Playstation is releasing the PS3 in slim form ... pre-order from JB @ $494

Clickity here (http://www.jbhifi.com.au/games/new-look-120-gb-ps3-console/) - 120GB HDD standard.. Don't know if it's backwards compatible with PS2 games though, haven't read much about it..

i doubt it plays ps2, they cut that out of the first ps3 to make it cheaper (wow, that worked well :P) and aparently you cant get a bigger hard drive. thats just what ive heard but eitherway 120GB is plenty and its waaay cheaper than the old one, ill get one when ive got some cash

Based on Sony's previous console revivals, does this mean a PS4 is around the corner? Perhaps late next year?

Considering that it was maybe 10 years plus since the PS2 was released I don't think so.. Maybe in another few years.

Apparently you can still upgrade the HDD

I just read that the HDD's are different compared to the normal PS3's, with the normals taking 3.5" HDD's, and the new ones only taking 2.5" HDD's... still 120gb would be heaps for some...

They didn't jump to the slim version as quickly as that with the PS2 though! But one thing consistent with the PS-One and the PS2-Slim, was that they were superseded a couple years after their release. I was just wondering if this was heralding a mid-life crisis for the PS3. :p

My mate Brendan has a first generation PS3, and it's great for playing the PS2 games that used to heavily tax the PS2. In particular, R-Type FINAL. :D

No the "FAT PS3" also takes 2.5" drives. They're SATA drives @ 5400RPM.. I read somewhere that it's pointless getting a 7200RPM drive for the PS3..

i think gav is on to something here, ps3 isnt doing so well from what i heard, my mate was telling me that some of the companies that have been developing games for them for years have jumped ship to microsoft, i think he said square and someone else, im not to sure but he always seems to know his sht when it comes 2 playstation (hardcore supporter for many many years). its kinda sad if tis true, cus sony allways put out good consoles, apart from ps3 (360 is better apart from the bluray..) but yeah
the slimline does look good, wider tho...

PS3 is doing very badly - a majority of the game developers don't like the console and this is affecting the quality of ( and lack of ) games compared to its rivals. Many games are goming out Xbox only. Not long ago Sony was pressured by some of the large publishers to reduce the console's price else they would stop developing games for it altogether.

Although the 'slim' version is Sony's typical way of getting you to buy something thats basically the same as what they've already got.

i dont own a ps3 yet but there are a few games on there i want to buy. i dont support one or another i like them for the games, i bought a wii just for Twilight Princess and Red Steel and i bought an xbox 360 mostly for Halo 3 and a few others. so for gamers like me ps3 is just going to go down more if developers are jumping ship (dreamcast anyone?) i hope sony keep going cos they have had some great titles...plus cant let Gates have a monopoly on everything with a processor

and the community has been asking for PS2 support for sooooo long. DOn't they listen to their customers ?

I suppose they want to squeeze every $$ out of the old console sales but Im like you I want to play some of the old games too.

the thing that killed the ps3 was price, too many people bought the xbox 360 because it was nearly half the price when launched. now sonys trying to pitch on a level field, so why is a smaller console cheaper??? surely the technology would be better??

I too have heard that "gaming houses", like square, are threatening or have even jumped ship.. It is a shame because it's a great console.

Also, with E3 there seems to be a lot of stuff in the works for the playstation. They're bringing out the motion sensitive stuff to compete with the Wii, there's some great new games coming out. Wolfenstein has just gone to market and it looks good! Assassin's Creed II is out shortly and I'm looking forward to ModNation Racers [Youtube vid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMrpTbEcsuE&hd=1)] coming out in 2010. MNR is like Little Big Planet.

ModNation Racers. looks good can't wait.
to me as longe as the console does the job its fine by me. If its too ugly you can always hide it behind the tv :P

PS3-Slim to me looks a little dodgey! Don't you guys think? Just like the PS2 Slimline when it came out I suppose. Although, 120GB is massive. Would suit me perfectly. I think the original PS3 is more asthetically pleasing to the eye!! LOL :o Although I'm worried they are going to fade out the original and only have Slim like they did last time around with PS2.

The old playstation 3 has already been phased out. We haven't received any stock of the old ones for about 2 months now. Should be getter the slims delivered about 1st or 2nd of Sept. I really don't care as it is exactly the same just with a new look and a bigger hard drive (which I have already upgraded mine to 320GB anyway). The best thing about the new PS3 is the price ($499.95 Retail) which means more people jumping onto the PSN.
