Ok, i have read other threads to see what the largest legal size of the wheel for the 1.8L ba hardtop can be. But i couldn't find a definate answer. I have some 17" wheels to put on my car but don't want to get into trouble with them. so what is the largest i can put on? And putting the 17 inch wheels on is that going to effect my speedo? please help.

In terms of your speedo what size tyres you put on the 17's is the only factor. Perhaps someone who is more familiar with the OE rolling diameter could point to an acceptable tyre size?

a 205/40/17 tyre is 0mm different from the standard 195/65/14 (or whatever came on the car) assuming you have the 1.8l version

you should have no dramas at all with the 17" wheels. if you are really weary you might want to check your tyres load rating as the astinas are rated at 500kg per corner. most 205/40's are rated to 450kg per corner however tyre manufacturers are slowly waking upto this and making tyres with 500kg load ratings these days :)

chris,
trust me there is 0 diffrence between the two. grab a free 'tyresizer' program off the net and let it do the rolling diamater calculations for you. you have the right tyres for the astina but like i say your load rating might be wrong.

205/40/17 should have a diamater of 595.8mm
The standard 185/65/14 should be 596.1mm, not 0mm but close enough.

Rod

My 205/55/15 give me a diamater of 606.5mm and the speedo is spot on :D

so in effect what rod is saying is that his 15" wheel and tyre package is larger overall than a 17' wheel and tyre package.

what style mags have u gone for? were all keen to find out!

cheers mike

There may be little to no difference in the rolling diamater, but according to NSW RTA regulations, you can only increase your rim size by 1" from the largest factory standard without the need for additional certification. So in the eyes of the law, legally you can only run 16s without engineer certification

Interesting to note, after I was defected for the 17s, my tyre dude rekons they are actually legal according to his RTA guidelines. His recommendation was to put a higher profile tyre on my spare which would make the 17 pacakge smaller and then show the cop the spare tyre.

Either way, ill slap on some 18s when I get my eng cert to give me plenty of leeway :)

Im also keen to get a V6 tyre placard as they came optioned with 16s

The posted 15" tyre size is 195/55/15 at 595.5mm (205s were about $10 cheaper per tyre) :D

From my last few cars I have always been told by the RTA that the regulation is only for rim width, not diameter. As long as the rim width is no wider than 2.54cm (1inch) over the original rim specifications that the car was supplied with then you should be fine. the only thing that can often limit you with diameter is the insurance!

Hey,

spoke to my insurance company a few days ago and they won't cover me for the 17 inch wheels. I'm with budget insurance as this is my first car but will have to change to a better company when i can. Its a bit annoying and would really make the car look better but **** happens. My mate gave me the rims and tyres for nothing so its not that big a loss. If someone could host a picture i could show you what they look like.

Hey Chris,

Want someone to mind those wheels for ya matey?

I still have no definite answer on the actual size my wheels can go to legally...

width was never defined for me as to what my LEGAL width can be.....

I would just like to see my car with bigger wheels and see if it quiets a few of the "4WD" comments out there....

Chris

Haha nice try kitty. though i don't have anywhere to put them at the moment, they need a bit of work so it gives me a bit of time to clean them up. I have been quoted an average of $2600 a year comp for my standard astina and the 17" wheels. What is every one else paying, i'm only 17 so i have to pay more. i thought i could just put the wheels on trouble free but its begining to be alot more effort than i thought. But this is life...

And as for the 4WD comments mine is just the same, seams like ur right up in the air. and looks ****...

kitty if you want the wheels then send chris the exact monotary figure that you are prepared to relinquish in order to get them. Nothing in life is free (unless you shop at Kmart).

With a $2600 insurance bill looming im sure chris would be much more receptive if you took this 'alternative' approach

Young and cool was a great insurance company, i can put wheels on my car, exhausts ect and they quoted me $1300. Excess is 2k though unless you do a defensive driving course which brings it down to 1k. Not too bad. And sorry kitty but my friend gave them to me and it wouldn't be to good of me if i lent them to someone else. But if they were mine i wouldn't have had a problem with giving them to you for a while. as long as you didn't scratch them. So sorry bout that. :)
