Hey there,

After finally doing a couple of track days in my Mazda 3, i've been contemplating building up a familia GTX into a track hack. Just something as a weekend fun car. My poor mazda 3 is getting trashed with increasing regularity, so i think its time to take the plunge into dual car ownership, and give her a break. Once i get confident i'd like to look at doing a few hill climbs and tarmac sprints – That sorta thing.

Anything i need to be aware of when looking around for these? They're pretty long in the tooth now. The main archillies seems to be the gearbox. What else should i be paying careful attention too? In so far as buying one as a "do up", is it recommended? Or is it just so much easier to start with a solid (and considerably more expensive) example.

So we'll go now to the phones.
Your thoughts please callers?

If for track use, I'd be looking at a RWD car, not a AWD car. That way you could even do drifting if you fancy.

Buy an MX5, stronger gearbox and massive amount of new and used performance parts available for them.

GTX/GTR stuff is rare and all/mostly 2nd hand stuff nowadays.

Funny enough, in NZ all the MX5s i've looked at have been more expensive than the GTXs. MX5 would be sensable, but i've always wanted a GTX, ever since getting my Familia, many, many moons ago.

Question is… Can you make the MX5 look non girly…

The wheels are called barrel, and they are still available new from Japan @ $1200. 15x7 and 15x8 +20mm
Tail lights cost $200AUD.
Wing you can get from anywhere for under $300AUD.
Plus all other go fast bits...

If you want a Familia so badly, why don't you get a Familia GT FWD instead of a GTX AWD? It would mean you have to buy a BF instead of a BG though, but I like the BF looks better myself. ;)

nothing wrong with either choice. being in new zealand i would think getting Familia parts would be easy, plus it's where the driveline conversion kit to fit a Celica GT4 gearbox is made too.
