got my astina with gtx engine yesterday.
must say, very quick.
anyways, I noticed there's a hell of a lot more throw in changing gears, like the slots are further apart than my other astina.
my question is what sort of gearbox must I have in it?
I thought it'd be the same as the previous in my '90 sohc astina :s but this tells me something different, I highly doubt the car I previously bought already had a short throw installed.

You've probably just got worn bushes.

What sort of mechanic replaces an engine/trans and doesn't mention busted gear linkages? or should I say what sort of competent mechanic...

Get a set of these (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/GENUINE-FORD-LASER-323-FESTIVA-121-GEARSHIFT-BUSH-KIT-/170542738839?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27b523ad97).
Also, the gearbox might be a G series instead of F series, but that only changes the gear ratios and presumably wouldn't affect the throw.

would be a different throw as they are different gearboxes. but it should not be as different. i guess when the linkages were changed, the link for the g series box had old bushes comepared to the f series link.

correct me if im wrong guys, but by memory f series doesnt run a lay shaft in the early bp's? (someone please confirm or correct me here)
if thats correct then you should have a peek down the back of the engine behind the intake manifold to where the drivers side drive shaft is,and see if its a one peice shaft,or if it is a 2 peice with the middle 'lay shaft' bolted to the rear of the block.
if it has a lay shaft then it would be g series if this is so.
