So as many of you know I sold my SP20 for a bit of an upgrade.

I got myself a 2007 Subaru Liberty GT Spec B Tuned By STI. It's number 47 out of only 300 ever sold!

Only had it a few days at this stage but I'm unbelievably happy with it! It's a truly beautiful car with a finish quality that is up there with similar age BMWs.

Seems to have plenty of power, although I haven't opened it up properly yet. Lots of features, leather, and of course AWD.

So far all I've done to it is detail it, has come up brilliantly.

It ended up raining tonight and I didn't feel like getting it dirty already so no 'photos' yet, so you'll have to live with these snapshots from my phone for now.

Haha thanks, couldn't be happier with it. It's pretty close, although this one costs more than I like to think about... :p

Ahh yeah forgot plans :)
It has so much there isn't much I need to add, and even less that I want to change. Hopefully in a few months I'll start work on installing a Car PC with 7" touch screen integrated into the dash giving it a nice OEM look. Then get that running through the 14 speaker sound system.

Performance wise I haven't really pushed it but it's going to take a while to get used to the power it currently has so I won't need any more for quite some time.

At the moment I'm just changing some of the interior and exterior lights out for LEDs and hopefully get some minor dents removed next week so she's looking new again. :)

Very nice, my favourite liberty shape too. Now get up here and we can have a AWD Turbo drive through the hills. Its just a short drive to Brissie :p

Wondering how much did it cost you?

Hey there! Nice car man! Love these, they drive so smooth :)

My brother has one of these too... Except white :p
Performance wise, stock... It doesn't put much down to the road... Only put down 100KW at all 4 in full stock form. Which is no where near its potential.
When you do want power, the number one thing to replace is the dump pipe.... The waste gate side is literally completely blocked... If you don't believe me I will take a pic... It's sitting in my shed :p
This creates a huge restriction.
With just an aftermarket dump and a retune on the ecu, it put out 178KW at all 4 peak... But due to stock inter cooler couldn't repeat this figure, so boost got turned down 1.5 psi which then ran 165KW at all 4 consistently.
So if u are after a bit more, you could easily run 180KW at all 4 all day if you did the dump, aftermarket top mount inter cooler and a retune.
even running 165KW it is still enough to step the car out completely sideways in second through a corner :p
Plenty of torque.
Keep us updated on the car,
Enjoy.

Cheers, can't wait to get started, I know once I start modding it I won't be able to stop :)

Thanks, it's a very nice shape, if they released it today I doubt anyone would say it looks old. Haha can't wait to try it through the hills around here, QLD is a little too far though :p

Nice one Dan! Don't you just love silver color cars :P

Yeah, they only released this model in silver and black. Loved the SP20 in silver and I think this one looks pretty nice in silver too :)

A lot ;)

Cheers, it is very smooth in intelligent mode. Switch it to sports sharp and it's so responsive, sadly the bilstein the STI version has is pretty solid so it does take away the smoothness a little, but it's worth it :)

Yeah dump pipe, TBE, FMIC and a tune would be the first things I do for some more power. Although I'd probably do that all at once and that's a long way off :p

Thanks, yeah I love the interior. It's very classy, electric seat, dual climate control. Wouldn't expect it from the aggressive exterior ;)

Yeah I'd do it all at once, best way for sure. I found that on stock tune there is slight hesitation at about 4000. That is basically due to the dump pipe.
If u want I can get more info on the dump my brother used... Pretty sure it was a Phat dump. Is a hand made dump, engine pipe and removes one cat. Extremely nice piece of fabrication. Made by a local engineer near me.
Will get more info on it and prices if u want. Also one of the only dumps that are a True bolt on. All others have fitment issues

Haha yeah, the dump pipe you're talking about is made by a guy who's forum name is Phat_GT on a liberty forum I've been spending some time on. Definitely sounds like it's the way to go. If and when I decide I want more power :)

Manual, I didn't even consider any auto cars ;)

Yep that's the bloke.
Wouldn't even consider any other dump. Perfect welds, thick gauge stainless. Just a top piece of fabrication. Changed the dump in just over an hour, no issues at all. And it has plenty of proven duno results

Haha that I have, and it's definitely worth it. Plus I now have bragging rights as it's nicer than some of my mates' cars which they took out loans for :p

Insurance is pretty bad, a rare performance car driven by a teenager... but I was expecting that :p

Thanks, it's a Canon EOS 500D DSLR. Only got the two kit lenses that came with it at the moment but they seem to be doing fine :)

Pretty easy, you just give someone a lot of money and your dented car, get car back dent free without the money :p

Actually it wasn't too expensive, had one or two dents in every door, plus both guards and the bonnet. They were only very small but now it's perfect :)

If you PM me and I can let you know more about it :)

Thanks, that was actually just a test shot for the reflection while I waited for the guy to get there :p

What is this windows always on wiring mod you speak of?!

It lets me use the windows without having the key in the car. It was actually the first mod I ever did to my SP20 :p
I'm halfway through rewiring my sunroof so I don't need to turn the key all the way to Ign if I forget to close the sunroof, which I do a lot :(

Yeah that's a very similar way to how I did it in my SP20. Unfortunately the Subaru isn't nearly that simple plus I had to work it all out myself.. A very handy mod though :)

Went with a Lilliput 7" 669GL-70NP/C/T-H. I'm doing the opposite, installing the screen first so I can run my iPhone through it for GPS. Just until I can set up a computer in a few months time :)

Yeah got it here on my computer. Haha it's exactly what I expected, nice and bright, the touch screen is resistive so it's different to use than a phone or iPad but that's not really a problem, just different.

Mine was $230 or something, I don't really think that much extra is worth it for capacitive, in my opinion anyway. When you're in a car I can't imagine multi touch being useful, plus I found with my last resistive screen, when you're driving you accidentally touch the screen very lightly a lot while aiming for buttons, might be a problem with capacitive.

Having said that my set up is on a budget so went for the cheapest screen that'll do the job :p

Can't comment on the screen's readability in sunlight yet but hoping to get it in the car in a few weeks.

Yeah, wanted to do it in the SP20 but that meant running more amps where the liberty is a bit easier. It'll have everything, music, radio, TV, GPS, engine management etc...

Not sure if this pic will work or not but it's a pic of the screen mounted in the dash as a test fit.

23-04-2012, 09:25 PM
Cheers, should look right in place once it's all finished.

Umm it's up to you really as to how much you want to spend. $600 will get you a basic screen and computer that will do the job. Then you've got accessories on top of that though.
Or you can go all out and get screens worth $600 on their own, then computers worth well over $1000...

One thing to remember in the Mazdas though is that if you replace the headunit you'll need an amp to power all your speakers which is a bit of work if it's not already done...

I dunno about Dan, I paid about 500 for accessories and laptop, 250 for the screen, plus software if you want to use centrafuse.

Looks good! What happened with all the buttons on the screen?

Whats left to do on it now?

That's brilliant. What software is that? I can see a cable which looks like a belkin iPhone splitter!

Cheers. I decided it looked cleaner with them hidden, so I took apart the button control panel and it now sits behind the screen. I can only use them with the screen pulled out but that should be fine as I should only need them for the inital set up.

I still need to paint the fascia, this was just a test fit, then run all the wiring properly and put everything back together.

At the moment it's just running off my iPhone, so that's the TomTom app being mirrored on screen, and the audio comes through the factory aux in. Doing an exhaust system for the car first then I'll set up a proper computer for it.

Let me know if you find something good. I don't think any of the PC ones available are as good as the TomTom app on my phone by the looks of it...

Bit of an update, had my first track day the other week, awesome fun! Very impressed with how the car went considering it's stock. Enough power and the handling was more than adequate :)

Also finished the screen off (still needs to be touched up). Looks right in place just like I wanted.

Started on the performance mods. So far just a dump pipe, huge improvement over stock! Turbo comes onto boost a lot faster!

Here's a quick vid, planning on keeping the stock mufflers but upsizing the mid section of the exhaust from single 2.25" pipe to twin 2.5" pipes with dual resonators.

What dump are you using??
Did you end up going with the Phat dump?

Found that with the dump and stock tune was a bit jerky at around 3K rpm.
Get an upgraded Intercooler (top mount) and a reflash... Guarantee minimum of 170AWKW runs and Mabey prob more like 180AWKW

Oh... And btw... My brothers one made 115AWKW on stock tune with just the Dump....
That's how big of a difference the tune makes!
Different car... Much smoother and just bucket loads more power.

Yep, managed to get a Phat dump. Might be different with the STI tune? I haven't noticed it it to be jerky, although still getting used to it pulling from 2,000rpm all the way to redline in a few seconds :D

Yeah a nice big intercooler is on the list, waiting for a Perrin one to be redesigned to clear the STI strut brace and I'll probably get that, although it's not very subtle...

May also upgrade the fuel pump depending on the tuners recommendations, but yeah hoping to get a very usable 180kW ATW without changing out the turbo.

Haha nice, I think my model is supposed to have 130-140kW stock atw but obviously depends on the dyno.

Started work on the carputer again. Gathering parts for the computer itself, as well as fixing the fascia to get it perfect this time. Also got the software I need.

Software:
Windows 7 (I'll strip it down to the essentials once it's all running)
Centrafuse Auto 4 with maps as a front end, music player, navigation etc
BlueSoleil for automatically connecting my iPhone to the computer via bluetooth and managing contacts

Hardware:
Motherboard: AsRock H77M-ITX
CPU: Intel Core i3-2100
RAM Patriot G2 Series DDR3 1600MHz 4GB (will only run 2GB if I can get memory usage down enough)
SSD: OCZ Agility 3 60GB SATA 3
Case: M350 if I can't find somewhere to fit the computer without a case
PSU: M2-ATX, still yet to order this
GPS: Nokia LD 3W (to be upgraded later)
Bluetooth USB adapter
ELM327 OBDII USB cable
Cables: HDMI, lots of USB extension cables, various 3.5mm cables etc...

I'm tempted to run radio through the computer instead of using the headunit as that way whatever is playing will automatically mute when I make or receive a phone call or use voice control. Opposed to me having to reach all the way to the AUX button on the headunit (or press the steering wheel control) :P

Here's a pic of what the front end will look like, nice big buttons to press and hopefully a very smooth interface with the i3. I've also modified Windows 7 a little to remove most microsoft/windows branding so now the interface has Subaru logos and tbSTi logos/wallpaper :D

Also fitted a reversing camera which automatically switches, need to rewire it a bit as there's a 2-3 second delay before I get picture after changing to reverse. It's very well hidden, you can see it in this photo (just) and that was the angle it was most noticeable from :)
