Powered by a new, direct-injection, turbocharged version of Mazda's 2.3-litre MZR engine, the power plant combines low emissions and excellent fuel efficiency with high performance. Delivering 206kW at 6,500rpm and 360Nm of torque at 3,500rpm the Mazda6 MPS concept qualifies as a serious driving machine. However, the engine meets all relevant low emission regulations including Euro IV and ULEV standards in the USA and Japan.

The power output may be greater than the posted kw as this is the highest rating that cars are allowed to have in the Japanese market.. You'll find that other high powered cars, like the STi WRX, has a power "rating" of the same 206kw but in actual fact I believe it is higher.. I guess the companies are under stating their power to stay within the guidelines of the Japanese Motoring autorities..

Still.. it will be interesting to see how much power it actuall does have when it reaches Australian shores.. I do like the look of this.. I remember a picture being posted up ages ago that was modded by Tony to which I have included below.. Hmmm... intercooler :D

twilightprotege
29-02-2004, 12:48 AM
yeah that's what i thought...i know people will buy it...but it'll be overpriced...esp when there's the liberty B4 available

BigBoyLemonade
29-02-2004, 12:08 PM
Nah Mazda Australia said its to compete against WRX STI and B4 so Im guessing around 55-60k.

I will be putting a pre-order to lease one soon as the business can afford one

ezin
29-02-2004, 01:41 PM
MMM looks ace! would have to be dam good to compete with the lib GT!! THe b4 was the last model lib which was crap!
There is nothing to compete with the sti in australia! we never get any good cars cause of bad fuel and a bad economy! the closest is the mitsu evo8 which is another 35grand just because not enough people buy them to bring the price down! I would so luv if we could get all these special models over here without the stuff around of importing them! hopfully things will change when they realise there is a market for them over here! I want a collection of all af them hahaha!

Ronin
29-02-2004, 11:19 PM
The EVO VIII is being imported to australia under low volume regulations, but this time will compete with the STi on price terms, which is what we need to hot up the local market even more.

Don't bet on it - it's a bit like an XR6T - chuck a few tweaks in and you'd be at 300kw... except for the ECU doing some nice simple torque control to protect gearboxes and diffs.

If it's released for motorsport reasons it's a safe bet as it's easier to engineer and access is also improved for the mechanics, the hatch is also a little shorter and lighter.

mmm yeah but i mean the oz release sti is 5.5 secs, jap spec is 4.8 secs. why is mps 0-100 time so average (so to speak) with kw output like that?
wonder what the torque curve is like though in comparison, the sti is rather...unorthodox :? to put it kindly!

i'd rather an rx8 like a friend has...his dad won 4 mil in lotto!! there quicker too by the looks of things..

The evo and the sti are Mazda 3 sized cars. The Mazda 6 would be better compared to a Liberty if you want a true comparison.
There is more to life than 1/4 mile times, when you least expect it life will throw in some corners or a few passengers.

dont mean to be a bitch but..

mazda sp23 sedan - 1232kg
mazda 6 sedan - 1326 to 1354kg

HI-RES
04-10-2004, 07:37 PM
yeah I know what ur saying.. just from articles I'd read the MPS was being targeted at the evo n sti market, which obviously as you've just pointed out is an unweighted comparison. but still the libertys stats are still quicker anyway!
the times just seemed a bit disappointing from what the hype was. i realise i'm sounding very unmazda-stralian so i'll shut up and agree its a wicked car and I probably dont know **** anyway.

Cosmo Dude

At the end of the day the press can say what they want...
If anyone brings an AWD performance car onto the market it will be compared to what's already around. HSV Coupe4 Vs. Evo VIII (http://carpoint.ninemsn.com.au/portal/alias__carpointau/tabID__6485/ArticleID__6557/DesktopDefault.aspx) the comparison is just plain stupid.
As the MPS isn't on the road and for sale yet then I can't see where any journalist worth reading can make a valued judgment or how an editor with any form of editorial dignity can indulge in this sort of crap.

Sorry Bogan Bob but that's just my POV

Quote
Overall, you'll find the MAZDASPEED6 an exquisitely balanced package that combines high performance and sophistication with midsize sedan spaciousness and usability - as well as Mazda's renowned level of value and quality.

Driveability is a BIG concern when selling vehicles, you are comparing it to the STI WRX which is the hardman of the rexy stable, ie made and speced for boys who love to thrash their toys, So you will find hard seats, hard suspension, increased road noise, increased exhaust level, differne clutch etc, the boys don't care cause they love those bits, but old Pappa bear with the desire for a fast car doesn't want the missues complaing about buying a car the goes fast as hell but uncomffy as marble seats in winter.

Where did you get the price stuff, I saw 28-30K must be Yanky but still how to convert and import this figure ??

All cars will be geared differently,
To make a useful car you would want close ratio gears set by what speeds you will actually do, is the car tested made for Autpobahn crusing, ie if I jumped on the Autoban in my BA, I would be floggin it to get to 180, ie in 5th revving at 5-6k continously. Re gear it and I could be 180 in 5th at 4-5k, this will mean slower at the lower end but quicker up top, just depends where you drive the bastard.

Cosmo Dude

Mazda would need a good reason to place the additional investment in 'ready for sale vehicles' and 'spare parts' for us to get the V6.
US = 220,000,000 population
AUS= 20,000,000 population
with much the same land mass and logistics.

Well I saw it today at the motor show and had to give my thoughts to my mate who has actually got his name down for one and he wanted my opinion.
For what it's worth, to me it looked too conservative and lacked that certain wow factor.
Beautifully built but it wouldn't get a cursory look in a car park.
For that sort of money (muted to be) it puts him in the same league as the GT Liberty or nearly an STI.

He felt the same!

Way out of my price range, but I love the car, and would definatly love one, they look like classy, well rounded, pure pleasure to drive kind of a car. Might not be the best performace beast out there, but from what I've read they have pretty darn sweet performance, superbly great handeling and they tuned it so the torque/power curve things will deliver smoothly all the way, great family car too...

and for those that are scratching their heads, it would appear that MAZDA in hirogama, (or what ever it is) translates to Matsuda

its only a rumour so far, but dont be suprised to see a turbo 4wd mazda 3 mps soon. also an rx8 mps. My dad has an rx8 (prviously an mx5 and my astina was his too. also maybe getting a 6 mps for mum if she'll agree to it.) and someone at mazda mentioned it to him. apparently going to become mazdas version of bmw's m division, mercs amg, or, sorry to use it for comparison, but hsv and fpv. Not yet gospel but fingers crossed!!!!!! also there are 2 versions of the 6 mps, one starting at approx 50. Its less luxurious but at 50k who cares.

A while back I saw an interview with a boffin from Mazda who said that MPS is no guarantee of AWD or turbo. MPS Mazdas will be enhanced but that may only be leather interior, body kit, suspension package etc....

Oh yeah,
I should've mentioned. The question the Mazda spokes-person was asked was about the 3 not about the 6 but was rather generic as he also spoke about a Mazda 2 MPS

The MPS will be predominately front wheel drive, the 4WD system is not a constant 4WD system. It was designed this way to keep fuel consumption in mind.

The only time that it engages the 4WD system is when you start to hammer it around corners and drive harder.. And also, if you launch hard it will become 4WD. The transition between FWD and 4WD is seemless, so you won't even know it's engaged itself.

Lamborghini did something like that on the original Diablo but it was predoninantly RWD, the fronts only kicked in 'round corners or when smoke was coming off the rears :D

and if you pull the handbrake on, it stayes in 2wd mode, so you can handbrake it sideways with the front lit up, and when you dump the handbrake the back will spin like hell too. (can you say 4 wheel drift.) Provided you have enough speed/balls. Only mazda would do this, then brag about it! gotta luv it.

Whats the story with delivery peoples, does anyone know the low down cause i have heard 3 different stories about when the cars will be available. One mazda manger told me late this year to early next year, a salesman told me in the next 2 to 3 months and another one said there are already a few driving around sydney and Wheels Magazine has one as prize car so im not sure what they story is with when the car is available.

Cosmo Dude
06-04-2005, 04:49 PM
If Wheels is offering one as a prize then it's a Mazda pre-release promotion. The salesman wants to make a sale so he will have pricing confirmed in the next few months to take your order and the manager is telling you when they will have one on the floor.
It depends on who you ask and what their motivation is as to the answer you get.

Just yesterday I got to drive the new Mazda MPS6. Having never really driven a turbo before like I did yesterday, all I can say about the MPS is that the performance is explosive! The turbo really kicks in at 3000rpm and pulls hard right through the rev range. It probably looses a bit or steam towards redline, however snap the shifter through the gate to engage another gear and you’ll feel that smile peel back further across your face. I drove the MPS slowly away from the showroom with the head salesman with me. As I pulled out onto the main road I accelerated as I would normally in my Astina, and the turbo took me completely by surprise! One thing that I did notice though was that there was a little bit of lag after 3rd if you’re driving it hard. I stomped on it from 2nd to 3rd and there was at least a 1 second delay before you were forced back in your seat as the turbo had finished spooling, the same happened when I finally found top gear.. With a little twitch of my right toe I was “zooming” [quite literally – and excuse the pun!] past other motorists and looming very quickly towards 180km on the freeway before backing off. I walked away from that sexy black MPS6 with a very wide grin.. Possibly wider than when I drove the RX8 last year. The MPS6 has made it onto the short list of cars that I want.. It’s not overly unaffordable either!

The salesman informed me that they would have a registered MPS in the showroom in a few weeks. At this, my mouth salivated. :P

If the Mazda Road show is in your area i would recommend trying to get a drive of the MPS.

I will hopefully be taking one for a spin when I get back from my holidays

having a chat with the salesman at Mazda down the road from work about it and looking at it

He said to me when you have time come down and take it for a spin

Think I'll take him up on that offer when I get back from holidays

Road race, I think the Mazda.
Rally, I'd have my money on the Subaru.
Drags.... Well that's not real racing anyway. :p
