Chris, your PSU will be hitting the revlimiter soon with those 2 video cards and that overclock! Do you have to up your FSB voltage to run the bus that wide? I want to go to 500 or 533mhz bus, but I can never get a stable overclock with only adjusting the Vcore (I dunno how to tune the other voltage options). :(

What days do you work Gav?

When i get my tax back ill pop down and have a looksie for you if you want :)

As for voltage, cpu is at 1.35 and NB voltage is pumped up about 0.075 volts. From memory you have G31 chipset so you might need a little more voltage :)

@ Rix im running 10a421 :)

Just need to use a modified dsmos.kext, i use the netkas package. At the time of install there was no other method. Still isnt AFAIK for this release version.

Ill be promptly buying snow leopard when it comes out in september :) Two copies one for each machine.

I didn't work last week, and I'm only working 3 days this week. I'm supposed to be going onto a new contract soon and will be doing 5 days/week with 1 RDO every month...

Nah, my chipset is X38, so it would be similar to adjusting an X48 chipset. But I think NB or PLL voltage is where it's falling down on wider FSB?

Similiar yah.

I actually used a X38-DQ6 board up and till recently. Goes great under phase :p

In regards to your question, simply increasing the NB voltage should net you 4ghz so long as your chip doesnt cut out before that. However pretty much every chip ive seen gets 4ghz without too much worry.

As its a X38 chipset and thus uses a different manufacturing voltage you will need more voltage. Simply due to the manufacturing process. i think i used to use .1 or .125 voltages on my Q6700 :)

EDIT: You shouldnt have to touch the PLL voltage at all to get 4ghz :)

Oh and in regards to your question Rix, yes it can be installed on a AMD machine. or leoard can, i havnt seen any patched kernels around for snow leopard for AMD yet.

Just google leopard + AMD, should return some results/guides :)

My work Lappie is a 3+ year old 'LG-E' S1 Express dual and the only problem I've had is with the connection to the screen which began failing about a month ago :( Oh and it doesn't have a serial port.
Finding a replacement is gonna be a bitch, most of the HPs that have been tried have gone FUBAR after 18 months and cheap ASUS etc... don't have the body streangth. Oh and LG-E don't do lappies any more and LG-N (who would have spares) are a long way away.

If you want to run DDR3, compare the price of an AMD Phenom II quad & AM3 board for the cost of the E8500 and the P5Q3. Otherwise DDR2 is fine for the E8500, unless you want to run a rediculously wide FSB speed overclocked.

Depends what you want to do with the computer. Bang for buck, the E8400-8600 with DDR2 RAM are very good for most things, including gaming. Also, the Phenom II quads are very well priced, and would cost much the same as a balanced E8600 system. Intel quads are great for CPU intensive software, but tend to be not as good for gaming unless you get something with a higher core speed, like the new i7 core chips. That's why I suggested to look at Phenom II quads as they are roughly the same price range as what you've mentioned (even with the higher bus speed). AM3 boards are really cheap too. :D

The thing you will notice most with more RAM is the HDD won't thrash as much. :) You won't see any difference with clock speed on RAM unless you are overclocking, etc...

Built by me!!!

Did my best with the whole clean wiring job....took a while to sort out the various 12V DC connections from the PSU...the i7 runs a bit hotter then I expected (as per above) but she flies now...still getting used to the huge monitor (big step from a 16")...lol

Currently got a Dell Optiplex GX280 small form factor PC with:
- P4 3.2GHz CPU
- 2x1GB DDR2 800MHz RAM
- Radeon X1300 Pro 128MB half-height GPU
- 160GB SATA + 500GB SATA external HDDs (nearly full :( )
- slimline DVDRW+/-
- Benq E2200HD 22" widescreen 16x9 LCD

It's fine for what I do, playing Urban Terror (a free game based on the Quake3 engine), CAD/CAM and it still has serial and printer ports for programming microcontrollers.

My next box wishlist (from MSY):
- C2D E6300 CPU $99
- GB G41M-ES2L Motherboard $71
- 2x2GB GSkill-NT DDR2 800MHz RAM $73
- GB Radeon HD4670 512MB GPU $88
- Pioneer DVR-218 SATA DVDRW+/- $65
- WD SATA 808GB HDD $88
- CoolerMaster Elite RC330 Case w/PSU $75

Maybe I'll treat myself around chrissy. :p

How? and what is 3D Mark score?...I have an Intel system tester but It just did heaps of things and I got impatient so I switched it off and played dawn of war...lol

Alot of people have been saying that its over kill and a waste of $$$ but since I got 100% of the parts at cost price...Its alot cheaper then if I were to buy the same system from Harvey Norman...who want almost $5k for a system just below mine...

You can do 3D Mark 06 in XP its Vantage that wont run in XP.
You can download the free trials from http://www.futuremark.com/

Zappy : I would install Windows 7 on your PC if it were mine. XP just doesn't know what to do with all the cores.
You should still be able to get your hands on a copy of the RC & key from Microsoft, if not I have downloaded the image.

But there aint any apps for 64bit yet...?...think ill wait until the full version of W7 is out and bug free...Everybody has the opinion on the whole Beta W7 and all that...Seems XP is still more stable for most unless your a crazy O/C'er and need the 64bit....otherwise I would have gotten XP 64bit...once again though, there's just not enough apps to facilitate the change...when is the 1st full version out?...Shane was goin on about he has the full version but Ive been told by reliable sources that the "FULL" version hasnt even seen the internet yet....

Does anybody have any idea what the 920 i7 temp is meant to be?...I cant find the recommended temp?...

I dunno about W7 64bit but there are heaps of apps that refuse to work on Vista 64bit...especially the entire HP range....

BUT....

If I were to stop arguing...which Im not...lol...where would I be able to download W7...Shane just told me he had it and p!$$ed off...Where could I find the so-called "almost complete" version?...

Windows 7 isn't officially released to the public untill 22 Oct but the final version is out its called RTM, im using it and its great.
To be honest the first version of 7 they released (the beta) was a better OS than XP or vista.
I have been running 7 since last year and i never want to go back.
I have even got it installed on my EEE pc.
Oh and i'm the manager of a PC store so I really can't wait as no one wants a PC ATM.
And I wouldn't have a problem with a copy of 7 downloaded off the Microsoft website. Thats what im using.

Im gonna get W7 asap...see what the fuss is about...no need to O/C though, this PC is wicked fast....handled Prime5 no probs...

Apparently the INtel chips are meant to run a tad on the hot side...no uncommon to see 60 degree temps...mines running at a solid 47 degrees when I play Quake 4 and the sought so no probs...some people are reporting temps as high as 90 degrees on an O/C system..

A few years ago every day I would see a motherboard with burst caps on them, the hotter the case temps the faster they died, now its hp laptops with dead video cards I get a dead one in everyday.
There is an asus press release talking about heat affecting product life.

My system recently got and upgrade to an Intel Core Quad Q9650 @ 3.0GHz (12MB of L2 cache =O), 4GB of 1066MHz DDR3 RAM, and an old ATI HD4850 512MB running on an ASUS P5Q. im using W7 Pro 64, but having problems with driver compatability so anyone who uses old programs i would recommend staying with the 32 bit edition for the time being.

for peripherals i use a 2005 model G15 which i love =D and an awesome Microsoft Sidewinder X8 mouse, shame about my now tiny 17" LCD, but until i finish uni and get a better job im pov; so can only either save money for cars, or spend money on my PC... i hate saving =(

while i7's are all the rage now, this thing runs everything except GTAIV on full graphics (including Crysis... until Crysis 2 comes out =/) and i love it!!

i just got a new comp last week cus my old one shat itself (well the 8800GTX512 did but i need a new procesor anyway :)

Asus P6T SE and a 960 (not oc, not going to be :p) so at 3.2Ghz
triple channel matched 6Gb of ram 1600Mhz (board has room for 3 more :D)
GTX470 1280MB
powered by a corsair TX 850
all on a 7 64bit system :)
2233BW samsung screen (will be replacing it with RX, this one is almost 2 years old now and i want 3D)
and a whole heap of crappy hard drives haha (i tend to keep **** from over the years and rather than deleting i just get new hdd :()

my old comp was amd athlon 64 X2 (6000+ yeah right more like 5600lol) with 4Gb of ram and the GTX8800 with 512mb of ram and a 600W power supply (mind you i got this just before crysis came out, the original one in jan 2008 and it ran fine up untill sunday 2 weeks ago when it went belly up and kept blu screening from what i gathered was either a total cpu failure or a gpu overheating and failure)

well 2 days ago my 3 year old laptop acer aspire 5520 G motherboard decided to have a heart attack and as a result it died. as i was quoted 900 bucks to fix it. today i picked up another acer. its a aspire 5741 G.
which came with a xbox360 arcade, 3 year warrenty, and $300 surge protector
for the tidy price of $1400
so here the specs

old laptop
AMD Turion 64 x 2 TL-60 ( 2.0 ghz, 2 x 512 cache)
NVIDIA GeForce 8400m G 128mb dedicated graphics card
2GB ram
15.4 inch lcd screen with crystal eye webcam
160 GB HDD
ACER NPLIFY 802.11 wireless
windows vista Home Premium
blue tooth
DVD super multi DL drive

new laptop
Intel Core i5 processor430 twin core (2.26GHz, 3mb L3 x 2 cache
NVIDIA GeForce GT 320M CUDA 1GB boostable to 2.747 GB with Turbocache decated graphics card
15.6 inch HD LED LCD with webcam
4 GB ram
HDMI out put
640 GB HDD
ACER NPLIFY 802.11 wireless
Windows 7 Home Premium

one downside is no bluetooth which is annoying
but is so much faster than the old one
bringing old laptop down to computer town down the road who will take the old HDD
out and put it in its old case with a USB cable so i can get all my old stuff off it
i have my BG workshop manual on there and im replacing bushes this weekend so makes it a little more difficult but oh well

Sure its an i5 and not an i3?

RustyKaos
12-06-2010, 06:48 AM
Haha. You got that from Harvey Norman with the free xbox 360. :D
That model is an i5 just the entry model which will still do its job. I have to say I am not impressed with the i7's at all and find the higher end i5 to be faster.

mkid

yeah it is a i5 its written all over it and says it in the computer settings
and it has a twin core
i3 single core
i5 twin core
i7 quad core
i use at home and uni a lot so its kind of my own home computer as well
therefore i didnt want a i3 as i have been told by my mate who is doing computer science that i3 slows down heaps when about 25% of the hdd is used up
so therefore its only good if everything is kept off it
and i7 isnt worth the extra cost as it is not fast enough for the price
as rusty sort of said above and i was fair disappointed as well at the specs a i7 pushes in a laptop
this is for laptops tho and in a desktop this could be a lot different
also i3 cannot be overclocked and i5 and i7 can
so after a few months i might turn it up a little bit dont want to damage it tho
but my mate told me to go i5 and im happy i did also these are the exact specs i wanted so im really happy with it

and your right rusty i did get it from harvey norman hahahaha
bloke was a bit of jerk however so i asked to speak to another salesman
next guy was real nice and helpfull he threw in 3 years warrenty and a surge protector
so that pretty cool and i got a free xbox360 with thanks to deals they have going on

Ahh your counting physical cores as opposed to thread processes.

Who ever told you an i3 cant be overclocked was seriously mistaken.

i3 cant in laptops but it can in i5 and i7 laptops
well that is what ive been told by domaine, computer town, harvey norman, joycemain, lappy king, rebyte computers and at uni
im not sure about tower computers
but i could be way off
but how many cores deems if it is i3 i5 or i7

Its kinda tricky thing as physically there's only two cores. But each core has two threads so logically there is four cores available to both the i5 and i7.(eight if HT is enabled for i7(i7s are still called a quad core though)) Now the issue arises in that how do you label cores?

In the past we called a dual core a dual core because it was two cores which could handle a single thread each, today we have 1 core handling multiple threads. By no way is it a standard but people have adopted counting threads as cores, whether this is because windows show 4 cores and thus is easily understood by the populace im not sure but it is generally how they are counted.

Any cpu can be overclocked in any application if you have the knowledge. Overclocking in a laptop is asking for trouble specially in Australia with standardised cooling for world over.

ok ok wait a minute now. i7 can be a dual core as well (2 physical cores) and that the i7 6 series. the i7 7 and 8 series i dont know much about but the 9 series are all 4 physical cores and with HT you have 8 logical paths (threads).. the i7 980X has 6 physical cores and has HT so u end up with 12 logical paths :) the 1600price tag is something i couldnt justify. this is all related to desktops and for laptops i have no idea

I actually got my numbers wrong, anyways. I based my post off of mkids and linux reporting 4 cores. (still had 1 core disabled from the other day).

I do not know of any i7 6 series, i do know of an i5 6 series however. i7 8 series have the same number of threads as blomfield :)

Due to a failing 3 year old motherboard and a dead video card, I got some new parts - a cheap ASRock P45XE motherboard and 2xHD6850 Powercolor video cards. With my Q9650 overclocked to 3.6Ghz at stock volts, I can run Metro 2033 at max settings at 1360x768. 1680x1050 or 1920x1080 gets jerky when maxed out... =[

I was hoping to get more performance, but I know this game is the new Crysis as far as killing your computer goes. Interestingly enough, Crysis runs like a dream on my HTPC [AMD X2 250 at 3.75Ghz with HD5770] at 1360x768 on my 32" LCD TV. Oh well, a P67 motherboard would've been nice, but it would've meant new everything...

Has anyone got a system that can play Metro 2033 maxed out?

How does it compare to crysis? i can run it maxed.
If I drop the antialiaising from 4XAA to AAA, I can run it smoothly at 1680x1050.
I don't think Metro 2033 is more visually stunning than Crysis [Warhead], but it demands better hardware for some reason...

chicaboo
26-05-2011, 06:06 PM
Well I installed FRAPS, and it says I am getting some decent frames at max settings at 1680x1080 [40-60fps]. So I'm wondering if it's just the mouse movement that is making it look jerky? Some games have a mouse smoothing option, but I don't see it in Metro 2033. I'll try lowering my mouse sensitivity in Windows and see what that does in the game...

mikey_something
26-05-2011, 06:46 PM
Is AA on?
Is motion blurring on?
Without those two even 60 fps can look **** in some games.

chicaboo
26-05-2011, 07:24 PM
Yeah, it's on MSAAx4 and 16xAF, which are the highest settings. I couldn't understand why it was jerky, as I was getting frame tearing - which means I'm exceeding the refresh rate of my monitor [60Hz]. FRAPS confirms that I'm running as high as 80-100fps at times. It could just be the dreaded micro-stuttering from crossfire, or the mouse's sensitivity being too high, affecting it's resolution?

mikey_something
27-05-2011, 08:59 AM
Umm to fix your tearing turn on wait for Vsync or Vsync on or something.
In most games this limits your fps to 60. No more tearing :)
Let me know if you have success.

Tearing isnt a big problem in some games (Bioshoxk) so you can leave vsync off and just run the game at maximum fps. But most games do require a limited fps.

chicaboo
27-05-2011, 10:29 AM
There's no vsync option in Metro 2033, and even with vsync enabled in AMD [Catalyst] Control Centre, it still won't sync to 60fps. I think crossfire buggers up the vsync, as I've noticed vsync not working in another game.

The good news is that my HTPC can play Metro 2033 reasonably well with DOF turned off at 1280x720. Since it's on the TV it doesn't need a big resolution to look good. But explosions rip the arse out of the framerate and make it slow down quite a bit. If I ease off on the settings I can make it run smoothly during explosions, but it will start to look a bit XBOXy if i do that...
