Hi Everyone!

Well the name's Chris as I'm sure you gathered. I've been on the forum for a while but yet to start a project worklog... Bought my 01 SP20 back in September last year, just looking for a nice practical, fuel efficient 4 door after owning a few imports..

I don't have major plans for it as the whole point of getting it was to reduce costs, but I love modifying cars so have a few little things lined up.. Got a little bonus of having king springs in it when I bought it, I think they're super lows judging by the ride height.

Anyway, here are a few pics of how I picked it up:

http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h382/Chris_180/IMG_2419.jpg

Since then I've only done a few little things. I put some clear side indicators on and got some custom number plates. Today, with the assistance of my brother (actually mainly my brother... lol) we fitted an 06 STI front lip to the car and did an oil/filter change.

So here are some pics of how it sits today:

http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h382/Chris_180/IMG_3553.jpg

http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h382/Chris_180/IMG_3554.jpg

Still need to trim the overhang near the tyres but I need to get to the hardware shop and buy a really thin bladed hack saw or something... My kitchen knife didn't cut it today... literally! :D

And please excuse the dirtyness, no point washing a car at the moment with the weather we're getting... The paint isn't in very good nick especially the front bar.. Plan is to give it a proper wash, clay bar and the polish the bejesus out of it and see if it brings it back to life. If not might have to think about respraying it but that'd be way down the track..

Future plans are:

Have a set of 17x8 +35 work meisters which I had resprayed to an awesome gun metal colour going on in the near future. They've been ready for a while just haven't had the cash to pay the spray painters... They'll be wrapped in 205/40/17 Kumho Ku31. Will need to get the rear guards rolled so they can fit, fronts were already done by previous owner. And also have some red Rays wheel nuts to go with them. Should look pretty good, very excited to get them on!

After that I have a set of Autoexe coilovers coming from japan thanks to Rupe!! :)

I'm pretty keen to lamin-X the front fogs now after seeing Smurfy's done.

http://www.lamin-x.com/Mazda-Protege-5-s/512.htm

I'd prob go the gun smoke to contrast with the yellow body work... and match the darkness of the wheels/front lip/projector headlights.

Another exciting future mod is installing Mynameisdaniel's projector retrofit headlights. Just need to get some ballasts and other wiring and they'll be good to go. And when the front bumper is off to install the headlights I've got the bumper fix brackets to go in and I'll prob do the headlight clips at the same time...

So yes, plenty to do in the future, also need to sort out a headunit. Current oem head unit is playing up a little.. goes on strike for a couple of days and then decides to work again for no apparent reason.. It's weird cause the headunit still has power and functions as normal but no sound comes out of the speakers. And then just as mysteriously as it turned off, it magically turns back on.. Anyway, so also on the list is to sort out some decent stereo. Have an Eclipse sub and amp from a previous car to go in as well.

Anyway, looking forward to continuing the mods and learning as I go. Any thoughts throw them up. Hopefully I'll have some pics of the wheels fitted very soon!

Cheers, Chris :D

Like the lip! One of my speakers does this. Put it down to a loose wire, something else on the to-do list.

Very nice! I like how you mounted that lip, looks a lot better than how I had mine mounted :p

Look forward to seeing the front with the new headlights and tinted fogs, it'll look completely different! :D

Thanks mate, and yeah I have no idea what the go is with the stereo issue. When I change it to CD you can hear the CD spin and it counts down on the screen like it's playing just no sound... I'm just going to put up with it until I can afford to get a different head unit. But it usually comes back on in a day or so...

Hahah thanks mate, one thing I learnt from looking at yours and the people that had done it on Mazdas247 was to try and recess it as much as possible.

If I can give people any advice it's to start in the middle and work your way to the sides with the screws. We initially started at the corner edges and tried to line them up but it didn't work and bunched up in the middle..

And yeah def looking forward to getting the lights in there. As you can see I'm going for a bit of a black on yellow theme and the lights will set the front off! Just gotta get organised and get those ballasts! :)

Probably just loose speaker connections in the back of the head unit?

My speaker in the passenger side door cuts in and out when i go over bumps, but if you thump the door it comes back on haha. I'll fix that one day too.

Liking the lip too. You car looks super low indeed! Makes mine look like a truck.

Chris_180
13-02-2012, 09:10 PM
Yeah hopefully just a loose connection but I can't be arsed going back there until I have a new head unit.

And even though I know it won't do anything I bash the sh!t out of it like Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson when they go gorilla on the computer in Zoolander...! :D

And it's not mega low at the moment, I don't have any issues getting around anywhere. In my old cars I'm used to not being able to go certain ways cause I can't get in.. lol I'll hopefully go a little lower, particularly in the rear, once I get the coilovers in there.

sits nicely!
youve seen to fit the lip heaps well, with some you can see gaps, with yours none at all.

Sooooo... Picked up my wheels today!!!!

Really happy with how they came out, the spray painters did a great job! Pics aren't that great, they look heaps better in the sun and they're a bit dusty from sitting at the painters for so long.

They're a nice deep gun metal with a really course metallic through it and a hint of gold pearl. They got new work stickers on them and then cleared coated over the top so they look brand new.

Anywho I'll let the pics do the talking..

I'll be getting the rear guards rolled and tyres fitted tomorrow and possibly installing the camber bolts I got a while back if they're needed. Pics for that tomorrow hopefully! :D

Hehehe thanks, most of the credit goes to my brother...! And I made sure that it sat back as far as we could get it while still following the lines of the front bar. And lot's of screws!!! :) and some times screws in front of screws cause the stock mounting holes through the urethane were set pretty far back so we'd put a screw through that and then a screw in front of that to bring the front up..

Overall pretty happy with, there's a little bunching in the middle but it's underneath so at eye level can't really see it..

dam there gonna look good.. specs on the wheels?

Chris_180
13-02-2012, 10:01 PM
Hehe hope so!

They're 17x8 +35 Work Meisters, weighed them in at about 8kg each on my dodgy home scales... Tyres will be 205/40/17 Kumho KU31 so will have a little bit of stretch. Hopefully they'll sit flush with the guards, or a little out and camber them in.. The stance will be better when the coilovers go in... Hopefully..! :D

Hahah lol thanks for all the comments guys, I spent a fair bit of time researching fitment etc before I took the plunge and it cost me almost the price of the wheels to get them painted but I can't fault how they came out!

Anyway got them fitted today!! Super pumped! As I thought had to roll the rear guards and ended up putting camber bolts in the rear to camber them in a bit. They still scrubbed a bit on hard cornering on the way home and that was with no one in the back.. Other than that I was pleasantly surprised with the stance/ride height, I thought the rear might be a bit high but I'm happy with how it sits.

I'll prob still end up putting the coilovers in, not really lowering it anymore but hoping the stiffer spring rates help reduce the scrubage. If that doesn't work I might have to get the rear guards pumped/flared a little.

So to the pics... Again please excuse the extreme dirtyness of the car..

So yeah really happy with them, looking forward to getting the retrofit headlights and tinting the fogs to complete the black with yellow theme i've got going.. And then stick the coilovers in and maybe lower it just a touch more.. :D

I might have to go 17x8 because thats how my 18x7.5 sit so its not as bad as i thought

Chris_180
14-02-2012, 07:40 PM
It's all in the offset brother! 17x8 is def fine on the good ol Sp20 just gotta make sure it's a conducive offset. And to be honest I probably could've gotten away without the camber bolts in the rear but before them they stuck out a fair bit more. Plus 205 on the 8 inch wide rim also helps a little.

But still very happy :)

Thanks mate, def going to try and perfect the stance with the coilovers and possibly dial out a bit of the rear camber once the stiffer suspension is in...

And you know chicks dig 8"... lol Can't believe I even said that...! hahah :D

Thanks for all the positive comments everyone, very glad you like them! They were a long time coming, I bought these wheels not long after I got the car, only took 6 months to finally get them on...! :)

The only dodgy thing is that these photos (thanks again for the photos Marc... lol) make me realise just how many shades of yellow my car is... The rear bumper is totally different and the whole car goes from a deep yellow from the rear to this washed out bloody pastel yellow at the front...!

That looks **** hot. Perfect stance and fitment.

Lol don't say perfect Rupe, I still need to fit the coilovers... I'm a bit torn about what to do with them.. I'm really happy with the stance at the moment and the ride is very comfortable. I know the coilovers will make it look a bit better and handle better, but I'm not sure if I want to sacrifice the ride..?! Maybe I am getting old... lol

your bumper needs bumper brackets to fix that sag!

Never fear Smurfy, i have the sag fix brackets in the garage but I'm waiting till I get the ballasts sorted out so I can install Daniels retrofit headlights at the same time.

I also wanted to get new headlight clips to fit at the same time but Mazda wanted over $50 for the pair of plastic clips..!

Hahah Daniel! Oh how you're loving the photo shop at the moment! Looks good mate, thanks for the glimpse into the future! Actually it made me realise that I'm prob going to have to tint those side indicators if I want to truly complete this look I'm going for...

And I promise I'll make it happen.... Soon... :)
