Im just wondering whether there would be any gains to be had putting SP20 struts and springs on a BJII?

A slight gain as they have slightly better dampers, but if you are going to replace them look at some new struts and you will get even better response.
So far I have found that all SP20 parts fit the 1.8, apart from the brake discs etc as they are 4 stud.

What about ride height and hardness?

Same ride height unless you get lowering springs and you will most likely get a sportier ride.

What about these? http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com.au/viewitem?itemId=120815683391&index=22&nav=SEARCH&nid=31336060691 and buying new springs later, or would i be better buying new struts and springs straight up?

the SP20 rear springs are also a little stiffer than the 1.8 springs
front springs are the same

the struts definitely have better valving in the SP20, this will improve handling somewhat

the SP20 also has larger sway bars... easy swap for the rear, but not the front (not worth doing unless you get a big aftermarket bar combined with a big aftermarket rear bar)

generally speaking, it's not worth messing with these factory parts unless you're on a tight budget (2nd hand parts) or racing under certain class rules that allows you to use certain factory parts

I wouldn't bother, we've got both at home and compared to aftermarket springs both stock suspension set ups pretty much suck.
