Did you go for the off the shelf spring rates with the yellow speed coils...?? What's the ride quality like and does the damper adjustment actually make a difference...?? Only ask cause coilovers are one my to do list again...

Yea off the shelf spring rates, you can get custom spring rates but would cost a bit more, Took it for a drive today after got the height just right, Car is sitting 110mm from ground to lowest part of my car (exhaust). Little bit of rubbing, my steering wheel is way out, nothing a wheel alignment can fix.

But over all the handling is much better, no more boat handling round roundabouts lol, damper does make a difference, recomended damper was 12 clicks in the front and 8 clicks in the back, I went 12 in front and 10 in back wich did make a difference, the only thing that was preset was the springs, everything else I had to adjust.

Realy pleased with the coilovers, need to get a wheel alignment and put my boot back together then it will be sweet :)

Heres some Pics, first 3 taken with my 4 year old iPhone 3g :P

Yeah I like the ride height where it is, I just wanted to get rid of the big gap between the wheel well and the wheel, Originaly got the car with those tail lights on the car, will maybe find some stock ones down the track and put on it :)

what offset are your wheels? it looks a little close to the wheel arches... they might rub
you should add a rear strut bar.... makes a huge difference!

I would recommend on getting a 22mm progress rear sway bar as your next mod.

or a complete mazdaspeed sway bar kit
still available in the US! good price considering what's in the kit!

They are standard CX7 wheels so 18 X 7.5 +50, havent got a wheel alignment done on it yet, so hopefuly with some camber it wont rub, if it does will have to get guards rolled, will prob look into a rear strut bar but yea im happy with how it is now

it's good it's only +50... with that wide of wheel/tyre, going to +45 will mean it will rub for sure

IMO, the wheels are too big and too heavy for the car... but to each his own :)

maybe american culture is slightly different (oh wait, ive seen the 50" rims on truck videos...) in that everyone doesnt mod their car for fast, but impractical looks ;)

Hahaha so true... Don't forget the lexani Million dollar diamond rims ;)
I was looking for something that looked the goods, but wasn't outrageous with size weight and fitment. And didn't compromise performance too much.
Hence why I chose the wheels I did.
Basically same specs as the cx7 rims.
I find that it does track a little worse with the wider tyres, but front end traction was increased a fair bit, especially when keeping the foot hard in it through the middle of some small chicanes.
But, looks come with a price with the definate loss of ride comfort and a touch of bouncyness of the 35series. :p
I guess 17" is optimal compromise but damn I just love my 18's
Worth it if it's the look you are after.

Not as though these cars were exactly designed to go fast anyway :p
(if it was it wouldn't have tiny brakes that are way to thin lol)

P.s. nice little tidy car u have there hammo, saw it at the jdmst meet.
Definate +1 for changing back to stock tail lights (01 lights tht is.. Don't like the later model ones)
You definitely lost that 4WD factor with the coilies :p

BG1.8sp
10-04-2012, 08:10 PM
Oh.... One more thing... BLACK your headlights!
Would look so much nicer with the black rims
Taking a closer look....Mabey leave the tail lights, black the inserts on your headlights, take off the plastic strips on the doors and the stickers, then black badging on the rear and a black auto exe grill (with mazda speed Basel like the cool kids :p)
And that would be one clean sexy SP.

or replace the door mouldings with the colour matching ones... nicer looking without compromising car park protection ;)

I'm amazed most of the BJs in oz didn't get colour matching door mouldings, while we here in the US did

BG1.8sp
10-04-2012, 08:38 PM
I don't know about "most ones in oz"
I have never seen one that was factory fitted with coded ones yet :p

I personally prefer none. But if u are paranoid then paint them.
But then again if you are paranoid you would already be doing what I do and park as far away from other people as possible or get your missus to drive her car to the shops :p

I personaly like the side mouldings, keeps it looking like a realy tall door on a small car, working for Mercedes I see long and tall doors everyday, gets quite dull but thats me personaly. I like to see lines not just a plain panell

Mines colour coded ;) haha

I'd personally leave them on... the black-ness of them matches the wheels. Contrasts nicely on the blue.

the lines are still there once you take off the mouldings, that's why lots of people do it, and that's why mazda did it with the mazdaspeed versions of the BJs :) there is a small "step" on the door panel right where the moulding goes... so that's why it still looks good once you take the mouldings off ;)

on the 3, the door panels are just all flat... so taking off the door mouldings just makes it look dull/plain

for me, I wouldn't do it because of car park damages... mine (which are painted from the factory :D) has seen its fair share of bumps... they have protected my doors a lot!

how does this vinyl stuff work? dead set that looks perfect!

Hammo
20-04-2012, 11:04 PM
Basicly I cut a big rectangle piece out and stretched, pressed and used a heat gun around the corners and more complex shapes used a small razor blade to trim off the excess and to make the holes for ac vents cd player etc, the trick is for those is to use the heat gun and press the vinyl through with out stretching it then cut like cross patterns not to close to the edges and fold the rest in and then trim the excess off

theres heaps of videos on youtube, just look up carbon fibre vinyl, thats how i lernt how to do it

Stereo shroud 1.2 Hours since I hadn't done it before, Round the gear stick and cup holder lid bout half hour (take out, wrap, put back in,) A pillars took 30 seconds to take out (open door, peel off rubber seal from A pillar area, can use fingers to pull off so start from top and work way down, once down bottom just pull it up and out it comes) and about 20 mins each to wrap.

Looking good interior ;)

Thanks :)

Front sway bar is a massive pita to swap...
Rear sway bar most definitely DO IT!
Go buy a front strut brace and rear strut brace over the front sway bar tbh.
And/or do the bushes.

And to CF wrap the bonnett V you will put a slight thin score through your paint, as the wrap has to be cut on the car.

Tiny Update... Got some black headlights from Q2CDIS yesterday before I went to MotorEx, will be giving the lense's a good clean up and then fitting them soon :D

Also while at MotorEx i spent a bit of time at the 3M stand getting tips from a guy who was doing a live demo of some CF vinyl wraping on a Supra cluster shroud, gave me some tips on how to do the bonnet V in vinyl cant wait to do it :D

Hammo
16-09-2012, 10:11 AM
So time for an update...

Well after getting some blacked out headlights from Q2CDIS ive had to fix up the lenses on both lights only to find that the left one was leaking water, so I pulled it apart and fixed it. I then had to find a place which could plastic weld the broken tab on the right headlight back on, got that fixed for a small fee of $55. Have adjusted the headlights, whilst adjusting I found that there were some small crows feet like cracks but square on the inside of the left lens but they are only visible when its dark and the lights are on so these headlights from Q2CDIS might be temporary, if I decide to to a projector conversion on my original headlights.

I have autoexe copy front grill from ebay and a lower front grille waiting for me at a Mazda dealership close to work, Mazda themselves have stuffed up when getting the part so i have to wait abit, good thing with it though I get a discount on top of trade price :). Its $64 retail and $54 trade. The plan with those is to try and do what Orion done with his which looks really sweet, and wrap the grill in CF vinyl to match the eyelids, better to hack up a copy grill then a genuine one i think.

I have also booked my car in to get the front and rear bumpers fixed and fully resprayed so hopefully after that ill be getting my suby lip and putting that on the front.

Bought some JDM tail lights + Autoexe covers from rupe, waiting for them to come, will be putting them on since my taillights have decide to collect water and grow a small forest of moss which looks yuckk...

Sometime soon I would like to get a rear sway bar, upgrade the front strut bar and get a rear strut bar.

5 PM theres a couple of imperfections in the paint but am going back to get them touched up.

Some how they put my aac bumper "sag" brackets on backwards so will be fixing them up on the weekend along with putting my new strut braces on :D:D:D

I managed to take some before pics of the bumpers, before it went to paint, and took some after pics when i got the car home

So spent the weekend putting in my new Corksport Strut bars

Front bar was easy as pie, and the rear bar was such a pain in the a** that it made up for it when i took the car for a drive around some twisties to test it out.

Wasn't the cleanest install of the rear bar but its in and doing its job.
Had to modify the seat belt holder bracket that goes ontop of the rear struts.

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s67/Rambo_002/Facebook/The%20MAZDA%20aka%20car%204/bracket3.jpg

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s67/Rambo_002/Facebook/The%20MAZDA%20aka%20car%204/bracket1.jpg

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s67/Rambo_002/Facebook/The%20MAZDA%20aka%20car%204/bracket2.jpg

There was no room to do the nut up closest to where you bolt the bar to the bracket so I modified the nut to fit. Still no room to do the nut up with a
socket so had to do it up with a spanner and pole through the ring side of spanner and make it like a T piece, nut was tight and all good.

It wasn't a perfect install but its in now, yea took it for a drive round town going through all the roundabouts,
still some body roll in the rear, but it fells so much better now that there is actually some support there.

Rear sway bar will eliminate whatever body roll is left

yea man its pretty ridiculous, mate of mine a while back took his tidy vl for a drive to the foreshore in newy,
come back with 3 defects, wheels too big, washer bottle empty and aftermarket seats,
best part of the story he bought the vl from a cop..... so figure that one out lol

Thursday nights in the foreshore are a no go guaranteed a defect and a trip to the pits....

ive been through a few rbt's and nothing yet, im sitting 110mm from the ground and have over-sized wheels so you would suspect something but so far so good.

HAIGHIE
30-10-2012, 10:36 PM
but your only +2 in sizes it's legal the toyo website has a full like info page on it,

man that sucks so were do people go and chill out with cars? we all go down the harbour and chill there if everyones being good ya won't see a cop, but then someone will do a skid and then you'll have a cop car come threw, and if it keeps happening they'll just kick us out never had anyone defected down there

Hammo
30-10-2012, 10:47 PM
think state law is +1 -1 wheel size

usually its the foreshore in town or kooragang island, people been going to kooragang for over 30 years
(there was even a old movie filmed there with an old crhysler charger) with old muscle cars toranas falcons etc...
burnouts drags u name it its been done. now cops swarm the place whenever a bunch of people begin to do stupid crap down there

it has eventualy come to this

Yeah ive heard that too, make sure that water is full =] haha,
Im tossing up between 17" Sp-23 rims or yours.. either way they are going Blaaaaaaaaack
Mate in the RTA told me the cops were going to be in the foreshore last thursday, and apparently the thursday before, 22 cars were taken to the pits and only 2 weren't defected...
He said half the defects weren't even for mods though, but for things like dodgy brakes etc!!!
BTW, what kinda drop you got on those coilovers?

Hammo
31-10-2012, 06:12 AM
It's drop quite a bit so far can probably go another 1.5-2 inches if I wanted but I'd scrub like hell

Your allowed to go 2" bigger in rim size as long as you keep the same rolling diameter. If rolling diameter changes you must get your speedo Re calibrated and engineered. And pretty sure it was a 1.5" increase in width.
Then there is also another limit on increasing your track.
But yeah... Every time I get pulled over I get told how lucky I am by the police (I am the boarder line for all of those). I simply reply... It's not luck... I actually read the rules before installing them.

^^ the cops love that and usually thank me for keeping within the regulations and become all nice. Then usually comment in how well the rims sit :p

My brothers 300 has 18" rims that are 9" wide with 45 series tyres. (Speedo Recalibrated) It's currently at 80mm ride height. And a hugeeeee suspension mod list.
So that has a 2page engineers slip :p

On your colour blue 100% colour match, would look much nicer than black.
And black grille = millions of stone chips (I know lol)

That's an Autoexe replica... Again... Wouldn't bother getting a grille unless its a genuine autoexe or ecarboy. Just asking for problems with the cheap copies.

So opened the boxes and seen my JDM tail lights with autoexe covers on them, no white powder in there lol.... Big thanks to Rupe for getting them for me :)

Just wish the covers weren't already stuck on but oh well... Challenge accepted, will be wrapping the covers in CF Vinyl and putting Gunsmoke Lamin-x on the lights.. Its going to look MAAAADD!!

Had a go tonight but I ripped it stretched it too much, was like screw this ill try again tomorrow.
Cant believe how fast this latest roll of vinyl has gone will probably have to get another one for my front lip now...

Hey, do you know if you can get that Lamin-X for the Protege tail lights because I couldn't find it on their website..., only for the P5

You can get universal sheets of it http://www.lamin-x.com/Universal-Sheets-s/289.htm

Ah, and do you heat it to apply it? I have left over CF Vinyl here that I don't think I'll be using. Not 100% sure on size but i have a feeling its about 1500 x 500?... ish, might do a lip. I'll measure it tomorrow night if you're interested

Hammo
21-11-2012, 10:18 PM
Wetting the surface your putting it on is best, have tried dry wouldn't wok like that for me.

Im good on vinyl for now. Definitely got more then enough to finish the tail lights.

giba
21-11-2012, 10:26 PM
ok, so kinda allows you to move it in position while its wet. Do you just stretch it out over the curves? I want to do it but dont think ill risk it because i didn't go well with the vinyl, hence the leftover =P

Hammo
21-11-2012, 10:32 PM
sorry man thought you were talking bout lamin-x

Lamin-x: clean surface > wet surface > apply

Vinyl: Clean surface, can use heat to apply, don't stretch it too much. just gotta work it, takes practice.

Hammo
22-11-2012, 08:28 PM
ALL DONE!!! :D

Finally figured out a way where it wouldn't rip. I Kept tucking in on the inside of the cover and just kept ripping, so i decided to stretch
the whole sheet over it and not tuck it in, I then cut the excess off around the outside of the tail lights, then worked my way back on
the inside of the covers making sure I had plenty of meat on the vinyl when I cut it so I could then tuck it in and trim any excess off.

Anyway the end result, will fit them tomorrow arvo when I get home from work :D

Annnnnnnddddddd Theyre ON!!!

So while i was putting them on I noticed that my old tail lights had 3 holes in them for brake, indicator and reverse, and my new ones have 4 holes, brake, indicator, reverse and probably fog on the bottom.

I had a look at my harness and it looks like it has had the old snip before probably removing the connectors etc for the original lights can anyone confirm that there are 4 plugs on a standard harness?
My brake light globe has 2 filaments in it one for brake and one for parker. By the looks like it I dont have a rear fog light.

Already had this discussion with bikingpro.
No fog lights in JDM tails.
Top is brake/Parker
Bottom is Parker. Then reverse and blinkers like normal.

So only difference is the added Parker only light at the bottom.

Lights look good man. Going to have to break them so I am the only one with them :p

Aww darn it, thought there would have been a light in there but oh well, another problem i have with them is the light sockets
dont lock in there at they are a bit smaller so i have them being held in with duct tape so they dont fall out and also keep any moisture out :p

HAIGHIE
23-11-2012, 07:57 PM
you'll have to get the BJ1 wiring harness for them.
with the bay15 globes, i'm assuming yours are the T20 wedge globes, and then just splice in to the top parker globe and get another socket and wire in a parker for the bottem section like i did:)

Hammo
23-11-2012, 08:04 PM
where would I find said harness lol

maybe mazda, or a wreckers ya think or perhaps rupe

HAIGHIE
23-11-2012, 08:44 PM
mazda for sure don't know how much it would be and then if not a wrecker will have it for sure, and the it just unplugs right before all the wires split up to go to each globe so easy as:)

BG1.8sp
23-11-2012, 08:57 PM
The JDM tails are Identical to the stock sp20 ones. Only difference is that there is an extra globe on each paralleled to the top lights.

Does yours have the provisions for fitting a globe into the bottom hammo??

Hammo
23-11-2012, 09:10 PM
Mine are like these ones but my harness only has 3 lights on it instead of 4

So mine goes like this

Brake/Parker
Reverse on inside/ Indicator on outside
Empty.

BG1.8sp

But is there a provision there in the tail light to fit a bottom globe??
Like is there a globe holder in the bottom?
Or is it sealed like the original sp20 ones?

Hammo
23-11-2012, 09:20 PM
Nah its not sealed you can definitely put a globe in there ive currently got it covered with duct tape
to prevent moisture getting in, but my harness isn't like the one above, would be nice to make the bottom part my parkers

BG1.8sp
23-11-2012, 09:24 PM

Well doubt you would be able to just buy the JDM harness from the auctions or Mazda. So you are just going to have to modify the existing harness. (Splice)
Should just run a Dual filament globe in the bottom as well, and jut get the globe holder out of a wreck from the top light.

Hammo
23-11-2012, 09:40 PM
could i get another socket put single filament bulbs in the top and bottom socket and then take the positive wire
for the parker lamp and then connect it to the new socket on the bottom and just earth it to the chassis?

BG1.8sp
23-11-2012, 09:53 PM
Wouldn't recommend earthing to the chassis for your negative. Asking for issues lanter on.
You are already splicing the positive for the Parker... Why not just splice the Negative for the Parker too and do it properly. Lol
Spend 5 mins longer now and potentially (little pun for Ryan ;) ) save yourself pulling them out later. Earthing to the body would be ok. But for small CSA conductors with a tiny contact area to the body. I don't like doing it. Likely to break... And turns into an absolutely rubbish earth after 12months lol.

So yeh, just wire it up properly and hae a neat and tidy harness.

Hence why I said to use the dual filament on the bottom globe!

Can get the socket from the top socket of any BJ and will fit into the bottom.

Then just wire it in. Would be nicer IMO with dual filaments top and bottom anyway.

yer i just ran a double filament uni fit socket for mine and then spliced in to the top parker positive and neg and just left the brake wire blank if that makes sence so wired everything up except for the brake light power so it just just becomes a single filament globe but only run the parker power supply to it, other wise if you run a single filament globe it'll be as bright as the brake light globe all the time;)

Soooo had my work xmas party last night, that went all fine and dandy workmate was smashed pole dancing and spewing will be fun on monday, but it was on the drive home I was razzing my car hitting rev limiter and then all of a sudden I loose power the car is misfiring really bad was really ****ting bricks since i had 40k's to get home, Babied it home pheww no engine light on.

Anyway decided to take a look at it this morning though it was coil's since some people have had issues with coils latley but it wasnt, took the plugs out had a look and found my problem, the piston has actually hit the spark plug well at least i think it did, either that or its got really hot gone soft and the compression has pushed it up, so was off to supercheap bought 4 new plugs, new oil filter and some 20w 50. Was good as new no more missfire, lesson learnt wont be razzing the heck out of it now

Soo been fiddling around with the car on the weekend, fitted correct size sockets and new bulbs in my tail lights,
will be adding a extra light down the bottom soon, took apart all of the boot again filled the rear quarter panels with
foam I got from work for doing a couple of steering racks, was going to do an oil change today but started to rain :(

While the bonnet was up I had a look around made sure nothing was leaking, all fluids were right etc, then noticed that
one of my engine mounts has a split and is almost completely broken :( so put in an order at Protege Garage
bought a new set of AWR Engine mounts 70 Duro hopefully should be here before it brakes completley

I just noticed your spark plugs being smashed... it's not from pistons hitting the spark plugs... THINK mate! if the pistons hit the spark plugs, that would be the least of your worries... you'd be looking at a new piston and new valves then!

the cause of the damage was from a broken VICS screw
you need to find out where the screw went or if it's still in bouncing around on top of the piston

then there's 4 fixes you can do:
1) replace upper intake manifold with good 2nd hand one, then replacing all screws with brand new ones from mazda using recall kit part # FSY2-13-SRZ
2) replace upper intake manifold with brand new one from mazda under specially reduced price recall part # FSY4-13-SRY
3) remove VICS completely and fill the holes... reduces low speed engine performance and lose fuel efficiency
4) find and install FS-ZE intake manifold which has a better VICS butterfly design... screws will not likely fall out due to the better VICS design... improved performance at low and high RPM extremes... the cheap inferior design of the FS-DE VICS butterflies is why the screws fall out, especially after much high RPM engine use

Hammo

Im thinking that the spark plug had pre detonated and when it come to the compression stroke it bent the plug,
car has been running fine ever since i put new plugs in it, but ive got a bore scope here will take the plugs out and check anyway if there
is a screw floating around, i highly doubt it but never know

Im thinking that the spark plug had pre detonated and when it come to the compression stroke it bent the plug,
car has been running fine ever since i put new plugs in it, but ive got a bore scope here will take the plugs out and check anyway if there
is a screw floating around, i highly doubt it but never know

you still need to remove the intake manifold and inspect for missing screws/damaged butterflies... if you see that, then the manifold must be replaced, it cannot be repaired save for completely removing VICS.... the damage will continue/get worse!

this is a common problem with the J48, that's why mazda recalled these cars!

I meant the parts market for the protege in the US.

Ive owned a Holden before, an old 1980 TE Gemini on p plates at the time, was a good car was 29 years old when i owned it
all original paint was faded and few rust spots showing only had 110,000ks on it too, spent quite a bit keeping that thing on
the road. A Holden these days isnt like a Holden back in the day.

And thanks man plenty more work on the Mazda to come :)

My first car was a HJ kingy, second, third, fourth were UC toranas. Loved the 202, eventually got a triple dellorto setup that kicked every local cars ar**! I remember going into repco to order a set of filters for the carbs and ol' mate said 'i thought it was a turbo!?' Had recently blew him away in his VL turbo. He made me pop the bonnet to see for himself!!!

I meant mazda 3 sales have taken over commodore sales! Got a soft spot for old holdens still...sorry for filling your build thread with my memories!

it should be easier on a RHD car I think... the bulkhead is different and the wire loom runs a little differently, thus I don't think there will be that stud that gets in the way of the rear mount

however, on a LHD car, it is best to lower the crossmember slightly so that the nuts are more accessible :)

Fitted my AWR engine mounts today, found the drivers and front mount broke, the rear mount beginning to split
and the transmission mount was found to be the best not showing any signs of ware or tear.
Only issue with fitting the mounts was lining up the hole for the long bolt on the rear mount, took a while but eventually got it.

So as many of you know a few of us went to QLD to meet some fellow members up there, we havent been across the border long,
when we come to a part of the highway where some of it had been dug out leaving a raised section for people too hit,
unfortunately I hit that raised section resulting in the following, I thought it had put my wheel alignment out but i was wrong.
It had damaged my right hand side tyres, we are so lucky they didn't blow while we were razzing through some national parks.
