MazdaSpeed Protege Turbo Callaway Grand Am SCCA NASA
Vehicle Description
2003 Grand Am Cup MazdaSpeed Turbo Protégé
This is a MazdaSpeed “body in white built by Fountain Motorsports to compete in the Grand Am Cup series in 2005. This is a very well built and safe race car. The cage is very well designed and built. This is the full race motor used by Fountain and designed by Callaway. I do not have all of the specific details, on the internals, but through some research I have been told by the owner of the sister car, that a lot of time and money was spent in its development. It has a full MOTEC ECU, ADL and harness. This alone shows you that not much was spared on this project. I was told that nearly $100,000 was spent and it shows http://dnoblett.homedns.org/fountain_motorsports/Racing/05_Mazda_Photos.htm . All of the wiring is very neat and well done. I did dyno the car at 201 whp and 210 ft/lbs of torque at only 10psi. I am told that the motor is good for 15 to 16psi which would produce 250+ whp. The boost is cockpit adjustable. Brakes are very balanced and hold up well to 45 mins of hard abuse. I apologize that I do not know more about the suspension, but the car is very neutral and needs nothing in the way of upgrades or setup. The unibody is very straight and appears to never had any damage or repairs. The body lines up very well and all of the paint is well applied.
I purchased this car about 2 years ago because I thought it was a very well done and expensive race car. My experience is with AWD Audi’s. I did not by this car as a replacement, but as a compliment to my other cars. I have to say for the money invested in initial cost and maintenance, it is a very impressive car. At only 2400lbs I was very impressed with the acceleration and braking. I’m used to more power, but at the cost of a lot more weight. Every time I get in this car, I am still impressed with how hard it pulls and how quickly it binds down.
I am selling the car only because something has to go. I currently own 10 race cars and trying to keep on top of all of them is becoming a full time job. The last time I drove the car competitively was in the NASA PTC class at VIR in the Spring of 2007. As you can see from these results, I finished in the first position out of 47 cars http://www.nasaracing.net/VIR_March_07/results/Sun_Race_Stinger_0401.html . Keep in mind this was my first time in this car, first time running competitively with FWD, no rain tires for a wet qualifying, stayed with only 10psi and I went by myself (not with my usual team). The car really is setup right. I ran consistent 2:19’s all weekend and didn’t have a single issue. Once I got used to the car, it was very easy and fun to drive. The car is exactly as raced that weekend. Remember nothing has been changed or removed (except for the decals) since Fountain Motorsports ran the car. The car is 100% ready for the track. It was gone through after I returned from VIR. I have looked at several cars that were supposed to be race ready and they were far from it. This is not the case with this car. You could have it delivered from me to a track and drive it all weekend!!!
Here’s what is included:
The car as previously stated
One full set of Hoosier R6s mounted and on the car with one race weekend (great shape)
2 other full sets of 17in RSR wheels all straight and very nice
Some used body parts
4 full tubs of mostly new parts please see pics below
If you would like to have more details on the parts feel free to give me a call 717-215-0700. I just really don’t feel like listing a full inventory. One tub has hundreds of new and used transmission parts. One has a new head light and tail light, oil filters etc. Another has accessory parts. There is a lot of stuff for support, but nothing that should really make or break a decision about purchasing, although the wheels are a big plus.
Remember also that this car would qualify for many of the MazdaSpeed contingency programs http://www.mazdamotorsports.com/ . Mazda really deserves a lot of credit for giving this much support, even too amateur racers. I spoke with them several times on the phone and they are familiar with this car and were very helpful. I really feel that this car would be a great car for the NASA Championships and if done right could end up be a very inexpensive proposition.
By the way if you have time watch this video.

It is of the full race at VIR taken by Greg Amy who finished in 3rd. You will have to wait about 7 mins into the video for me to pass him in the Mazda. Remember I did not qualify well do to the rain and lack of rain tires. It’s really a great video and it will show that I used the car for all it was worth and it took it. I would pull Matt down the straights but he would catch me under braking. After 20 years of racing this was one of the best battles that I have participated in.
