just looking at tyres to replace my back ones... wanting to go for the kuhmo 31 SPT but the current tyres (aka previous owner) has on there are 215/40/r17 - now i managed to replace two with maxxis z4s tyres which have been great but want to try something different. odd size which doesnt seem like its being made by kuhmo... so what do i buy? not sure on rim width... is this an important factor?

rim width is important.

you sure the KU31s don't cmoe in 215/40R17s?

I just checked, and the KU31 does come in 215/40R17. You can even get yellow or blue smoke versions in that size.

Thats the tyre size I need too.

Care to share any more thoughts on how the Maxxis Z4's were.

Cheers.

if you are in brisbane, i wouldn't even look at anything else. for the prices that option 1 garage offer kumhos, you are just throwing money away going elsewhere.

emailed them and hopefully ill get a decent price. how much should i expect to pay for 2 fitted and balanced. do they also do wheel alignments -and are they reasonably priced. z4's were good, but now they are wearing down, i can spin them in the wet no problems, happy with the purchase, would have liked them to last more than a year but oh well... got around 22k from them and they are still legal. switching to rear will most likely last 10k more. first tyres ive bought, but miles better than the nexan/dunlop rubber they came with :S btw paid 199 from bob jane fitted/balanced.

well if for some reason you were curious about price, $118 + fitting/balancing. sound about right?? seems cheap compared to the z4's but we shall see what the grip is like. at least its a silica tyre.

was that a option1garage quote? if so, see my above post regards prices.

the z4s are silica also...

yes option 1 quote. was pleased to see that price on a silica tyre, as when first looking for a tyre the z4s seemed the best for the money.. guess i was wrong. they have ordered 2 in for me will get them on friday/sat and then will know what i think of them.

hey ryan, i'm looking at getting a full set through Option1 as well. I've asked for quotes on the KU31's, anything else you'd suggest?

KU31s at stupidly low prices - there is nothing else I can suggest.

dunno why but my impression of them isnt great. took them for a decent mountain run and every corner they would sqirm under braking and powering out of corners. mybe its my new clutch and motor since last time, but my z4s didnt do that. but they grip well, dunno about wear. if i were to do it again, id get the rubber off option1 ($118/tyre) then get bob jane to fit and align (mates own it so $55 align and $20 full balance is alot cheaper than what those guys charged (290 for 2 tyres fitted and balanced!!!)

cheap is the impression ive got from the 500ks ive done. they already look worn too - maybe they will need to be replaced often!

hmm that sound dodgey. have you modified the suspension yet?

as for wear it cant be worse than the direzzas i've just run bald. only made 11,000km. they were great for everything but wear

while we are on the subject of kumho's, anyone know what the KU25's are like?

i got 45,000km from my 1st set. that included motorsports in that 45,000km, and i still had 1mm to the wear indicator. so 2.2mm tread left.

i picked up mine from O1G also and got them fitted and aligned somewhere else. cost me $15ea fitted and $60 for an alignment.

my 2nd set of KU31s are are now 7000km old, and i can still read the kumho down the centre stability strip of 2 of the tyres. that text is 0.5mm deep. so with 5.5mm of dread to the wear indicator, i'm gonna get a hell of also of km out of them.

---

if you feel you are wearing out quickly, just watch the inside and outside wear holes.

on the side wall, spread 60 degrees apart are the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 with a triangle arrow pointing outwards to the tread. those show you where the wear holes are. each number has a hole on the inside and the outside of the tread, 1 being 1mm deep, 2 being 2mm deep and so on. you can look at these holes to judge if you have unevan wear or not. and also see how much tread you have left.

hope that helps.

ever had much experience with the KU36?

I guess the bottom line is im happy with them! just a newbie in this matter - little experience with tyres... guess im being very critical of them :P

buy them good value, will be happy to get a year out of them but 6mths would be ok if they continue to provide good grip levels.

really want to try the 36's... they were less than 180 for an 18inch tyre -because a rex owner got 2 while I was there...how do they go in the wet? doubt they'd last a while too... but would be great for a 2nd set!

ever had much experience with the KU36?yes - i have 4 in the garage i use for track.

awesome street+track tyre. and even more awesome the price O1G can offer them for.

depending on your driving and how many km you drive per year, you'd get 12-18 months from them.

my 205/50R15 have a wear rating of 180. pretty high for a R spec tyre. toyo R888s in the same size have a wear rating of 100. but are a stickier/softer compound and most peps only get 8,-12,000km from them.

I recommend............

Have had them on the 180 for about 10 months and the back ones are just about bald. Due mainly to drifting and how hard I accelerate out of corners...lol

The fronts still have about 4-4.5mm on them.

They have been the best tyre on a budget in terms of grip ever, even the EVO track boys swear by them...which says something...

are they the sort of thing id need to replace all 4 at once or could I get 2 for the front and run the 31's on the rear?

if so I'll probably try them next time!

thats what i'm thinking of doing. just remember that the rear of the car will let go before the front does if they dont stick as well. can be a lot of fun if you're expecting it, i've had a lot of fun destroying my nexens

replacing tyres per axle is fine. although with a fwd, you'd wanna run them on the front all the time. which will cause quicker wear.

while we are on the subject of kumho's, anyone know what the KU25's are like?no centre stability strip. so no good for FWD cars if driving hard.
