Oh you got me torn now haha.

What's the price difference on bulbs from the source and eBay?? What are they called??

mynameisdaniel
11-05-2011, 06:38 PM
Any D2S sized bulb will work, just got to match the wattage, ie 35W. On eBay there's $10 pairs in any colour, or look here (http://www.theretrofitsource.com/index.php?cPath=27) they're regular prices, not sure what kind of discount they can offer on bulbs.

Personally I'm going to go with the $10 bulbs again as the amount of light you're going to get is ridiculous anyway. Always have the option to upgrade to some Philips bulbs later :)

A.E
11-05-2011, 07:19 PM
Ask what price they can do on the d2s 6000k. If it's cheap enough I'll just get it from them as itll come all together. Easier ;)

Just do a search on eBay, I can get the gatling gun shrouds I want for $45 delivered vs the $50 price before shipping that the retrofit source list, however if there isn't much impact on shipping cost I'll probably get them with the projectors to make life easier.

Bought both my current ballasts and bulbs off eBay for $35 lol. they're still going good, although one is delayed about 1 second when I turn them on now.

These are the connecter/adapters we all need I'm pretty sure, $8.50 lol
eBay Link (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Red-2-x-D2C-D2R-D2S-Connector-Adaptor-Hid-Ballast-Bulbs-/260761852335?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cb69e19af)

I'm trying to work out which shrouds were used on that blue P5 as I love that look. OEM but stands out.

mynameisdaniel
12-05-2011, 01:39 PM
Okay no problem I'll get a price from him next time he responds. Awaiting a shipping cost at the moment.
I'll ask about the rings too, it says when you buy the projectors + shrouds you get them free but best to confirm :)

12-05-2011, 02:35 PM
Now would be the best to these now with the aud so strong, means your paying less then the prices listed, so whatever postage is, youre still infront ;)

Im not interested in getting some, but these d2s globes would work with say a h7 ballast?

mynameisdaniel
12-05-2011, 03:06 PM
Sure you're not interested Marc? It's actually looking a lot cheaper than I was willing to pay :D

Yeah they'll work providing the wattage is the same and you buy this connector (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Red-2-x-D2C-D2R-D2S-Connector-Adaptor-Hid-Ballast-Bulbs-/260761852335?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cb69e19af) so you can actually plug them in. :)

Just trying to work out how much it'll cost to send it in Aus. You guys are pretty close aren't you? I can send it out to one of you and then you can split it there. Probably about $20 to send from what I calculated as I'd feel much better having it insured and tracked.

And just in time for tax time. I may buy another set of headlights so I can take my time and experiment with colour choice of the inners. Anyone ever painted there sp20 headlight any other colour but black. Say to match the body colour??

Seen it done in red and yellow, I personally don't like it, but I must admit it would stand out and give a very unique look. :) If you did it and painted the projector shroud black it could look alright...

Should be easy the second time :)
I've already taken my headlights to bits, wired up an old computer power supply to test the lights, just have to find somewhere I can mount them and mark the light output before I start cutting... That and wait for my cheapo eBay bulbs to rock up :p

Any reason you can't use yours? Just mark where you had the reflector, mark the output, cut out, put the reflector back on the marks and match the projector output.

What are we marking out now??

Have to mark on a wall where your light cutoff is, that way when you put the projectors in they'll have a nice flat cuttoff.

There is a lot of vertical and horizontal adjustment so it's mainly the rotation you want to get right. :)

A.E
21-06-2011, 07:45 PM
Could I just adjust it when I put them in?? Or you mean the projectors before they go in the headlights. I'm lost at to what your on about lol.

I've taken the chrome reflector right out of the housing so it won't matter where my adjustment screws were, exactly like that link above, you should be able to still fit a halogen bulb in there and wire it up to a car battery or computer to get the cutoff, otherwise you'll have to source a left and right headlight.....

Ahh, yeah that'll work too. Not really just getting everything ready to go, got my last exam on Saturday so should be all go after that :)
Hopefully a full week on it and they'll be done, although it's too cold and wet to paint anything properly now.

Ahhh cheering im doing the same bumper and lights are coming off this weekend. good luck with the exam. and set up the garage or something with a little room heater. u going to painy your reflector?

mynameisdaniel
22-06-2011, 02:14 PM
Cheers, I don't have a dehumidifier so won't be any good painting in the garage. Yeah going to paint the low beam reflector, also got a spare pair of shrouds to paint and see if I prefer chrome or black :)
Got my bulbs today so I took the HIDs out of my car and put the crappy halogens back in. Set up one of the projectors turned it on in the middle of the day (overcast) and it lit up everything I pointed it at up. :D
Tip: Don't bother looking directly into the beam from the projector, it just hurts and you can't see anything for the next minute....

Haha yeah, just like you'd expect :) It's a bit distorted close up (1m away), but I was limited to being inside so the furthest I could shine it was 30m or so, and it was a very sharp and distinct line at that distance :D Also has a really nice colour band with the spacer in it :)

If you can find an old computer the power supply produces 12V just like your car, nice and easy. Can even be wired up to run when the computer's off (using a paperclip) :)
I've been looking into this for at least a year so bookmarked a lot of stuff in that time :p

any DECENT supply will work. 50w @ 12V = 4A. so any laptop supply will work with a correct connector. (JUST GET POLARITY RIGHT!) ive got lab supplies up to 2000W at my disposal, never really considered others dont have the same...guess im wrong! anyway BE CAREFUL with pc supplies. managed to get a 240v boot off one when i was younger and stupider.

Got Dad to give me a hand :D It's not too hard to do really, just spent a lot of time on the first one not wanting to dremel too much away. I held it in position and Dad put some tape across the back to hold it there. Marked where the bolts have to go and just drilled the holes. Put it back together and it works well. Probably spent about 5 hours all up on the first one and about 2 on the second one. Now I've got to sand back all the chrome and paint everything. I'm not going to glue or silicone anything as the plastic of the headlight is more than strong enough and some nylox nuts will stop it coming loose from the vibrations :)

mynameisdaniel

You can't see much of the reflector but the problem is the bit you can see shows the bolts pretty clearly which isn't as neat as I'd like. Going to paint the reflector to to stop this and maybe later on make some shrouds up to cover everything that's exposed :)

Here's them chrome, which looks nice and OEM but I'm still going to go for black. Have to wait for a warm day to paint them first though :(

I'd suggest trying some of this to remake the thread - it's awesome stuff. Just make sure you keep turning it on the thread as it dries, otherwise it'll stick in place!

Found a much cheaper solution :) Depending on how badly you stripped yours DB try wrapping some plumbers tape (white stuff that's kind of rubbery) around the thread of the actual bolt. Obviously it's not the most reliable solution as it's now plastic on rubber but it works enough to hold in it place and allow adjustment :)

Yeah mine are tight enough so I'll probably just leave them, I still can't decide between chrome or black shrouds, do the chrome ones look a lot like eyes from a distance?
And my adjustment should be fine as they only hit the surround when the adjustment is maxed out :)

Unless you have bixenon projectors you can't. Although if you buy expensive bulbs and ballasts $200+ the warm up time is very short. You could flash with HIDs using the spark when it ignites but it wouldn't be great for your ballasts....

my 55W kit in my High beams has been flashed a bazillion times in 2 years. same bulbs and ballasts are still working a treat. theyve lasted longer than any halogen bulb I previously used so from my experience flashing hasnt caused instant destruction of them.

Does anyone know the current draw of a 35W HID??
Im interested in fitting one to my scooter as it only has a 35 W H4 bulb wired so it only uses the high beam filament.
My research has shown that a 35 W HID has a high initial start up current and drops back once running.
But how many amps is it when going, is it more or less than a normal 35 W bulb.

ok, so phil and I have determined that (MY 35W single globe and ballast) draws 80W of power, it has a low inital start, then builds to 80W after 2-3 seconds then settles down to its running Wattage. meaning. these ballasts are not 35W out, or are very inefficient. because they never really get warm I can only guess they put out closer to 40W. I am sorry but i dont have the equipment to test that sorry :(

Morimoto Mini Projectors:
http://www.theretrofitsource.com/images/products/hid-projectors/Projectorsl.jpg

Dam, got alot of attention over the retro lol but yea, there is not trimming needed at all to the housing. If I wanted to, I could take the projector out and put the stock halogen in right now, with no extra modifications. The projector just slides through the bulb opening, then you sandwich like a silicone washer on the back of the projector to the lense, and use the included adapter to tighten against the back of the reflector.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l317/simonn_01/101_0646.jpg

this picture shows everything. The back of the projector is sticking out of the box, the adapter is the first piece to the right of the box, then the silicone "washer" that goes on the back of the projector, then the locknut to the right of that. All the way to the right of the picture is the piece that holds the bulbs in, you have to remove it to stick the projector through the reflector.

And some fitted in non SP20 headlights

yes, but they're not ADR or ECE compliant and the beam pattern is for right hand traffic (wrong side of the road)... in fact, I doubt they have any compliancy at all, which brings doubts of legality in most developed countries. If you look at the pic gallery from their site, you will see what I mean. Besides that point, you really get what you pay with lighting, just like anything... quality, well manufactured optics don't come cheap! If you are after well performing headlamps (I presume that's the intention, since you want HIDs), you will need to do some research and select something good and legal. :)

I'm afraid you will have to stick to buying parts locally, from the UK, Japan, or any other country of your choosing that has left hand traffic (correct side of the road).... While it is remotely possible to buy LHT lighting equipment in RHT countries (such as the US), it will take a long time and may even be more expensive... oh, and I recommend you find ECE compliant projectors so that it meets ADR's requirements in order to avoid those nasty defect violations ;)

becareful also of which ECE regulations a particular projector complies to.... if it complies to r19, they are fog lamps... if they comply with r98, then that is what you want :)

Still happy with how mine came out and it was a good project. When I do a project car I'll definitely be throwing some of the Minis in there though ;)

Yeah they all come in RHD as well and to make projectors legal in Australia they need autolevelling and washers. Neither of which I had but who's going to know?

JDM323
05-12-2011, 05:13 AM
that's why you stick to 4300 kelvin as oem fitments use
if you want the blue of the higher kelvin associated with lost light output then expect the blue and red in the rear view
in short as with any other mod be sensible about it

oops, didn't see that
but I still question its quality and the beam pattern

$120 is cheap for sure, but if I was going through the trouble of fitting projectors into my headlamps, I would spend extra to get ECE approved projectors instead... they're illegal here, but ECE approved equipment is a general good rule of thumb for good, SAFE performance (there are bad and good ones too of course) :)

if sp20 low beams stay on with high beam then use that as your ballast trigger and use the high beam for cut off solenoid
if lows go off when highs come on then use power diodes from high and low to ballast via relay and still take cut off solenoid from high beam before the power diode

hope this helps

Ah k cool, nah haven't got any yet, might order some today then and I'll order those connectors too.

But just to confirm, I don't need any switches, relays, triggers or the like do I...?!? :)

I'll get on to it a bit quicker now cause I had been waiting for the front lip and bumper brackets to get here so I could take the front bar off and do all three in one day. Everything is here now (other than ballasts/connectors) so I have no excuses!! :o

hid balastas??

HIDs require an additional part to power them, in the form of a ballast.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I found this on Mazdas247 and thought it may interest a few members, seeing as though no cutting is required! :D

Dam, got alot of attention over the retro lol but yea, there is not trimming needed at all to the housing. If I wanted to, I could take the projector out and put the stock halogen in right now, with no extra modifications. The projector just slides through the bulb opening, then you sandwich like a silicone washer on the back of the projector to the lense, and use the included adapter to tighten against the back of the reflector.

this picture shows everything.

I have a pic of the light output, but I still have some very minor tweaking to do before Ill post the pic.
I went to a car meet last night and everybody there was amazed at the light output, I like them so much, I might actually put the "TheRetrofitSource" sticker on my car lol

Haha nah, just the ballasts and the connectors. Once you have all the parts it should be a bit easier to explain as you can only really plug stuff in to where it physically fits. All the switches, triggers, relay side of things is handled by the car as it would normally. :)

I definitely recommend the mini ones if you're wanting to do it yourself. If you're fussy like me you will spend HOURS with a dremel trying to get the FX-Rs sitting perfect!

I don't have any fogs lights yet, but I did flog the fog light switch out of the SP20 on the all you can carry day so I have saved $$ there.

I am looking at options before I buy anything.
I don't mind having to cut up the factory covers that mount where spotlights would go to mount decent aftermarket lights.
Would love some HID driving lights.

The loom was chopped to pieces by someone ripping the front bumper off, they destroyed a lot of the car taking it off.
But a loom is not hard to make as I will probably be fitting custom driving lights.
I have thought about the fieldbreak bumper many times.
I think it doesn't look right, the fieldbreak kits make the car look like a 4WD,
I dont think it would suit my car being dumped on the ground as it is now.

A dremel is a small hand tool that has multiple different attachments for different tasks.
Eg polishing, cutting, trimming.

Indeed hard to find. I've been looking high and low. Seem to have just "vanished" from the earth.

You reckon they will look the same as the full build ones? Cause i don't want to fork out the money then be disappointed that i didn't get the huge looking ones.

After looking at the connectors on eBay I think I have a bit more of an idea how it works, but if you've got a pic for me that would still be awesome!

Ordered some 5 buck ballasts and connector last night from Honkers so prob be a few weeks before I see them.

So have you sold the car yet...?!?

Hi Marc, I'd be interested in possibly getting some of these.. but only hope some sort of shrouds like the E55-R projector shrouds would fit as I like the look of mynameisdaniel and SP20DB's.
