hi Guys i am new to this froum.
Just got my mazda astina 97 model 1.8 manual. I have seen a few and looks like they have common oil leak around cover gasket and on the left and the right.
I want to change timing belt, cover gaskets, seals etc, does anyone know good quality brands or should I get mazda genuine.

Also what should i change while I am changing timing belt, is there something else that goes with it.

Thank you
milan

I have to do the same thing as you. I noticed oil leak after changing oil it was empty about a month later. Need to do complete service like timing belt and look into the gasket most liekly need to do something there..Just a matter of egtting round to it, let me know when you have done yours and if you notice anything I should look for :)

Thanks and good luck
oh and parts for it I just went into the local spares shop and they gave me parts for the timing belt, they have a book they looked it up in..

I bought dizzy o ring, rocket cover gasket, water pump, timing belt and other two belts that are for a/c and or something else.
I will start changing them this week hopefully.
Lady I bought the car of didn't do service regularly so imagine what was oil like when I changed it, and spark plugs were pretty bad too.

started pulling stuff down, timing belt is off. Let me tell you my old astina( pop up lights) was a lot easier to work around.
But i will get there.
Can some please tell me where is the drain plug for coolant??

HAHAHA +1, i did that too. although i used the plug... reminds me when i did the oil first itme round then needed more capacity so used a 2ltr ice-cream container and it happened to have a hole in it... all over my shirt. brilliant. or the transmission fluid. thats the messiest/smelliest one.

you know what, just so u dont spill it everywhere.
maximum capacity of the radiator is 6L
the most i've ever gotten out of it was 4L.
so 6L tray to be safe :)

The rad plug on a BA Hatdtop is at the front on the drivers side - i'd assume the same for Hatch

ok, i have put on a new timing belt, water pump, dizzy o ring, and other stuff that goes with it.
BUT today i have noticed temp gauge going up to about 3/4 and back to 1/2 and again and again...???
is this normal?

no - it sounds like you have air in the cooling system.

did you squeeze the air out if the rad pipes when 1st filling it up?

i agree with this. related question.
on my friends radiator there are air bleed screws at the top, i haven't spotted any on ours but is there a similar thing or do you just squueze the pipes?

Nope nothing like that.

1. Take rad cap off.
2. Fill rad to top.
3. Turn on engine. (levels will now drop in rad)
4. continue to fill until level cease to drop.
5. squeese upper rad pipe. (should see bubbles pop out of rad cap hole)
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until no bubbles appear.
7. Turn off engine.
8. Put rap cap on.
9. Fill reserve to 80%.

i did that, and i did it again tonight, so il see how i go in the morning. It struggles to go above 3/4 on the gauge, which i suppose is good. But to me that indicates a partly blocked radiator/or other part of cooling system. At low revs it is ok, less flow required.

What do you think guys?

this morning same thing happen, but i think since i did the flushing yestrday it seems to take longer for the engine to warm up, and then after a while needle starts to go above the middle.:mad::(

Yep it was a thermostat, took the old one out and put it in the boiling water...never opened up. Put the new one in and test drove it, no problems.

Lucky its winter time so it never cooked.
