WOW they are BIG!!, OH and my poor neglected excel across the road, was my first car, not the most powerful car, but was grunty, and hey if you cant go fast with 70kw 700 isnt going to help you :)

When I inspected the car it had a few little scratches you cant see, but a few days later i started to get a funny smell when i turned the air on, turns out the car was leaking oil from the rocker cover, so bought some new gaskets and some sealant and apart it came :) with some help from my old boy *mechanic*...http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h346/muzza1393/IMG_0252.jpg http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h346/muzza1393/IMG_0251.jpg
and presto we replaced the gaskets and YAY!!, so far soo good :), oh and as you can see was very mucky in there :(, but we gave it a clean.

Last night I was reading up on some small mods that may not help you burn a wrx, but it will put a smile on your face. I was reading up on what the hell that white box attached to my air intake is, and its a resenator and yada yada, So I ripped it out :)http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h346/muzza1393/IMG_0261.jpg
weird looking thing huh?
The job was meant to be a very easy one...well turns out NOT if you have a air con and im just guessing but thats YOU IN THE V6, well that was the case for me anyway so had to unbolt some brackets and try really hard not to stuff these hoses up http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h346/muzza1393/IMG_0260.jpg
its a very tight squeeze!
so i unbolted this pipe from the bottom of the air intake BOXhttp://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h346/muzza1393/IMG_0263.jpg and got this weird stuff from dad, I'm not entirely sure what its original purpose is, but hey!! did exactly what i needed it for :)
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h346/muzza1393/IMG_0264.jpg so I attached it to the pipe and then re-attached to the intake box http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h346/muzza1393/IMG_0265.jpg and if you get under the front of your car there is this plastic cover that is around about near your gearbox and it has this perfect little rectangle hole in it that was perfect for putting the other end of the pipe into, so it's direct air!!, and then a peace of fly screen over the top just for safe measure, lol and yes may sound like a tight ass but hey it works :)

Front & Rear Brace ?
Front lip/side skirts ?

Can go on and on, on basic mod's but depends waht you want or can afford ;)

hmmm indeed, well I really want to lower it, I may have a set of whitelines coming my way very soon, as for exhaust being the kid I am lol, the first thing i did was cut of the muffler and put in straight pipe and a tip, just to get some sort of note from the exhaust cause it was SO soft.

as for a air filter went to supercheap and let me tell you not that cheap ay, 125 for a k&n pannel filter so Im going to save bits and peaces here and there till I really want it, after a week or two of having it without the muffler i decided to buy a cannon, so that should be here tomoz :) or the next day :(.

And at the risk of sounding like a complete noob, im not entirely sure what they do? lol...coilovers I mean.

hey noble, umm i don't know man just want it to look sexier, maybe a kit in the future, and would like a bit more go, I tried racing sly323 in his gf,s sp23 and from a stand still it spun all the way into second gear and if I had to call I winner I'd say it was him but not by heaps, and on the highway same story.
sly also said that his 4cyl and most should beat a Holden v6, well I tried my luck with a guy in a vt and me and the gf in my astina and well I kept up with him, but did not win at all lol, now I know it's not all about this but what is everyone else's experience?

Welcome, Welcome! Just for your everyones information, the "racing" done was done in a safe and mature manner on dead country roads, where we could hurt no one but ourselves.

Welcome, the edit post button is your friend, 4 posts in a row makes me queasy.
It looks a fairly clean example of the car. Good to see you've got a bit of maintenance know how around. As for the cannon, eh, whatever floats ur boat. If it Sounds great then $40 well spent.

And yep keep them races to the track cause we all know popo can spot a p plate from 2 k down the road.

Just noticed (and am envious of) the sunroof. Lucky.

Just noticed (and am envious of) the sunroof. Lucky.[/QUOTE]

I know I'm lucky, but if I can be quite ounest I didn't love this car before I went to see it, I only went to see it cause it had a sunroof and then I had a good look a it and it's quite a sxc car, the astina I mean (not just mine). I had a friend that owned one for years I used to just get in and out of it like it wasn't anything speacial, then again his was that green colour lol sorry if anyone has a green astina, it's just I like the darker colours and 7onyd's white is a sxc car.

It'll make it start to oversteer and allow you to go around corners heaps more aggressively. But it can also get you into trouble which is why they don't put them on stock, cause they figure people will oversteer and spin out. But worth the money! Forgot you have a v6! With strut brace already.

mattylagana
17-07-2011, 01:53 PM
ahh ok guy I'll keep that in mind, though do you think the oversteer is needed for everyday driving ?

ahh ok guy I'll keep that in mind, though do you think the oversteer is needed for everyday driving ?no. and none of the mods you currently have are needed for everyday driving either... i also think the oversteer aspect was exaggerrated a little earlier also. the BA astinas, (both I4 and V6) have massive front sway bars. you'd have to be doing some really poor driving and unsettling the car to find you can oversteer it after a 20mm rear swaybar is fitted.

Depends.
You can do it the way Tony did (much better way) an take your headlights apart and put them in.
Or
You can do it my way, buy an $8 led strip set, use some double sided tape for non adhesive surfaces (i.e. Sticks to everything) an stick them on the underside of the headlights.

mattylagana

Is there a thread on led lights?

Clean_Cookie
19-07-2011, 10:28 AM
look in tonys thread, my thread also has some photos. wired to parker lights. i used silicone to sick the led strips onto the top of the actual glass headlight. never melted or anything and ive had them on for ages. still goin too. i was originally going to buy flexible EL wire and run it around the edges of my bonnet so that it would glow but 1: it costs a fair bit and 2: AFAIK it wouldnt be legal... make sure the lights arent too BLUE as they are illegal on anything other than an emergency vehicle. no amber either (only for indicators and fog lights)...

mattylagana
19-07-2011, 03:10 PM
err seems a bit fussy for me ay, would pay somone in wlongong area haha

Clean_Cookie
19-07-2011, 03:42 PM
fussy? umm buy strips off ebay for less than $10. add silicone and stick to headlights. then strip off a bit of the insulation and splice onto parkers. tape up (add solder if you want to do a decent job) and test. if they arent working swap the wires around (as Diodes only pass current one way...-the D in LED if you didnt figure that out already!-)

^this

It's very simple. If you just want them off the parking lights it's as simple as that.
You can pull the bulbs out of the Parking lights so u can poke the LED wires into the terminals to test before you start splicing insulation.
There's insulation splitters, maybe $15? I just used scissors and a razor blade and some patience. I didn't use solder just tape incase I get pulled over for them one day it'll be easy to rip them apart. Mine are slightly blue (as all "white" LEDs seem to be).

mattylagana
19-07-2011, 05:36 PM
err pulled up for them? get fined

mikey_something
19-07-2011, 06:08 PM
In theory any cop having a bad night could decide my lights are too blue for his liking.
There's pretty much something on every members car that could be fined if the cop was feeling like it.
Uncovered pods, lowering, big wheels, loud exhausts.
Welcome to car modifications.
You'll be hassled less by the cops if you sell your car and become an axe murderer.

EDIT: a fine would be at said cops discretion. a warning would be more likely for LED strips...

mattylagana
19-07-2011, 06:26 PM
just reading your last post angers me ay lol, how is a covered pod any safer or more legal then an uncovered one?, lowering your car in a reasonable manner does nobody harm, and the exhaust being loud they havnt herd loud till they catch some idiot in a bombadore with his exhaust chopped after the manifold!

mikey_something
19-07-2011, 06:38 PM
uncovered pod is something about the oiled filters COULD catch fire... there was a story about it all over the news some time ago with a "bunch of hoons". riiiiight :/ defect
lowering is all about ground clearance, i might be wrong but 110mm from the lowest point of the car? (this includes the exhaust, catches some people out) defect
and >90dB for exhaust is defect.
HIDs could probly be defected/fined too. >6000K and its asking for trouble. Blueish LEDs can be a fine or a warning. it just depends.

If you get pulled over, dont be an asshat.

Mate got pulled over for loud exhaust. She gave the cop a bit of lip. Before she knows it he's got the bonnet up and got her defected for:
uncovered pod, missing battery bracket, loose battery terminals, exhaust hanging too low, sideskirts too low, bald tyres, A-Pillar Gauges, and of course noise pollution from the exhaust.
If she kept her mouth shut, she may have gotten away with a simple defect fixable by a silencer. anyway, thats just how it works.

help!!!! so I tried to install my springs today and got the fornt ones in no porblem, the springs looked preety much the same but the whitelines where a bit bigger then the stock ones, then went to install the rear springs the stock springs had all even coils, and the whitelines had 3 really close coils and the all even, and again bigger then stock, when placed on the strut I had trouble getting the center nut of the shock into the center of the top coil ( if u understand good work :)) finaly I got the nut on and got it back into the car an bolted on, and now I have a nocking noise from that spring, I left the rear left spring stock beacause I ran out of daylight, I got out of the car and shoock the rear whiteline spring and I got a clunk noise as I pushed and pulled, my old boy says they must be for another car. does anyone have a picture of what whitelines should look like for my ba? or has anyone had this issue??

Btw the different coil spacing is what's referred to as progressive rate springs. First bit compresses easily and is comfortable and the more its compressed, the harder it becomes providing a stiffer more precise feel.

hi people, long time no post, so I found my car had a hidden oil leak, (****) so my guess was rocket cover gasket replaced the front one and still leaking so a few days ago replaced the other one an yep u guessed it still leaking. I was just wondering before I Jack it up an have a look anyone know of a common place toward the front of the motor (left hand side if u were looking at the winshield head one) ?

There are a couple of seals down that way I think? Are you sure it's an engine oil leak? Grab a torch, and go diving with your hands and see what you can feel and if there is any sign of there the oil leak begins. I'm not a big shot of knowledge on the v6 I'd probably look towards a lower intake manifold gasket for the leak (if it's definatly engine oil and not powersteer) as that seems to be common on SOME v6's. :)

if your not sure whether the oil is brown or red, you will be farting in the wind. I'd be confirming that first! Btw, P/S is on the opposite side of OP's leak problem.

You really need to give engine a good degrease. Dive for a while. Let it cool & then determine exactly what type of oil is leaking. Then, locate it......

Well my guess is it's an import. Mind you there's no import plate. It's 85' 1.6 efi sohc. All the features the car has would make it a ss just minus the turbo, but it's listed as a super deluxe! :)

According to Redbook the BF series 1 was released in October 1985 in both 1.6 and 1.6i.
Its a shame we never got the 1.6 DOHC EFI with the first generation of VICS on it here, it was a great engine in its time(82KW). I had one in an 1987 Mazda Étude.

Well I never knew that. I had an 85' BD 1.5L auto Super Deluxe. Musta been the last of them I guess? Silver with sunroof, P/S, sunroof bit not the elect windows like the DOHC SS turbo. Also had a BD SS 1.5L 5 speed twin carbs that went like the clappers. Back then wanted the turbo one. Not the carb model but the EFI. Very rare. But then the BF B6T just was the ants pants.....;)

13-11-2011, 11:27 PM
Im really impressed so far, they are way better than the old brakes and haven't fully bedded in yet.
DBA street series slotted rotors were the best I could find available for my car and as my car is stuck in traffic and doesn't get its brakes hot enough I went with QFM HPX pads.

mattylagana
13-11-2011, 11:31 PM
the qfm hpx pads. as good as bendix? also are the Above brakes in link any good?

phildough
14-11-2011, 12:17 AM
I was going to get RDA but the price quoted by GSL was so little extra to get the DBA discs.
As far as the pads go the QFM HPX pads are in a league above the Bendix pads I took off the car.

you ain't gonna win any braking competitions on the rdas, but for a street car, they are fine.
qfm depending on which one you get are dusty as all hell, but brake very well.
lucas = dust + very good braking.

Just so you know the A1RM pads take a bit of warming up and when they are cold they wont be as good.
As far as Astinas go you can only get DBA street series rotors for them.
Im really happy with my new rotors and they look the goods too.

After looking at phils and mine, we both agreed that the centres of the dba are way better and won't rust! Who knows which perform better, went for a drive in phils car and I think the brakes on mine are a touch better at the moment... But its early days, totally different cars and different tyres. I'd go remsa pads, I pad only a few dollars more than the hpx but have 650 degree temps and grip as well if not better than the hpx. But, they are dusty. They would be the next step up though. Greg mentioned something about ferraris or porshe use them, don't quote me on that.

dba slotted rotors: $99.00 each (front and rears)
and qfm hpx pads 79.00 for front set and 79.00 for rear set
so all up looking at $400 for rotors
and $160 for all round brakes
so time to start saving :$
but joke of the day I called auto barn and they quoted me $250 per rotor front and 158 per rear rotor lol I just laughed and didn't bother asking about brakes

V6 suspension is mostly different, so you'll need to replace it with same.

The coilover can be rebuilt, but until you actually take it off and check if it's bent then there's no way to tell if it even needs it. And if the body of the coilover is bent, then it's useless.

Until you get it checked out, there's no way of knowing what is needed

rupe!! an input?

Patience! I'm not online all day :p

update on issues: the front and rear stbaliser bars ( tier arm rods?) were both bent and little rod from swaybar to shock was bent, however it seems the swaybar just got pushed over to the rear left about an inch but didnt bend ?, also coilover looks ok as does bar from hub to front of rear door, hope my dodgy descriptions do the trick :)

kj 1.8L I4 laser rear brakes are the same as ba 2.0L V6 astina rear brakes. *do let annyone else tell you different.

Yes, I4 and V6 rear calipers and mounts are the same. Rotors and hubs are different.

Cosmo Dude

The 1.8 hub is 4-stud so it would cost more in the end to modify them to fit the 5-stud. Some were ABS and most were not.

$200 is a cheap repair bill IMHO. Buy a new bearing while you're at it too.

V6 has an integral bearing from memory, hence the higher price.

Would that make the bearing harder or easier to replace?

Well you don't replace it - you just replace the whole hub.
