For those of you that don't know, there is a web based IRC chat where you can come and chat instead of working, LOL

Generally populated during the day, this link will get you to a window where you put in your nickname and away you go

Thanks must go to Dogo for getting it all working well, kudos to you!!

So come and say hello!!

AstinaGT Chat (http://www.astinagt.com/irc/)

Either the chat room is broken or my computer will not let me use it :(

Dogo

can u give more detail of the problem ?

Nate
18-02-2004, 09:19 PM
it comes up saying "connecting"
then after about 1 minute it says "unable to connect : null"

Dogo

are u behind a firewall ? i dont think the chat applet will pass through some firewalls.

i tried it and got a similar error, but at that time there was a person in the chat room using the online applet, so it does work.

maybe there's a problem with brisbane's austnet server.

i'll look into it a bit more.

for ppl who dont know, if u have an irc program such as mirc, u can also connect to this chat room by going to an austnet.org server and joining channel #astina

Mm, bit of a dumb question, but is this chat room linked to IRC? And if so, what server/room name is it?

There is a dedicated IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channel located on the Austnet.org server - #astina - and there's usually someone in there!

Help!

I'm running Windows 2000, and while the applet installs and runs, it always says "Unable to connect". I've checked my security settings, and they all appear normal. Anybody have any ideas? Anybody else running Windows 2000 that have managed to get it working or are having problems?

Thanks
Gazz

Edit:- The actual error emssage is - "Unable to connect: null"

i get that half the time, just close all your explorer windows and try again and you should get in

i get that sometimes too. even when using a normal IRC chat program.

the austnet irc system is hosted across a number of servers. The chat program defaults to au.austnet.org , and from that, austnet tries to find the best server to direct you to. ( eg the most appropriate one in your state ).

I've kept it this way rather than specifying an exact server due to the wide geographical range of our users. if you already know of the best server to your location, you can specify that directly, or you can press 'Connect' again ( works best if you wait until u get the unable to connect message ) and have it look again.

often i find that the new zealand austnet servers work quite well. so if you find that u cant get thru on an au server, type the following into the irc applet :

/server nz.austnet.org

it seems to work fairly well and is a simpler solution :D

I'm with Swiftel, but they haven't enabled my account yet, even though ADSL has been enabled on my phone line, grrrrr...the modem gets an ADSL connection, but the Username or Password is invalid, which they aren't. Oh, well, leave it a day, and hope the credit card goes through (they don't enable till they get the OK from the bank).

BBwwahahaha!! Something similar happened over here too.. i had to put in my full email address to log on, not just the username.. Go figure..

What speed did you get? I got the 512/128 with a 10GB limit, download [uploading is free!]

Man this is freaken cool..

MrShadow

Hehe, so who you with, Swiftel as well? I only got the 256/64 with 1Gb for now. After living with 2400 bps (yes BPS), the 33.6, then 56K, this rocks, big time!

On topic though, I'm still unable to connect even using the nz server. Might just fire up ye old mIRC client *shudder*

Dogo

ur proxy might be blocking it.

if u can install software, use that rather, or maybe see if u can jsut get mirc or similar to run from a floppy.

the irc web applet does seem to have trouble connecting sometimes. dont know why as yet.

It would seem as though the lunchtime rants of regular members have died off in the IRC channel of late.. Even the topic has changed

* Now talking in #astina
* Topic is 'www.AstinaGT.com :: Where has everybody gone!'
* Set by Xedos on Wed Aug 25 15:38:46

Sad sad sad state of affairs..

Here is a direct link to the IRC channel.. maybe this can be put onto the AGT pages as an individual button, maybe under the Forum button..

IRC Chat AGT Channel (irc://au.austnet.org/astina) <-- you will need an external IRC chat program like mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/) or the Mozilla Suite (http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/) [with incorporated chat program] to use this link.

to all those trillian users (coz more than one chat program is totally needed  ) you can set it to auto conenct to the IRC channels.........

and yahoo..........

and AIM.........

and ICQ..........

did i mention IRC? no? well i did just then

mrpayner

If you don't know what Trillian is, this is their Website (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/learn/)

For those who want it you can get Trillian HERE (http://www.austnet.org/support/software/downloads/trillian-v0.74.exe)

Heh.. no worries.. Nah, i tried it but decided it was a little too fiddly.. plus i liked the way that mIRC has all chat windows in a main window to keep precious task bar space for other apps.. I just wish MSN would follow suit.

hehe, i don't even know where the window went, i restarted and it was all good

Mirc is good, especially if you want to user other windows

if your on windoze there, try grouping the taskbar options, but then you have the pain of not knowing who your talking to (if your like me and talk to over 4 people at once)

Does anybody know of a program like trillian that will run just
from the exe file and doesn't install. I would like a program I can
keep on a floppy or cd that can run from there for when at work.

I used to do this with mIRC, but I haven't tried doing it for at least 2-3 years... Maybe if you find an older version somewhere...

mrpayner

Hi Mal..

I found this comprehensive site (http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=mirc) with all the older versions of mIRC if you wish to download a version. I'd like to be able to use mIRC at work, but firewalls get in the way, even on the web-based versions. :(
