My local Ampol shut down today... I don't know where to get my PULP now .. optimax is crap and BP is too expensive ... damn damn ...

Most of the petrol companie except shell get their fuel from BP anyways so yeah I guess this whole boycott thing won't work but hey doesn't hurt to try ???[/color:post_uid0]

Hey Olympic,

Did you see that story [Today Tonight] on independant petrol stations who put high levels of ethonal into the mix?? There's been some bad cases of this and many customers of these petrol stations have had their cars rooted as a result from using this petrol. Of course they did tests using Shell, BP, and other chain brands but they came back clean.

Hey Supergirl,

Optimax is crap?? Tell us why you think this? I'd be interested to know as optimax is all I ever use as it's the best petrol i've used.

Cheers

I just go down the local Caltex (used to be Ampol). They're normally pretty good. It seems their prices don't fluctuate as much as others. This means they may be more expensive at times, but at others, they don't raise it quite so soon. Just have to be lucky. As for independants, I generally don't go near them, after seeing many stories about ethanol and other solvents, f*@k that. At least this way, I have somebody to sue if I find out too much ethanol has caused my engine to go bung...

Oh, speaking of which, got to uni today, and there's a river of coolant coming out the overflow bottle! Pissed off, just driven up to newcastle, and no sooner I get there, then there's this f*@king coolant leak. Temp was OK, hoses OK, fan was OK. Got the NRMA for a second opinion, drove it back to Gosford (watching the temp), and the mechanic said it could be a radiator cap (he did check for CO/CO2). New radiator cap, and hasn't leaked yet, but neither have I driven it quite as far as newcatle<==>gosford. We'll see tommorrow morning. Got everything crossed...[/color:post_uid0]

Hey guys,

I suppose its more of a personal reason just used it once (in the barina maybe that explains it) and it seemed to make the car run a bit rough so was a bit worried about putting in the beast. It only runs on PULP - no normal - so yeah costs me a bit. So you guys haven't had any problems with optimax??? Cos if not I might give it a go...

thanx

My car runs fine on Optimax, its the only fuel that hasnt made it ping, pretty much :)[/color:post_uid0]

Bear in mind too that the ultimate effects of optimax will set in after you've run a few tanks of it through the engine. Although you'll see and immediate gain like I did, it'll get better once the normal stuff is completely out of the system.

Hey there all,
* * * * * * * * There have been some consistency problems with
Optimax over the last year. *Its still good stuff just not as
high octane and its sposed to be. *All the additives are there
so its good for the car just not as much bang for your buck.
I have been using the Mobil 8000 and Caltex and have found
them OK. *Overall all of them seem to be down a bit cause my
boost cut shifts up with higher octane fuel but in the last 6
months has never been where it was when I first started using
Optimax.
* * * * Getting back on topic considering all the fuel for
Sydney comes from Shell Kurnell and then goes out to Mobil,
Caltex or BP etc for them to add their own additives not sure
how this will really have the desired effect. *Even if the crude
came from BP by buying from another servo wont give the
desired result as you are still buying the same amount of
crude from the big multi national just through a different
outlet.
* * * * *Finally I only buy my fuel from a distubutor outlet
like a BP or a Mobil never an independant as you know that
fuel tampering is going on and whether its the servo or the
independant fuel supplier who sells the servo its happening
so I stear well clear of all of them.

Caltex or Shell for me usually. Prefer caltex as they use no ethanol and all their stations are supplied by caltex and not whoever is cheaper at the time like the local independant.[/color:post_uid0]

Hey guys

A guy at work told me that he finds Optimax makes his car ping .. anyone else find that problem and also that Optimax had a 7c difference compared to the usual 5c difference between ULP and PULP .. anyone else find this?

thanx
me[/color:post_uid0]

Nope, car doesn't ping. Maybe he's advanced his timing too far!! :O Or it needs a tune/service..... What sort of car is it?

For the other guys out there, could this also happen if the car is Carby instead of fuel injected?

Adam[/color:post_uid0]

BigMal
07-03-2003, 06:31 AM
Ping has nothing to do with injected over carby.
My mates ZC fairlane pings its head off on ULP being
an ex super petrol car so he spews a bit cause he runs
Optimax or equiv and also the additive for leaded cars
so driving around is pretty expensive for him.
