Hey guys,
Since most peps actually use camera's of there cars and whatnot, so thought best to make up a thread dedicated to taking photos, hints, tips etc...
Anyways I have a couple questions:
How do I find out from a photo I have taken, the properties I have used? is it possible?
for example:
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm43/marcs_sp20/SP20%20pics/IMG_2154.jpg
Also, what settings should I use to get a clear night time photo, as using auto is just crap :p All my night pics come out grainy, abeit being in crap lighting....
Example:
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm43/marcs_sp20/SP20%20pics/IMG_2702.jpg

YAY about time this came up :p
hmm with night time photo's its hard to do.. as very new to this game and have only really been playing with my camera 4 a good year now, i've found that it has to be a good mix of iso and appeture...
u don't want to much light in, but u also don't want a small iso as it gets very hmmmm how can u put it... smudgey... u know the oppersite to sharp...
i've got heaps of photos on FB where i practice night sports photos at the wednesday night drifts here in brisbane. its good 4 practice but i have the camera set up the best now and i don't really need to change it.....
now 4 still night time shots.. u wand a good lighting. as i have found in some cases that good lighting make the photo not a goot flash.....
in the photo below its with no flash what so eva...... and on a tripod.

For low lighting you need to increase your exposure time. Long exposure times make for blurry images if you don't have a steady hand.
As for the image you posted (the first) it was **** with a 1 second exposure, 3.5 fstop at iso 200. According to windows, im not on the mac atm so don't have access to mah photo tools.
This is kind of a lot of information but my original edit got lost when Firefox crashed and cant be ****ed typing it all up again so:
http://forums.atomicmpc.com.au/index.php?showtopic=72
EDIT: Marc the problem you have with your 2nd picture is mainly the amount of light behind the object IMO.

as Kris said, exposure time = good night pics. too much high iso will make you images noisy.

Hi Guys just thought I would put my 2 bobs worth in here,
I have been a Pro Photographer for the last 27 years and will check this forum often and hope to answer as many questions or help to fix as many problems as I can.
I might start by explaining what the main camera controls are, for those that already know please bear with me.
All photos are a combination of the three controls ISO, Aperture and Shutter speed to get the CORRECT EXPOSURE.
ISO stands for international standards organisation and it indicates the (speed)/sensitivity of the (film-- sorry old terminology) digital sensor CCD and each time you double the number the camera can take the same photo in half as much light problem here is if you start going over about 400 iso you start to introduce electronic noise to the sensor its sort of like static on a radio also the higher the iso the more grainy the pictures look. (just like it used to in the good old days of Film)
Apperture is the size diameter of the hole in the lens that lets the light through onto the sensor. Here the smaller the number the bigger the hole.
Apperture is used to control the depth of field(how much of the photo is in focus)
The smaller the number the smaller the depth of field(focus) . Its how you get the soft out of focus fussy backgrounds but the subject is sharp. Using a larger number eg f22 is how you get everything in the photo from foreground to background sharp. the depth of field is 1/3rd in front of the point of focus and 2/3rds behind the point of focus
Shutter speed is the amount of time that the shutter is open during the exposure and you use this control to stop movement of the subject eg if the car is moving you need to use the faster shutter speeds to get a sharp car or it will look blurey.
if you are using a shutter speed slower than 1/60th of a second you really should use a tripod night or day this stops the camera from moving. also if you are using telephoto lenses you really cant hold it steady enough at a shutterspeed less than the focal length of the lens. eg 300mm lens 1/300th of a second shutter speed
So my tip for night time photography would be this USE A TRIPOD, set the ISO to highest setting before your camera starts to introduce the grainey noise effect about ISO 400, decide how much of the photo you want to be sharp and set the appropriate apperture f number (small number=small area of focus, large number=large area of focus)
NOW because you are using a tripod the camera isnt going to move and neither is the parked car so you can use a shutter speed that is as long as you need to get the correct exposure could be a couple of seconds, can even be a couple of minutes if that is what is needed....
Marc the problem with the dark car against the light background is the light sensor is being tricked and averaging out the total amount of light in the photo
try zooming in to the photo so the car fills the view through the eyepiece or on the LCD press the shutter down halfway and keep it half pressed(this is when it takes the light reading) then zoom out to get the picture you want then press shuutter the rest of the way to take the photo.
Look the best thing we have now is DIGITAL unlimited amount of pictures so experiment it costs you nothing but time. When I was learning we had to pay for every single photo good or bad sharp or blurry under or overexposed and we had to wait to see results.
Sorry for the long post but I hope it helps.

thanks for this fly. iv had my camera for nearly 6 months now, and i learned how to use it in the 1st few hours by taking close to 100 photoes and seeing what each setting does. i forget now where the ISO setting are, i think its set to auto and i only play with aperture and shutter speed. i love my tripod and taking photos of the night sky or anything at night with low light and very long exposure (5" plus, few times used bulb setting to get a very exposed shot of just the night sky and even caught a plane moving in it) :) one thing that buggs me is the lenses.. there should really be a shutter that covers the mirror compartment as soon as the lens is released, not even removed just released. i got a massive dust flake on my CMOS sensor and i spent over 100 geting it cleaned (i did the cleaning my self, the 100 was for pure alcohole, sensor swabs etc..) i mean its not even hard to get a secondary shutter in there, same as the shutter for the sensor but just infront og the merror.

Yeah rusty I love the night shots too. Ive got a few nice shots of my gtr taken at night just using the light from the front door of my house the headlights and the interior lights of the car during a lightning storm I was using long exposures hoping for a lightning strike during the long exposure It was really frustrating every time the shutter closed the lightning would strike big only got a few small strikes when the shutter was open. kept happening for about half an hour. oh well there is always photoshop
70NYD there used to be a setting for mirror lockup on most of my old film cameras now only found on high end pro cameras it is a pain that all of them dont have it. It used to be used when taking macro photos as the miror moving up actually shakes the camera and with little tiny subjects even tiny movement would show so you would use mirror lockup then wait 30 secs till all vibrations had stoped then use a cable release to fire the shutter.

So these are just a couple taken from sitting on the ground around 12pm, so not too glarey, but then the photo of the Torana was way too late/glarey, I had to hide the reflection of the sun behind the bonnet or hell broke loose :o
Taking action shots while already in focus is hard at times, especially with kids :p Wouldnt be a problem with DSLR's i'd assume

Hi Guys/Gals
One of the most important things I learned Is Viewpoint! most people View the world from about 5'6" and people hold the camera up to their eye while standing to take pictures. It is the photos that are taken from non standard viewpoints that attract the viewer because it gives them a view of the object that is not usually seen eg birds eye view, worms eye view, like the shot of the Torana its taken from about 2'6" or 3' it gives a different view of the car that most people dont ever see cause they dont get on their knees or "sit on the ground" to look at a car (nice shot marc) (also great shot of the Brissy river Chewyrice I would have been pretty happy to have taken that one)

Hey bourbon L series lenses are the ultimate I own a Canon 35-350 L zoom and a Canon matched 2x tele converter Gives me wide to super-tele with just 1 lens and a converter yep 35 to 700mm just no auto focus when using the converter. With Lenses Buy the most expensive piece of GLASS you can afford after all the camera is just the little black box at the end of the EYE!! Its sort of like a cheep chinese turbo Vs a real Garrett you really do get what you pay for!!

I agree, my GF has just got a Canon 5D MK II and got a L series 18-135mm lens with it, it has to be one of the best lenses I have ever seen and the quality of the pictures is amazing, also the quality of the video is unreal.
But it is 21 mega-pixel, which kinda blows my new 14.1 mega-pixel Canon Ixus 210 Touch out of the water.
I couldn't be bothered with a another new advanced point and shoot/quasi SLR as half the time I never take it with me cause of their size and it takes too long to go though all the settings to get them right.
And if I want a nice camera I can just beg the GF.

Wow. Looking good there Tony. What brand lens did you get and where from for that price? Also what do you mean by filter as my understanding is the filter just screws onto the end of the lens so you don't need a specific wide angle or macro filter, just the lens.
there amazing tony well done man

its litteraly a filter that screws at the top of the lense. the wide angle filter screws using the macro filter (otherwise you cannot focus at all) and the macro screws to the front of the lense.. its just liek a magnifying glass i guess. i got them of ebay. really decent quality 2. was gonna get lenses but they were like 400 ish and the wide angle lesne would have been a waste of money for me. i want a 18-200 so i dont have to change them all the time as i already had dust blobs on the img sensor..

Don't give me credit for that gay yum-cha wide angle lens! :p You will have fun times with those filters though!
Tip: When photographing people in bright sunlight - use the flash to eliminate shadows on their faces [and bewbz]. Increase the saturation [select 'Vivid' on Canon compacts], and reduce your ISO to 100 and shoot in 'P' mode. This will make your photos pop, and look more exciting without over-exposing.

And what is that in the sky on the left hand side 3/4 way up the frame? a red light and 2 white lights (UFO) and nobody say stars because they are not in the next frame!!
Anyway Nice shots

Don't give me credit for that gay yum-cha wide angle lens! :p You will have fun times with those filters though!
Tip: When photographing people in bright sunlight - use the flash to eliminate shadows on their faces [and bewbz]. Increase the saturation [select 'Vivid' on Canon compacts], and reduce your ISO to 100 and shoot in 'P' mode. This will make your photos pop, and look more exciting without over-exposing.
Its ok, we all know where the love is :p

well, there is an airport a couple k's down the road from where that photo was taken, so im guessing plane lights :D
Tony, were they taken on the esplenade? It reminds me when Tash & I stayed at an apartment overlooking the carpark to Bulcock Beach in October last year ;)

23-12-2010, 12:56 AM
they were taken from the landmark resort :)
the 1st photo my guess would be a airplane, and the second photo, that would most likely be a boat, since the enterance to the river/eastuary is right there
marcs_sp20
23-12-2010, 01:19 AM
so, were they taken with a tripod of lent up against something?
70NYD
23-12-2010, 10:07 AM
Nah the tripod wasnt leaning, but the part that attaches to the camera can pan(left to right), tilt(up down) and swivel (labdscape to portrait) but the problem with the last one is that it was darkso I couldn't tell if it was at perfect 90, and it doesn't have a bubble for that purpose, nor did I know at the time it actually hits a tab when it's perfect lol so the photo is askew :(

I think you chose wisely. :D I hear that the 24-70mm F2.8 L lens is the shiznit. Otherwise the 24-105/135mm are fairly good while offering a more flexible zoom range, at the expense of some quality. Bear might know more about Canon lenses?

Have you considered getting a flexible lens with good magnification [ie: can focus closer to the subject], and then whack a cheap macro filter on it to get even better macro with tele? This will save you money, lens swapping, and carrying more gear around. It also keeps you away from your subject, so it won't get disturbed, shadowed or excited into stinging you. :p

What's causing so much vignetting Marc?
I got a B+W Circular Polarizing filter for my lenses today :)
Is there anyway to get this sort of fisheye effect without buying one of the very expensive fisheye lenses? (Don't want vignetting but doesn't have to be a full 180degrees)

What's causing so much vignetting Marc?
It's not a matched WA lens, so it's more of a fisheye at 0.45X.
My cousin made a panorama from several frames, and then turned it into a 360deg fisheye in PS. :p
marcs_sp20
19-01-2011, 08:39 AM
haha, the vignetting is special :p
As Gav has said, its not a proper WA lens, but for $20 its a bit of fun ;)
Just remember, this is only a $200 camera...

On the way home after the cruise I stopped near Port Lytton as the sun was setting and snapped a few shots of my car with my GF's Canon 5D MK II, I left it on full auto as I havent read enough of the manual to work out how to use the complicated beast and it was the first time she let me borrow it.

The panorama's? They are made up of around 6 or 7 photos and then stitched together through Photoshop CS5. The new tripod I bought last week has a degree adjustment, so I just take a photo every 15 degree's ;)

Very nice marc... What's the aperture range on the powershoot?
Aperture is a modest 2.8-8.0, which I think is not bad for a bulky P&S, and when using CHDK firmware, thats bumped out to F11 :)
I havent really tried any of the other features as yet, but will do in the next couple months ;)
I bought a cheapy chinese branded hotshoe flash from ebay, was only $15 and arrived within 5 days, will throw up some photos this evening :D

Get a better camera :p Nah, i've seen some pretty decent stuff with a 1000d.
First tip, don't trust auto or you will want to throw it out. Put it at least on "P" and have your iso on about 200 for EVERYTHING! Then when your ready to go advanced, switch it on full manual!
Anyways, jake (Most of you have met him) finally replaced his pulsar with 320000kms with this thing. He was going to get a SP23 but decided he wanted to be more luxurious haha. This aint the official shoot, was just a coincident i had my camera on me.

Half press the shutter button on 'Auto' and see what it recommends for settings and go from there on the 'P' mode.
Its pretty much how I learnt to use my 600D.

Yewww marc! Flashes are good fun :D
ahaha starting of low :) not putting heaps of money into something i suck at ahha..
why 200 ? isnt that a slow shutter speed...
No, a shutter speed is called a shutter speed haha. ISO is the measurement of how sensitive a digital camera's sensor is to light. The speed or light-sensitivity of a digital camera's sensor is rated in ISO numbers the lower the number, the slower the response to light. The higher the number, the higher sensitivity to light.
But why 200? Because if you go on 1000 or so, your images will look grainy, and nobody likes grainy images :p Catch my drift? Just change your shutter speed to compensate for this. So now i'll explain them haha
Shutter speeds work in normal time. Aka, 30 is 30 secs, 1/125 is exactly what it says, its 125th of a second. So, 30 is a slow or long shutter speed and 1/125 is faster. A slow shutter speed (30 or so secs) will keep your shutter open for that long, So if your shutter is open for 30 secs during sunny days, what's gonna happen? It's going to go white because of so much light! So, keep the slow shutter speeds for the dark and keep the fast for the light. Ok, i'm ranting, i could go all day and i haven't even started on apertures.
BUT, if you have it on "P" it's still auto and it will determine what you need, but keep your settings in tact (ISO, image quality etc) whereas straight auto changes all that for you, and auto aint smart and will make some of your images poo. By all means, use auto in fairly straight forward images, but for photography, no.
You will get it over time, i only started photography about 3 years ago.

Seeing as I forgot to charge my battery for last nights photo night, I went out early this morning and shot some photos at River Heart Parklands here in Ipswich, and my buddy luke (along with Tash & his wife Sarah) jumped in the car late this even and ventured back out to the Gateway & then to William Jolly Bridge in Brisbane, spun some wool, had a good time. ;) Some of the photos from today:
