Get the BG SP Hatchback.. they're the pick of the bunch if you can afford it..
DOHC 1.8 EFI, Power windows, sunroof [i believe] .. check Redbook (http://www.redbook.com.au/Vehiclesearch/Detail.asp?key=MAZD92AK) to find out about the specifications..Hopefully that link will take you straight to the page i was looking at.. I know that they're not always right but it will give you an idea...

sunroof [i believe]

I think all the Astinas over the entire model range have power everything and aircon......
Well done to Adam for the redbook link... I found it quite interesting actually!!!
Cheers!

No, not all. My sisters didn't have power windows (not sure about mirrors). Only done 100,000, 92 model. She got about $7K for hers. Look for worn door seals, and rust around the windscreen/hatch area.
Oh, as for Redbook being interesting, (I think I've posted this before), but it lists my 96 Hardtop as being worth at least as much as, if not more than, my dad's 2000 protege! Go figure, I'm not complaining! 8) 8) 8)
I paid $6000 for my 1992 SP. Tt had done 179000 klm's but had been well mainatined and and came with very tatsy 16 inch wheels and a LOUD exhaust :D
Also i dont know how it works in NSW but in QLD you get a 30 day 1000 klm warrenty on all second hand yard cars. I had a racq inspection performed on mine (cost $120) and then took the report to the yard i bought it from and made him fix every little problem :D

BG10P1 and also BG10P2
what is the difference between the 2 ??
also before rod says anything about me finally seeing the light I can't make up my mind so I have decided to get 1 of each lol (laser and an astina)
Thanks again
Rob
BG10P1 and also BG10P2
what is the difference between the 2 ??
BG10P1 was series 1 (came with "mazda" written inside the grill)
BG10P2 was series 2 (came with the renault style logo)
think thats it anyway

the series 1 was painted black under the front bumper, while the series 2 was bodycolor under there. different hubcaps on the later SOHC ones - they picked up the same ones as on the BA 4 cyl
both come in Astina ans Astina SP models. SP had all the extra goodies, plus a twin cam (DOHC) version of the BP engine (versus a SOHC version in the base model)

Astina vs Astina SP? SP has 1.8 DOHC as already mentioned, came standard with sunroof (have a look for rust around the seals and underneath em), 14" basic alloys, grippier seats (quite nice.... padding wears quickly tho with big ppls as is only foam.. may need to use carpet pile to keep it firm), cassette stereo with graphic equaliser, recalibrated suspension if i remember correctly, power everything (normal Astina had wind windows), and is manual only i think.
series 1 vs series 2?: series 2 had a bit more modern alloys, some new colours, different trim. Thats it.
Go the SP without a doubt. I love it; they're bulletproof in terms of reliability, handle well, go well enuff, and look good for the age. Resale is great, they're still popular so holding value very well.
Comprehensive insurance for completely stock is about $700 for an under 25 (AAMI with 60% no claim) to $1500 for basic mods insured with a value of $10000 on the car (NRMA and GIO - 60% no claim).
Fuel consumption is not the best, although I don't really care.
Common prob areas to look at b4 buying: water pumps, CV boots, engine mounts, paint fade on red and grey cars. If it takes more than about 2 minutes to get to normal operating temp, then have thermostat and rad checked out.
SP prices should range from $4500 for pretty used car to $9000 for top condition with low kms.

puching it i have had it down to 300 klm from a full tank but granny driving you can get 500 - 550 klm out of a tank (doesnt happen very often :P)

Farq... Bruce goes 'only' 300km on a tank when given a fair few bootfuls through traffic, A/C on etc etc ... To have a non puffed 1.8L doing the same is quite an achievement..
