Hi guys, todays question is one needed to be answered asap!

just found this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mazda-323-Astina-1997-5D-Hatchback-5-SP-Manual-1-/270794148530?pt=AU_Cars&hash=item3f0c96cab2

and as some of you have know, i have been looking for a white hatch, and there is a distinct lack of them on ebay/carsales for less than 5000 in QLD.

so. my questions are: has anyone RECENTLY REPARIED AND REGISTERED a writeoff, or knows someone who has. associated costs involved etc.

also. anyone have a car trailer or access to one (for money - less than a tow truck. i know they can be hired for $500/day - which seems crazy as ive seen them for sale for as little as 2000!)

also, regarding the whole BPT transplant. this is the only thing this car has against it i think... im under the impression that my current setup is currently illegal as ive swapped an older engine (albeit same size/make) into my HT. if i were to do a BPT conversion, would the same thing prevent me for registering it in QLD. + getting it engineered etc...?

i would run a stock ECU for the GTX etc and fully stock turbo (sleeper style, no BOV ricy stuff...if that matters>?)

only has 155K on the clock which is nice too. if the associated costs in getting it to my place/stamp duty/fees and etc for roadworthy/re-registering the thing came to less than 3K it would be an OK deal. all depends on the costs associated in doing so. good practise for body work too :p

thanks guys and hopefully i can have my dream come true for under $10k (fully built/registered/insured/legal/refreshed.. :)

adding to the useful info:

COSTS FOR INSPECTION:

Queensland Inspection Services fees are A$450 for cars and, A$350 for motorbikes and trailers.

These fees are comparable to equivalent inspections in other states with flat fees of A$470 in Victoria, A$416 in the Australian Capital Territory and A$406 for a full inspection in New South Wales.

Note: In New South Wales, some vehicles in areas where full inspections are not available, can be re-registered on a lower level identify check. This is called a 'blue slip' and is not accepted by other states in place of a written-off vehicle inspection. Vehicles that have been issued a 'blue slip' are required to undergo a full written-off vehicle inspection before they can be registered in Queensland or other states.

The written-off vehicle inspection service is provided by Queensland Inspection Services who are the approved contractor to Department of Transport and Main Roads to provide these inspections across Queensland. The fee was determined as part of the contract. The Department of Transport and Main Roads followed a formal and open procurement process through the calling of public tenders. Queensland Inspection Services were successful in being awarded this contract following detailed assessment of tenders received. This included the capacity of the tendered to provide the inspection service across Queensland.

unrelated random fine for the day: If you fail to display a safety certificate on the vehicle from the moment you offer it for sale you may receive an on-the-spot fine of A$500.

repairable right off is just like registering a unregistered car. plus some extra paperwork.

this car has been classed as a repairable write off as the insurance company has deemed repairing it will cost as much as the car itself.

i have spoken to the owner about this specific car. i'm pretty keen to buy it. but i only really want 2 parts from it.

it'll go for around $1000. it'll need a fair bit of work to bring it back to normal condition. lots of 2nd hand parts plus a bit solid rubber mallet should do the trick. goo thing is, with a new hatch and rear bumper, then damage will be hidden.

I've done heaps of repairable write offs from insurance companys either parts cars or donor cars mixed with one good shell. It cost nothing if you know thwe right people for paper work. As long as the car is not written off against the Local authorites you don't need them ot inspect. IN NSW it is as stated the blue slip. But if they know it was in a accident they can demand a full inspection.

That car looks clean but one thing I've been carefull of is hidden damage to frames etc.
I got stung once with a last model Volvo 850 - needed a jig to get it straight on the front left corner as it was just the strut top smashed out. AAMI wrote it off because it was too new. Plus as we found out hiring the Jig is not easy EG who has it we had to get it towed to the North shore - jigged up and stragihten on the frame they took off one inner panel said can't use again only available new. In the end we didn't really make anything out of it. We were lucky it was hit PARKED. other wise the airbags would of made it too expensive.

But hidden unforseen costs are your worst enemy. but I have a general rule - Anything out of rego more then 3 months - Unregistered and anything damaged needing major repair work is not worth touching. Except for parts.

Ok, sounds like with a bit of $$$ its not hard to get it back together. What about the engine swap? Might give the dot a call today. I can hire a trailer for 6hrs for $80 which is ok they say you need an inspection but how do you get it there? Can you get temp cover from home to garage for the wrc?

You can apply for a 1 day rego so you can drive you car to the road worthy etc.
I think its quite expensive.

Thanks Phil. Well after a revs etc check its clear and guess what!!! It was first sold in 4066! Thought that was hilarious. 2nd owner, been looked after ok in the interior. Was their sons from what I gathered. Wasn't his first car... Totally stock - forgot what it looked like with all the plastic there haha. Written off in mid may.

But. Has factory fitted alarm and immobilser, the guy took the battery out to charge and maintain it and when he connected it and opened the door it went off its nut. Disconnected horn but couldn't get it to disarm. Any ideas? So I couldn't test anything or the engine. Cracked strut tops and barely legal tires. Surface rust in boot, but lived undercover until the accident. Paint is dirty but may cut up ok.

Undecided if its worth it though. Missing both mirrors, broken anyway. Dents in doors roof, front bumper is good though. Leaking rocker and dizzy but not much, mainly from the refill of oil. Oil is ok.

Thats looks like its gonna require a fair few panels and bits. I'd say you're far better off finding 1 in one piece...

Yessir. Going to bid 600 but any more than that is wasteful IMHO.

Haha. That's good. Idk what to do. Just going to watch. If no one else bids I may but there's too many unknowns.

Well isn't it sad when the seats I want to put in a car are more expensive than the car! :S

won it for $500.
