Hey guys. BADMIXY (formally NaughtylilGT) here to say hello!

Will be heading to Adelaide tomorrow evening, flight @ 7pm Vic time & arrives Adelaide airport @ 8pm SA time, to pick up my new MX5. Will be heading straight to Murray Bridge (about 70 odd klicks east of Adelaide) stay over night & heading off again sparrow fart in the morning to Kingston SE (about 200 klicks south again) then, back towards Melbourne via coastal road, making na few stops along the way & be back in Vic Friday early afternoon. This'll also give ma a chance to give the MIXY a good run.

So, Naughty will be put back together starting week after next I hope then proly sold soon after. I havn't decided on fate just yet. Waiting on the hybrid Turbo to turn up from US then will know more.

lol.....I will be travelling with wifey....& I'm a good boy anyhows!

I know marcs but no, it was always the plan to just use the GTX for engine & parts transfer into the 2WD so, that only counts as 1 previous car really hehe. I won't really be building the B6T engine up now.

After researching the B6ZE, B6D engine, same same in the MX5, it turns out the head on these provide better flow & the blocks have a lightened crank & flywheel so they rev till 7200rpm & put out between 80-90kw stock!. The car I'm getting also has a cool sports twin system & headers so I think she'll go OK the way it is.

I proly will Turbo it sometime in the near future but @ moment I just want to enjoy driving it.

cannot say i heard the flow or lightened crank info before on the B6 motors.

i thought it was because of 10:1 comp ration pistons, massive valve overlap and timing settings. yeah max torque at 5,500rpm

hey project, Wikipedia @ it again maybe? No. apparently the MX5 got the lighter stuff. Who knows really. From what I've sourced, all the B6's are tuff engines with same block. I thought the MX5 had lower comp than that though. Jap Spec 9.4:1 & OS 9.1:1?

I'm still searching about the head & block difference Gav. Apparently the Miata engines got tjhe higher output than the stock B6 but need specifics so I can decide what to do with build when I go to do it?

Hey Tim, maybe the B6Ds are limited to the Capri and Laser, and our MX5s got a detuned B6ZE? Because the specs for the 1989 MX5 are pretty good on Redbook: http://redbook.com.au/used-cars/details.aspx?R=81497&__Qpb=true&Cr=0&__Ns=p_Make_String%7c0%7c%7cp_ClassificationType_S tring%7c0%7c%7cp_Family_String%7c0%7c%7cp_Year_Str ing%7c1%7c%7cp_SequenceNum_Int32%7c0&__N=2994%204294953017%204294843247%204294965403&silo=1300&seot=1&__Nne=15&trecs=2&__sid=124298A41534

i dont see a factory justifying to build a whole new range of parts just for one market.. for a different vehicle yes, but not just for a different market.. im gonna side with what gav said on this one at it being a detune, as the comp ratio seems to be the same :p

man that sounds like a plan :p i know mazdas can go forever, but im just saying be carefull.. nothing worse than being stuck in the middle of the bush haha.. (the bad kind :p)

Tony: There are subtle differences on the B6 for the RWD MX5 due to the north/south orientation of the engine. That is enough to make putting a FWD B6/T in there a total pain in the arse. That's why I suspect the B6D is used in the Capri and Laser only, whereas a detuned B6ZE is used in the MX5. I'm guessing JDM cars have a better ECU, and perhaps IM and TB [if the FSZE is anything to go by].

Cheers, Gav.

got a B6ZE (J-sepc) with some 40mm ITBs hanging off the side of it in the workshop atm. :) It is daves brother's leftovers from his NA6. I've been eyeing it off as there are many more options out there if you buy a NA6 over a NA8.

BP-DE (94-98 Astina/323F) and BP-ZE (94-97 MX5/Miata) are the same cams, head block, crank, rods and fuel system. They only different is the pistons 9.0:1 vs 9.4-9.7:1 (depending on which EU/JP/US/AU markets,) ignition timing, added knock sensor and ecu settings. The exturnal difference as Gav said are their also, ie:- different water flow routes, headers, intake manifold, cam cover and timing belt covers etc.

I wouldn't be surprized if Mazda had the variances between the B6 are the same a the BP engines

Back yeeeeah!!!!

Pros:
Extra HD clutch, perhaps button, as it acts exactly as the GT one did if you don't launch properly ;)
Incredibly tight/notchy Gear shift. Much like a 924 I drove for a while ;)
Coilovers ;)
Compression on all cylinders between 192-200. 192 is stock! ;)
Handles incredible ;)

Cons:
Respray OK but not great :(
$380 sting for new Alternator & fan belt plus a bottom bolt from country town 3hrs from Adelaide after battery died
stupid 205/55 16 tyres. Should be 205/45 profile so will sort Monday :(
Noisy exhaust tail pipes/resonators so again, try & sort Monday
Valve seals could be buggered as blows bit of blueish smoke on start up though, didn't seem to use much oil

Conclusion:
No comparison with GT stock net alone GTX for power. Seems to take forever to rev anywhere near 5500rpm, the B6T rips straight to 6500rpm before you can change gear. I'm getting used to the accelaration though I guess. If I push it hard in 1st, it revs OK from then on.

Good to be back yeah!

Hey Chris!

Doesn't blow blue smoke anymore  Just get a little oil burning smell sometimes when I get up it, that's all. Don't know what it was unless it had a sticky valve seat/seal? Motor goes hard otherwise. Just had to get used to driving without a hairdryer :p It has extractors & SS system etc, double pipe straight-through muffler so, sounds & drives like an MG hehe.

Best Gearbox/clutch set up I have ever drivin. Really tight & notchy.
The re-spray is growing on me, not too bad at all! Picking up a set of 17" wheels/tyres tonight cause it's running wrong profile @ moment. Should be cool then :)

greeeeeeat news. Since I did oil change & used 10w40, gave it a few good runs on some open country roads........no more oil burn smell & it hasn't used any oil since I did change! I reckon a sticky valve seal/seat all along. Perhaps the thinner oil pushed the muck out along with a good run? Thrilled anyway as whenever you buy a new car, you always worry in the back of your mind what services it has had/not had :(

Only gripe now is it has a very, slight flat spot in the rev range that's fairly easy to overcome with more throttle but I wish this wasn't necessary (economy wise)

Well, Nozz Performance actually make dedicated ITBs for the MX5, and a swag of other goodies for the B6/T engine.

Tim, my SR16VE makes about ~135kW at the moment, I can get this up to almost 170kW with bolt ons. ie: SR20DE/T rotating assy, SR16VE N1 TB & IM. :D
It's a little bit harder on the B6, but you can get close to that [~150kW].

look I truely think any na car will be hard-pressed competing with turbo acceleration. Kw's aside, turbos are bloody hard to beat! A turbo with 110kw's will floor a na with 110 kw's. Anyone care to argue? (who has actually owned/driven the cars?) Na's are purely fun for me. Still wouldn't mind seeing what they can really do Gav. Your beast sounds awesome ;)

project.r.racing
01-11-2009, 05:10 PM
all depends on the car. i'd prefer a 110kw na rwd than a 110kw turbo fwd.

cars like MX5s that are 51/49 weight dist will sh!te over front heavy turbo fwds.

totally agreed. My point was the acceleration of these FWD turbos are pretty awesome though. I guess your too spoilt in a turbo. The na you really have to rev it out

chicaboo
01-11-2009, 07:42 PM
Hey Tim,

When an NA is on song, after a certain point the torque a turbo delivers ceases to matter. But a light NA vs a light turbo will cut it very well. I could show you touge battle after touge battle to illustrate this. The big thing you get with NA vs turbo is the instant response [well, lack of turbo lag] in an NA car, and this means you can drive them so much harder with less power. I've got both, and they fulfil different driving aspects for me. The turbo is actually MUCH harder to drive as good in the touge due to the snail having to wind up each time you put your foot down. I've got very short intercooler piping to get around this issue though, but it means my cooling is limited, and so is my maximum power.

Gav.

NaughtyGT
01-11-2009, 07:45 PM
yeah Gav, I suppose I havn't really launched the MX5 or even hit it hard off the mark at all. I wanna keep the clutch/gearbox in good nick. Woosey I know

cause' not :) $50 a wheel. That included sandblasting chrome which even with straight alloy, is a bigger/harder prep job to do than painted steel rims. If you had steel rims, $40 a wheel.

Also got front wheels on-car balanced too as these cars are sensitive as a backward-stroked cat :D. They feel every bump/dip on road :o

Looks good, but needs less orange reflectors and more smoked:

are these legal? or @ least do they work? (indicators indicating?) I have a set of clear lenses for the 323 front bar but was reluctant to use them in case they were'nt detected?

I never had trouble with the smoked indicators on my 323.

Nah that's just an optional NA MX5 lip - expensive little buggers though.

You need a Mazdaspeed rollbar - they're powdercoated black from factory ;)
