Yeah I would've taken it off on the first day of ownership but I've seen too many friends get hit in the rear end where a towbar would've prevented a lot of the damage.

I purchased some more audio bits today for my upcoming stereo upgrade. Already have a respectable Alpine H/U but also purchased a set of Boston Pro60LE's for the front, Pioneer GM-5400T amp to power them, Pioneer TS-A1683S speakers for the rear, 0ga cables, bulk pack of Dynamat Extreme and all bits necessary for installing 2-3 amps. I havent decided on subwoofers yet and will most likely involve 2x 12" woofers in custom boxes built into the sides of the boot with a compartment in the middle for storage. I'll be ditching the spare wheel and getting one of those self-inflating puncture repair thingys for emergency.

Will post pics when I start.......

I started the install today. Pulled the seats out so I could run the power cable down the passenger side.

http://a.imageshack.us/img651/9481/010820101003.jpg

I ran the cable though the same route as the main harness...

http://a.imageshack.us/img837/9306/010820101009.jpg

After this I installed the new rear speakers. I was expecting to find stock speakers but instead found these:

http://a.imageshack.us/img822/3290/010820101007.jpg

It's a pity the passenger side one crackles a little. Anyways in went the new:

http://a.imageshack.us/img576/4262/010820101008.jpg

I then started constructing the rear panel for mounting the amps and wiring etc.

http://a.imageshack.us/img688/5199/010820101010.jpg
http://a.imageshack.us/img688/8733/010820101011.jpg

The final thing for the day was putting the new positive terminal and 0ga fuse holder on:

http://a.imageshack.us/img713/7277/010820101012.jpg
http://a.imageshack.us/img840/8649/010820101013.jpg
http://a.imageshack.us/img203/3232/010820101014.jpg

The fuse holder is mounted there temporarily til I rig something else up.

So that was my day, next weekend will be sound deadening the front doors, installing new speakers, finishing the rear panel and mounting an amplifier.

Thanks guys, I'm trying to do this install properly the first time for once hehe

Still have to decide on which sub(s) and how many to run.... 1x or 2x 12", SQ or SPL, Sealed or Ported........

My most recent install consisted of Soundstream Reference RF.60C splits (~185rms each) and 2x Soundstream RW-12 subs (600rms each). I was very impressed with the subs running in a ported box tuned to 30Hz..... not sure if I want to go that loud again though.....

mkid

sealed is better if you want the bass to punch (how some people blow out back window)
ported is better for actually bass soundi suggest you take into account if you want to use the boot. for my mates lancers and tarago (this has 4 12" lol) we made so you can take it out easly incase of emergency or to cart stuff around
and all the wires are hiden from view for the monoblocks, amps etc

I thought these two were the other way around?

70NYD

Sealed has a sharper quicker punch better for fast beats, potted has a slightly slower response but deeper bass so it's better for anything except techno/house/elec etc.. Sometimes the waves can overlap on potted when used for fast beats giving wrong sound

Jastel
06-08-2010, 11:34 PM
Yeah that's how I remember it. Ported is probably better suited for my listening taste which is metal but sealed can sound decent too. It will most likely come down to how much boot space I want to sacrifice.

mkid

When choosing a subowofer box, the decision between sealed and ported will determine how the final install will sound. The general rule for this choice is fairly simple.

Sealed subwoofer boxes generally are much smaller than ported enclosures. If you're limited on space, it would probably be a good idea to go with a sealed enclosure. Not only is there a size difference, but there is also a difference in sound between the two enclosures. Sealed enclosures tend to produce tight, accurate bass and have a flat frequency response curve. They are also generally the enclosure of choice when looking for a SQ (Sound Quality) oriented setup.

Ported boxes can get very large and have many varying factors that will determine their size and sound output. Ported enclosures produce louder bass than sealed enclosures, and allow you to tune the box to a specific frequency to determine how the bass will sound. Higher tuning on a ported box will get louder, but at the expense of sound quality. Lower tuning will still get louder than a sealed box, and at the same time will yield fairly good sound quality.

Port area and port type also plays a role in ported enclosures. Too little port area for the subwoofer box can result in port noise, which can severely detract from the sound quality of your setup. To much port area can also have a negative impact on the sound quality. However, if your goal is to get loud and not care about sound quality, then a ported box, tuned high, with a large amount of port area is the way to go.

Personal preference and size limitations will both play a role in the decision between sealed or ported enclosures. If you have the room, and you want to get loud, go with a ported box. If you're limited on space or are looking for the best sound quality possible, it would generally be best to go with a sealed box. Either way, as long as the specifications of the subwoofer box are within the subwoofer manufacturer's recommended box specifications, you should be safe with either choice.
so have fun

70NYD
07-08-2010, 04:33 PM
in regards to space, you can MAKE a ported box that is shaped to your boot and tuned properly as per the internal volume (always add the volume of the spider, magnet and the cone to your equation of volume). this sort of ported box will be smaller in room occupied in comparison to a square, store bought sealed enclosure. a custom sealed enclosure will of course be smaller than a custom ported as the required volumetric differences are around 30-50% with the subs i have dealt with (kenwood, kicker and alpine) but i serously reccomend the sealed as ported can either a overpower the speakers, or b the amp will need to be turned down which yeilds a why the **** do you need to buy a big amp and run the sub at full capacity (or near full) if its too loud..
remember a subwoofer is only a small part of sound setup (remember its called 5.1 surround sound for a reason, the sub only produces beat and no mid/high sounds so its not as important as fast and the furious / need for speed underground made it out to be)

Well this weekend I decided to commence rebuilding the tired old engine at 203,000k's. It was guzzling more oil then fuel, missing on takeoff, started ticking when cornering and had developed a nasty grinding sound which I suspect may be the a/c compressor.

Time for a complete rebuild and new CV's.

I removed the engine this evening and all-in-all was a pretty stress-free experience except for a rounded nut on one of the engine mounts Grrrr, I tapped it off with a hammer and chisel.

Once taken apart, how do you know what positions things are supposed to go for correct timing? I remember when I did my timing belt there was a triangle made with the gears, but that was easy on and off not pulling totally apart!!!

It's all marked, I've taken photos along the way and placed everything on the bench in a specific order with clear labels.
There's a clear procedure in the overhaul manual for getting the correct timing when putting it all back together as well.

Thanks, I've only done a few engines previously many years ago.... a couple of 202 Holden engines, couple of 2lt Escort engines and a 1.2lt Renault 12 lol

Not sure of total cost, probably around $1500 for the total rebuild plus new clutch, a/c repair and new driveshafts. At least I'll know for sure whats been done to it and it really is good therapy to get out in the shed getting dirty, listening to tunes and busting knuckles without the kids or wife nagging lol

Well it started on the 3rd turn of the key and ran smooth after a timing and idle adjustment. It does however have what I believe is an air leak, when I sit it at around 2250rpm the revs die then come back constantly. I think it may be leaking around the injectors..... is it possible to remove them without removing the manifold??

Far out mate, that is amazing! As said earlier, you should be really proud of your efforts, I can only ever dream of being able to do the same!

Thanks guys, I went out tonight and it now has a whole 22k's on the engine lol

The bar is a mazdaspeed and the battery terminals are Scosche ones which I got from JBHifi.

Well I've now clocked up 1,150k's on the engine and am about to change the oil to a Penrite 10w40 Full Synthetic.
I noticed today that when the car is at running temp it has a tiny little 'miss' every now and then when at idle so I've ordered some new ignition leads and whipped the plugs out this arvo to have a look.
I thought they all looked rather good except this one from #3 cylinder which has some build-up on it. Not sure if it's the cause or result of the 'miss' or if I should be concerned about it?

#3 ignition lead may be worn a little more than the rest? Or possible injector in need of a clean? Not supplying enough fuel?

They'd be the first things I'd be checking! :P

The new leads fixed the 'miss' :)

Today I replaced the lower control arm bushes with Nolathane and put a new ball joint on the driver's side.

Yeah it tightened up the front handling noticeably. It didn't remove the knock I've been chasing though, can only assume now that it's the struts.

Cheers, the engine is going great. Just about to take it for it's 2nd long distance run.

Bugger, tempted to sell it now. I had a seizure in my sleep last week (first one ever), a grand mal which lasted 30secs but came out fine. Now the RTA says I can't drive for 6 months :(
Was going to trade-up at the end of this year and figure it might be smart to do it now with 5 months rego left on it.....

Sorry to hear about your loss of not being able to drive, happened to my father last year, had a seizure & then fainted @ work, wasnt able to drive for 6 mths as well (turned out to be vertigo)

Seems like all the older members are selling up though?!??!?

Probably wouldn't let it go..... I'm kinda attached to it :)

Anyways I just finished the final (yeah right) piece of my audio setup.... the subwoofer. I purchased this from Mike_d87, it's a Soundstream T5-12.
I built a sealed enclosure with around 1.15ft3 volume and finished with Dulux Suede effect paint.....

You know your sub is working when you get headaches, the hair on your arms stands up and you get bowel movements.......
I think I prefer a ported enclosure though this setup is perfect for such a small boot space.
