View Full Version : Rear Wheel Scrubbing on 18's

I may be purchasing some new rims soon due to a crack in one of my current rims but I want to try and also correct the problem I've been having with rear scrubbing.

http://i39.tinypic.com/11tosop.jpg

Current Specs

18" x 7.5"
40mm Offset
215/35/18
Rear arches Rolled
Lowered 1.5"

The scrubbing occurs on the rear with a full car when I go over dips or bumps in the road. I don't know what the tyre is scrubbing against. Judging by the wheel clearance in the photo, could there be a possibility that I need new shocks/springs or could this scrubbing with a full load have always been a problem with the current setup?

Since I am on the market for new rims what wheel specifications do you recommend if I choose to buy a new set of:

18" rims
17" rims

If I drop to 17" with the current suspension I wonder how it will affect the wheel clearance and clearance from the car body to the ground.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is the arc rubbing? or the rear bumper bar.
or try get offset of 42 and above.

or get smaller tyres at the back, like 205x35x18 if it does exist though.
Or harder suspension.

Or add some camber to angle the wheels.

+42 offset will rub on the Astina, but +42 barely works on the Protege depending on the tyres used

+45 is the only sane option on Astinas

Can you see if its scrubbing the tire wall? If not mine use to scrub with 17 after i lowerd it but it was scrubbing the top of the wheel well. I did have 215/40 tyres changed them to 205/40 doesn't scrubb anymore unless i got a car load of ppl,

Remember he got the guards rolled as well..
so i reckon he should be fine with 205/35 or 205/40

Some tyres are squarer than others. I had scraping problems with the nexen rubber I got on it and when I changed to a rounder sidewall it fixed it!

Either get some good strong springs.
-OR-
Stop carrying fat chicks in the back of your car.

so i reckon he should be fine with 205/50WTF? That is 28mm bigger rolling diamete than his current 215/35R18s.

That will increase the rubbing/scrubbing. lol

Yer the guards being rolled is the lip being rolled in,
Where as mine was actually the top on the wheel arch was Rubbing the tyre, ( eg. If i had mates in the back it would sit on the tire and constantly rub, )
Changed tyres to 205/40 so the tyre gets streched across the rim so it's not square shaped doen't do it anymore unless the cars full of ppl and i'm going a round a corner a bit hard
