full service history.)

Err.. is this statement correct? Standard highways speeds are 110km/h.

But for $120, who's complaining!

Probably cam belt related. IE last time it was changed.

Cosmo Dude is correct, its just when the timing belt was changed

And Yes it is the standard motor... at the moment im not planning to do anything with the motor...otherwise by the time i get my P's it will be illegal.

also the statement "never been driven over 80km’s" is correct
the previous owner (who is the first owner) was one of those annoying people who do 80 in a 110 zone.

well at the moment i don't
but ill see how things go with the sunroof...it may be repairable

Your probably best getting rid of the rusted out sunroof panel and going for a perspex one....someone on here got one made up and it wasnt too badly priced!

yeah there is down side in 2nd hand cars in buying one which has not been driven to full potential

if you bought it off an old lady or some who never revved it past 3/4 or at least 3/4 of it's rev range at least say once a week.
You can end up with minor lip at the top of the engine in the cylidner. When you go and start running it harder latter in life. When you start to rev it out. The piston stretches it's only up to .5 of mm at most.

but in older cars I've seen it alot with 70's and 80's car driven by lovely old ladys some young P-plaeter gets it with in 1 motnh of reving it out this old say Corolla to it's 4500rpm redline. It starts to use oil - But neve had in it's life. Piston stretched and the rings ain't up to it.

Very rare now but I have seen it on many a car once owned by older more gentle drivers then given the treatment of driven stolen to see them start to burn oil.

Other that looks like a nice little project. Make sure you learn to look after it both in servicing and how you drive it.

Got some more work done this week end,

Front bumper completely stripped down, filled and undercoated.
Took off the drivers side front and rear doors, to be prepared for undercoat.
and took out the whole sun roof system, unfortunately the tin in the sun roof was completely rusted.
...if anyone has the tin, and they are selling it... please PM me.:D

i will post up some more pics of the progress in a few days.

How's the area around the sunroof? There's this (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Sunroof-unit-for-the-Mazda-BG-model-323-Astina-SP_W0QQitemZ150312404480QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Car_ Parts_Accessories?hash=item150312404480&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A1%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A2%7C240%3A1318) available if you need it. BG1.8sp
09-12-2008, 01:32 PM
yes, i have checked the rest of the car out, and there isn't any other rust...except for the sunroof.

I could get a new shell, but then i will have to go through the hassle of changing all of the parts over,
And it will take less time if we just cut and plate the rust, than it would to transfer the parts over.

and also it would be very hard to find a shell without any rust in it

all day last saturday was spent in the blistering heat and humidity,
but after the long days work it all paid off.

The progress,
The boot lid was taken off,
The lights were taken out,
The rear bumper was removed,
All four doors have now been removed.
All of the parts have been sorted out and organised, rather that just being in one big pile.
The rust holes in below the front wind screen have now been plated.
And small areas of rust have been grinded back, and have had rust converter put over the top.
And a few large dets and scrapes have been mostly knocked out as much as possible and filled.
and the once rusted and destroyed sun roof is almost fixed (grinded back, plated, fiber glassed and plenty of bog.)

and yesterday was spend sanding the doors back.

The estimated time of completion will definitely not be "around Christmas time", but is more likely to be within the Feburary range.

A few more pictures to add to the collection

Looking good man, when do u expect it to be back on the road??? Just staying red?

Mad Mat
02-01-2009, 11:24 AM
hey nice project. hile u have the car in its shell like state, u can do some mod to her at this stage. make things easer down the track. like jab spec tail lights, short shifter, costom peddalls (if ya like that kind of thing. not my piece of cake), stearing wheel, etc etc

good luck with her. :D

BG1.8sp
02-01-2009, 11:33 AM
thanks,
yes it is staying red, but im thinking the holden 'red hot' red, just for a change.
and the car should be expected on the road around March.
but I wont be able to drive it until May (when i get my L's)

and because I will be on my L's i pretty much can't do any mods
but i will probably put a steering wheel on, and mabey a short shifter (they won't know anyway:p )

and there isn't that much rust on this car, well nothing compared to the last project for my brother ('74 celica) the whole door sill and roof sill was completely rusted, we managed to half fill a 10 litre bucket with rust.
And we still managed to fix that.

mussing
02-01-2009, 12:29 PM
If you're gonna put a short shifter on it, you should either wait until you get your Ps, or do the test for your Ps in a different car. Any obvious mods like that will not earn favour with the rta.

just thought id give you guys a quick update,
rubbed back the drivers side doors (front and rear),
and have high-filled/undercoated them and are ready to be rubbed back and preped for paint,

also, the sun roof has been high-filled/undercoated and is ready to be rubbed back and painted.

and while im here i just thought that id fill you in on the colour scheme;

OK, the main body is going to be the Holden 'red hot',
the strips along the doors are going to also be painted in red,
the black area around the windows are staying black (semi-gloss)
the door sill is going to stay black (semi-gloss)
the rear bumper is going to be all red.
and the front bumper is going to have something that I haven't seen done before.
it is going to have the moulded strips 'redded out' (like the tipycal re-spray) and instead of painting the whole thing being red/ or just having the black at the bottom (like stock)
its going to be all red, with only the front grille area painted black.
(if you need a better explination just ask for one, it is quite hard to explain in text):o

hope you like the description,
tell me what you think.
:D

BG1.8sp
29-01-2009, 03:53 PM
just thought id update the thread,
progress lately has been slow,
all four doors are now ready to be sprayed, and the sunroof has now been repaired and fiberglassed, but i won't be needing to use the repaired one anymore, (i will just keep it as a spare, as it is no longer worth anything), after i found the tin piece, without Any dents of scrapes, and with NO rust :D and just for $50 off a wreck:eek:

and while i was there i thought that id just pick off the A-pillar strips, and they turned out to be $4 (and they weren't even broken or damaged) , with 2 door rubbers ($30)
so i am extremely happy with my good day's hunting in the wrecking yard.
:D :D

hopefully i within a month, the progress should be coming along nicely, and ready for the colour.

hey, guy's/girls.
its been a while since i have been working on the 'stina.,
due to this crappy painting weather.
but this weekend i have spent preping and painting the 'stina.
so far, we have painted the body, doors, boot lid, sunroof, bonnet, and guards.

The colour (Red Hot) is exactly what i wanted, am i am extremely happy with the results, considering that it still needs to be sanded back and buffed.

I still need to paint the front + rear bumper, the door strips and the wing, in red.
and the door sill, around the doors and the front bumper with the black.

here are the pics of the progress, please comment.

i have seen it with the red strips somewhere and tbh it doesnt look all that good...looks plastic and fake to me

after 2 weeks during my school holidays, and working almost every day on the stina,
it is finally finished,
well pretty much.
all of the paint is done, all interior cleaned, a few water pipes replaced,
and a full service.
things to do: Put The rims on
(old tires are crap, rims are pitted on the inside and parts of the out side),
put the exhaust on, i got a cannon from the wreckers
(old muffler is rusted).
and i still have to buff the head light covers.

Also, you might notice that i did end up not painting the side strips red,
because i didnt end up painting the front bar grille, below the numberplate black,
like i wanted to.

Things that i still want to do:
paint the strip around the dash board cluster in silver,
paint the center console strips in silver, and mabey the air vents.
I have seen this done once before, and really liked it.

also i will be re-painting the rocker cover, either the stock colour,
or the same red as the body.

and along the way i will be painting a few things here and there under the bonnet balck,
just to tidy things up a bit

about 900ish, give or take.

how much did just the backyard paintjob cost, how hard was it?
looking very nice, are you going to "rice it up"? custom bumpers, seats ect

BG1.8sp
29-04-2009, 07:34 PM
the paint job alone cost just over $400,
but there is ALOT of work required for a re-spray,
and the difficulty all depends on the straightness of the car, and panel design.
the BG astina is a very hard car to do a good job of,
mainly because of its low quality metal used, and the number of dents due to this.
also the body panel shape is quite difficult to sand back smooth and keep the body lines, due the the weirdly shaped pannels.
This is not the first backyard job we have done,
we have done 3 others, which meant that we knew what we were doing.

even still, my car still has some visible dents.

I would Not recommend doing a backyard job, unless you are willing to spent alot of time on it,
and you know what you are doing.

THERE IS A REASON WHY PAINTERS CHARGE $5000!!!

and no im not looking to "rice it up", i like the clean smooth likes,
and i really don't like s**t hanging off my car. lol.
one thing that i would like to do, is to lower the car, because i hate how high the rear sits,
and to put a full exhaust system on it.
and mabey eventually some nice looking rims. (i hate chrome lol)

RHINO145

fair enough, stock does look good.
im thinking of doing a practice home paintjob on a corrola im going to race at hillclimbs. after that ill try it out on my BA astina. (my dad has some painting experience and so does a friend) either way, congrats on your car, it looks fantastic :D

just to give you guys an update,
not much has been done,
but unfortunately, when i checked the stud pattern on the other set of rims,
they were 4 X 100, instead of 4 X 114, if i remember correctly.
so i am just going to re paint the old rims, and transfer the other tires over,
as they are the same size.
i will get pics of the progress of the rims as soon as possible.
also, while im there i will paint under all of the guards black

Because the other rims did not specify their stud pattern, i had to take the
stock rim off, and check manually if they fit,
and just as i put the stock wheel back on, and done up one nut finger tight,
the jack collapsed, and luckily i didnt have my fingers underneath it.:o
so now that jack is in the bin, lol

hopefully it should be registered in a couple of weeks

looks fantastic, you might need to paint the black door strips to suit the bumpers tho. Ever thought of matching the mud-guards as well?

BG1.8sp
15-05-2009, 03:30 PM
thanks mate,
yea i was going to paint the door strips but decided not to,
because i was unsure of what it would look like colour matched,
so i figured that it is easy to paint them later anyway.
at th moment, i am still undecided what to do with them.
also, regarding the mud flaps, i don't know what to do with them either,
but i wouldnt do them red, because of the black sill.
i might even just remove them.

sorry mate,
not really looking for anymore practice, i have already been involved

and re-sparying a car is a very painful job and takes agess and alot of hours to do.
and is especially hard when trying to balance everyting with the HSC comming up next year, lol :o

however, all of that time spent, and blood shed are all worth it,

just a quick question,
when i unlock the drivers door, all of the others unlock,
but when i lock the drivers door, the others don't lock.
i am pretty shure that they are supposed to lock,
but im not 100%, as we only had the doors on the car for 2 days before we took them off.
so does anyone know if they are supposed to,
or can anyone check for me?

and it doesn't have an alarm, its just all stock.

70NYD
08-06-2009, 12:24 PM
if it does unlock it should lock :p from what i gathered here the drivers door lock has a sensor or a switch that if that door locks than the other ones lock, and if it unlocks the other ones do too. so perhaps the switch is sticky or something?

The stina is going for its blue slip next Friday, so hopefully all goes well.
Before i take it down for its blue slip i will give it a good wash and a polish,
and i will take some better pics of it and post them up for you guy's

unfortunately i have just been to busy working on my brothers 180sx, dad's 300zx, and doing all of my school assignments, so i havent been able to complete any of my projects which i had planned for my car. :(

BG1.8sp
13-08-2009, 02:58 PM
the accident happened about 3, maybe 4 years ago.
we sold it as a wreck for $500.
we were going to fix it back up,
but you have No Idea how bloody hard it is to find parts for them, and even if you do find panels that are in 'good condition for the age' they are completely rusted out.
so we figured that it was better off to just sell it as a wreck. :(

its the 1.8 DOCH BP motor...
it doesn't go that bad, but i am use to riding in a modified 180sx (sr20deT), and a modified 300zx(vg30deTT), so most cars seen slow to me now.

Its not that high at the front, but the rear is.

The NSW laws use to be 16, 50 hrs, 1 year.
and it still is 12 months on red P's (90km), then 18 months on Green P's (100km)
but unfortunately for me they changed it last year to 120 hrs on L's

give me an example of something which would be faster than both,
in an everyday car, that does not cost s**t loads.
and im also comparing it to the 'normal street cars'
obviously they are not the fastest... but compared to a non turbo 1.8 4CYL,
or the average commodore or falcon (6cyl or 8) they are fast.

and they are not the most powerful i have been in,
my dads friend has a Rb26 deTT in a vl commodore...
with over 550kw at the rear wheels

project.r.racing
06-09-2009, 07:20 PM
yeah an old Z31 with turbo VG30 moves along nicely. but heavy and slow accelleration.

i'd prefer a FC3S Series 5 RX7 with and engine built for 9-10,000rpm. light and quick. never mind the apex seals shooting out the exhaust tho. :p

no sht a 3L v6 that has twin turbochargers is more powerfull than a NA 1.8L I4.. but kg for kg, cc for cc 4G63T would wipe the floor with either of those, all being stock, or all having the same amount of work put in to them.
ud b suprised how well a BPT can go as well (for a 1.8..)

been in Tasmania for the past couple of weeks,
so i haven't been able to give any updates.

so far i have fut a few thousand K's on the motor since it has been registered,
and still not a problem at all...
nothing is leaking at all, no leaks from engine, no leaks from brae master cylinder,
and no power steering leaks either...
the motor burns no oil, and starts first time... every time.
only needs about half a second to start even when cold.

my only problem now is that my parkers turn them self on,
which = flat battery. :mad:

so i will pull apart the stalk and see what i can find.
my assumption is that the connector is slightly moving down and completing the circut.
so i will probably have to put something in it to lift it up a little bit,
so it does not come into contact.

anyways, you help would be appreciated... any idea's?...
have any of you had this problem before?
i will probably pull it apart this week end to have a look.

cheers,
AzzA

BG1.8sp

problem sorted out now,
pulled the stalk apart on Saturday, then pulled out the light switch mechanism within the unit.
then basically pulled all of that out, cleaned it,
then made sure that all screws and clips were in place and all tight.
problem solved.... my lights no longer turn themselves on.

lol, funny you mention that,
because a while ago i had to pull the dash apart too...
i finally found a clock that worked. lol.
also, if you have yo replace on of the lights behind the dash,
why not change them to red or blue???
maybe even orange, green, purple, pink, Chrystal white, even yellow. lol.
what ever floats your boat.

also, got another problem... my A-pillar strip (passenger side) broke off yesterday
so i will have to fiber glass it up....again (same one that broke before).
except this time the clips broke (last time the whole top section, where the screw is broke off)
anyways, i also found out why it broke...
basically, when i had to get my new wind screen put in, the guy that done it
didn't put the top screw back in it, and therefore put too much force on the clip... and it broke.

and yea, some metal ones would be very nice, too bad no one makes them.
but its not too much of a drama... nothing that a little fiber glass can't fix.
also, i was looking at making fiberglass moulds for each A-pillar, as it would save many people lots of problems. but just haven't had the time, and am unsure of the costs to make the original mould.

have a look in my project worklog regarding the dash lights.
only the needles and counters are lit up by the lights, the gauge faces are self lighting

oh k, i just checked it out. looks fantastic.
i will probably just end up pulling my dash out and play with all of the lights and use different coulor schemes.
for example, white face with blue dials, ect.
but i will c how it goes

i used LED's flat nosed actually (as they spread the light to the sides and the light cariers were to the sides of the mounting)

still having no major issues,
despite a small flat spot.
i am getting great fuel economy (6.5-7.5L/100).
so i cannot really complain at all.
i have my Christmas holidays coming up in a week,
with an 8/9 week break, so i should be getting a few more jobs done.
i will be sure to keep you updated.

Change your O2 sensor and fix your flat spot get a universal one from repco ( Bosch ) they arent that expensive.

BG1.8sp
30-11-2009, 06:21 PM
that is already on the list of things to do while i am on my holiday break,
will probably replace the O2 in a couple of weeks.
it should only be $50 maximum, haven't had a look yet, but considering they are $94 for a NGK O2 for a 300zx TT,
and the NGK TITANIUM O2 is $115 for a 180sx (sr 20),
i am probably expecting 40 for the universal one.

might also have a look into a lazy eye kit and may also replace ALL vacuum lines while i am at it, just to be sure.

will also replace the rocker cover gasket, while i am there i will paint it.
but what are your opinions???
options;
1) colour match it (paint it the same colour as my car... 'red hot')
2) paint it charcoal (like the OEM coulor)
3) paint it black (matte or gloss)

how are you driving to get economy like that??
i get 8.5-9.5 with a very lead foot :D

Wrinkle paint red I reckon for the rocker cover! :D

well there is your answer.... the lead foot!!
i have that big L plate, so i can only do 80 on the free way, which it 2500rpm.
and i don't hammer it.

i think black or gun metal grey might look nice because there is already alot of red going on with the car at the moment. but definately wrinkle paint, its looks awesome and probably covers some of the imperfections nicely.

that's exactly what i was thinking,
i should and probably will go the gunmetal or charcoal,
just because it will break up the red a bit, i don't want too much red.
and plus, my spark plug leads are red too (Bosch), so i will still have a little bit of red under the hood.

figured it was about time for an update

the flat spots are becoming smaller and less severe the more i drive it... so it just seems to be sorting its self out. Which i kinda figured it would... the timing adjustment also helped.

There has been a few problems just within the last week or 2.
1) the left rear shock (seals) have blown ... noticed it as i made a left turn... the whole car was shuddering like bad tread shuffle.... except i wasn't going that fast.
2) The rocker cover gasket is now leaking (easy fix)
3)brake master cyl was leaking. was going to fix it this weekend.... but it decided to crap its self lastnite while driving... was an interesting experiencs
4) Shifter bushings are shot... they were always average... but they are pretty much ragged now... so need to get some new ones.

5) GOT NO POWER...... rofl...
have been driving my brothers 180 quite a bit... (while i still can.. P plate laws),
then i jump back in the asti... got no balls compared to the SR, lol. the biggest thing where is is lacking is the wall of torque from the boost :)
the 180 even feels nicer to drive tho... just seems like you are actually apart of the car ... and i know this sounds bad... but one with it,,, and seems much more direct... which i like.

good points the asti has over the 180 tho... ssooo much easier to drive through city traffic.
mainly down to the HD ceramic brass button puck clutch :p
and the astina is quicker from like 0 - 30 ;)
But the wierd thing is that i actually find the 180 easier to drive than my astina... (except through heavy traffic).. i guess its just because the car gives you alot more feedback of what it is doing and has much better feel.

also, things to come on my astina..... pretty much nothing..
my plans are now to keep it as stock and least modified as possible.
that way once i am off my P's i can go straight for the car i want.

but i do have an xplode sub and a rockford fosquake sub. don't really want anything too big.. (not into the doof doof) but just wanted a bit more bass and a better balance.
been making up a custom sub enclosure, amp rack and false floor for my brothers 2 seater 300zx. so gaining some experience from that i will probably end up making a molded enclosure for mine aswell. the BG is soo much easier than the 300 :p

Soooo... I know it's been like 14months since I even owned his old beast... But I have an update... Saw it at a wreckers in green acre area... Had the front all smashed in rear left quater panel smashed by a poll.. And looks like its been rolled. :(

What a sad day. Apparently it's being sent to get compacted tomorrow :(

Bye bye my old Tina... :(

This is the exact reason why you never sell cars... And if you do... Sell it to someone in a different state lol, coz it will get destroyed

:( Sorry to hear. This is definitely not the way these type of cars should go out, it was too good to be smashed up, but I guess sh!t happens.

The car was mint though, makes me want a BG ;)

yeah sh!t happens... but still sucks.

in the end it was a cheap car, and i always expected it to end up like that... but I just wish I didn't have to see it lol

and it wasnt exactly Mint... being old (and undriven for ages) it had its problems.... this thread is riddled with them :p

I meant after you painted it ;) Of course it would have its fair share of problems, but it looked awesome after it was repainted :D

Doh :(

I've always said to myself that i'd get my Astina compacted into a cube if i ever wrote it off beyond repair. Would make a great (500kg!) coffee table
