After being asked this a million times after selling our 323 Sports ed, and after getting one in late 2008, I thought it might be time to better explain it.

Skoda were to put it bluntly, a crap Czech republic company that VW took over in the early 90s and caused the locals to get so inspired that they stopped using the VW parts bin and started making their own as they considered they could do better than the Audi parts especially. This led to the last few years of them being top or near enough in most JD power surveys as well as Top Gear and a raft of other awards.

They launched here in Australia in late 2007 with the quirky Roomster and the Octavia, the Octy has had a minor facelift, the Roomster is now going here, and the Superb has been launched along with the Octy Scout and the soon to be released Superb Wagon and Yeti.

Info on all that is here http://www.skoda.com.au

I personally as you can see above got the Octavia RS hatch with a few extra goodies, it's bigger inside than the 147 Jetta and built a tad better too, bigger than the GTi Golf, but has all the same nice engine, suspension, and main guts to the car. And then throws in all the luxury bits borrowed from Audi and VW.

Its incredibly stable, sitting on suspension setup just right and 18" 40 series Michelin PE2s and not as bone jarring as the VW versions, has the punch of the 2L TFSI and is completely stealth....well apart from being bright blue!

We still have the Mazda 6, but to be honest, it sits alone in the garage a lot these days...

I highly recommend driving one, even the 1.8L TSI is a really nice engine, the diesels go hard as well. I drove a lot of cars (Mondeo/Focus XR5, MPS3, new Mazda 6, new Accord, WRX and the Ralliart Lancer). The bang for buck with this car was amazing....

What are the servicing costs like?

Speaking of rallies, the RS P (prototype) is being raced around the targa Tassie event atm. http://www.carsales.com.au/news/2010/small-passenger/skoda/octavia/team-skoda-carsales-tippietoes-at-targa-19190?intref=ed-news

Servicing follows the usual VAG rules which is 15k/1 yr whichever is sooner and they use a really high grade of oil because of that. Cost is about $300 each service so around so less than what I was paying twice a year with the 323 and the 6...(although sometimes is was more like $200, but still more x 2). I do pretty much bang on 15k/yr.

People are still wanting the Fabia RS to come over here, I think there are problems getting it here cheap enough. The SKoda we get here are more expensive compared to O/S and are close the VW equivalents, but are more highly specced. I had about 4 options for my RS, namely GPS, Sunroof, Front sensors and towbar. I got 2 out of 4.

The update has a few more options and the interior monitoring alarm is now an option and not included, and you can get full leather if you like. I prefer the std option as it stops you from sliding around as much (and was designed like that). You can also get DSG if you want.

Was glad to finally be able to wash the Skoda (and the 6) for the first times in their life at home last weekend.

The Octy has shiny wheels again, the black brake dust that builds up is incredible on them.

Anyway loving the car, very very hard to be a good boy in it.

Lots of these around but this one is hypnotising for some reason....
