Hey Mat,

I used to sell tyres & as far as tread/compound, this V directional tyre is OK, good soft compound but, better in the dry than wet. On fwd cars though, for grip in the wet, go for tyres with deep, wide channels that pump out the water.

really. hmmmm because i'm lookin at these federal 595 or the ku31 kuhmo's

federal are a drift sponsor and their 'performance' tyres are intended for that purpose. so personally i wouldn't put them on a FWD. have a look for Toyo R1R, i run them and they are insane sticky. treadwear 140, so it's a semi-slick racing tyre really. but i've gotten over 6 months from them with about 50% tread left.

Don't know about the federals but there are plenty including myself who can vouch for the Ku31s.

prices vary depending on sizes. so comparing prices without sizes is useless.

+1 for wide channels for water removal.

also +1 for wide centre stability strip for better cornering speeds.

ku31s have both of these. i used ku31s on the skidpan day.

ryan

p.s. kumho is also a drift series sponsor.

Good point, that was $172.50 for 205/45/R16.

Option 1 have a sale on atm for Federals...I ordered 2 for the rear for Archerfield next week...

I think they also have Kumho's but im not sure...Kumho's are generally a better grip tyre in the dry but sacrifice a bit when they are wet...

The Federals last longer and are still pretty good for the price...$119 from memory for 215/45/R17's...bargain...

sorry mat for not answering sooner, look @ the Kumho ECSTA ast! bit like the KU25. I run these now & for my wheelspin warrior, they're the ants pants mate! ;) I can't afford to loose it in wet :D

as derb points out, TOYO are grouse tyres. More expensive though that's for sure!

Dunno about the 595 or KU31, but I'll say the R1R has been excellent for me, really good in the wet too(at least when new, it's been dry for a long time now). Way better than RE001 and GIII. I've done 10k on my first set, with a couple of mountain drives and 1 day at the Mako Trac(that sure chewed them up!), but alot of highway time. Looking good for 15k at current use. Definately buy again. Only negatives are wear rate(of course) and the humming noise on smooth tarmac, which I kinda like anyway.

In my opinion the Maxxis range is nowhere near as good as Kumho's...they go hard quick, have crappy tread designs (most of which the tread is too hard and the tread design too large) and they ask almost the same price...

Id go Federal or Kumho over Maxxis any day of the week....

Went I got my 17's I went looking for Maxxis MAZ's - not to be confused with the MAV's which are the everyday shoping trolley tyres.

I ended up Fulda Exelero's that were offered in place of Maxxis for a comparable price. I need two new tyres at the moment, so Im sure that I will need to try and track a pair of these down again :( Should help at the upcoming skid pan day :D

N3000 are a good street tyre, but not in the same performance bracket as Maxxis MA-Z1s, Kumho KU31s or Federal 595Rs.

ive got the ma-z4's on the front and whatever the previous owner had on the car, these are so much better. lasted about 15-20k and are just about down to their wear indicators - not sure what tyre to replace them with... also need rears as ive had the back slide out multiple times a bit!
