are your disks/wheels on properly if there nuts arent secure u might have a little movement causing the disks to grab thus abs activating maybe??

make sure the brake dust covers arent making contact with the rotor, to be sure, bend them back a little with a flat head screwdriver and then go for a drive...

If you do that then the car becomes a defect if the car is involved in a serious accident the insurance company will no doubt refuse to pay. You could have a faulty sensor thats activating the abs under light loads

Tell that to the Insurance company they will always find a loop hole

dude if your not mechanically minded or stumped i wouldnt screw around with it due to the fact of it being a safety issue if your brakes are not fuctioning normally bite the bullet after you had a look at them and take it to somebody who does brakes... last thing you want is brakes failing on a public road ;)

ABS is very simple PLC system has been for over 80 years

YES 80 years. ABS was fisrt invented for ???? Early Diesel Trains. In fact in Australia where we had our fist A/C train in 1929 they were working on a hyrolic, pnumatic ABS system.
but enough of that.

since the 80's Electronic ABS has been a simple system even mazda's first issue ABS on the 929 and 626 was so good it had it's own diagnotsitc system and you can read the codes.

Now if your ABS light is not flashing you do not have PROBLEM

what you have is a problem with an imput.
Yes possible a wheel is at fault. but unlikely.

It's more like your electromagnetic ABS sensor is sensing an issue.

Simple to take your wheel off
Take a can of - Brake CLEANER - I liek the WURTH brand (normal stuff they sell at repco is fine and cheaper)
spray it all around into the area of the ABS sensor ring this is a segmented ring either attched to the CV or to hub depending on model ( so long since I've seen into a BJ)

Any large build up or metalic substance will cause this problem. If oyu run metal type pads this can occur, it's a big problem on production cars in racing if they run hard pads on stock discs- the former GTP mitsubishi guys had it as they ran a super hard pad that eat into the rotors.

Also once done - check the ABS ring is not loose. On models with it attched to CV's this can occur as they are constantly pushed off and pushed on during refurbishment.
Once they do become loose it's hard ot get them back on . I use industrial grade Loctite retaining compund and it still came off if I did a huge burnout etc.

The only other issue would be your sensor or wiring but normally this would send out a fault into the ECU and oyur ABS light when you start will either stay lit up or even flash depending on model.

Thanks for the help guys.

The problem is it sounds more like a grinding and i can feel the vibration through the brake pedal so i was thinking it was the abs cause of that feeling.

But like i said before the car is off the road at the moment. I think i will take it to a brake specialist and get it looked at.

Again thanks for the advise as always.

Cheers Matt

You got brake pads ?

grinding - wheel bearing or quite common

wheel not on tight enough to hold rotor against the hub because the screw or screws holdign the rotor in place onto the hub has been removed and not replaced
