View Full Version : Converting drums to discs

Hey guys,

I was just wondering, how would I go about converting the drums on my car to discs? I've seen a few guides but they have been for like old school Ford's (Falcons etc.) but I have no clue where to start on mine haha. I'm pretty keen to do a 5 stud conversion in the future... if only I could just swap my hubs over...

Does anyone have any suggestions/tips/?

Cheers,
Nick

Ahh! I knew there was something somewhere! Thanks man! :)

And thanks to Ed too for all the information on protegefaq!

EDIT: I think I'll be better off sticking to 4-lug haha, seems like heaps of work (and money in parts) to do, and I think it's just not worth it as quoted:

however the initial stopping power from 4 disc cars perform less than the rear drum ones!

Maybe a project for me in the distant future, but it looks like front discs and rear drums for me for now!

323 Protege/Astinas that are 1.8 have discs front and rear.

Just nab that stuff of a wrecked car.

Could do that, next time a 1.8 pops up at the wreckers I'll be snapping it up! All the ones ive seen at the wreckers are 1.6's and SP20's...

...Friggin SA :(

I thought one was thicker than the other. Idk that's what Phil said. Same calipers I'd assume too?

same front 258x24mm size,
one has a 54.1mm centre hole, the other 72mm.
one has 4x100 pcd, the other has 5x114.3.
one is 47mm width, the other is 48.5mm.

so only slight difference in hat offset.

the I4 rears are 0.5mm thicker according to dba, but that might be a typo. everything else is the same except center hole and pcd.

Some say drums are better than discs!!!???

there is a reason why motorsport teams moved away from drums and onto discs in the 1950s.

There are many reasons :)

Find a crashed SP20 and nab the brakes off it. Astina parts aren't in demand so they should be reasonably priced. Anyone known if the master cyl & prop valve are the same? If not you'll need those too.

bj2 has 15/16 master cylinder bore.

Can also use a 929 master cylinder :)
