View Full Version : Gearbox for BA to BPD Conversion

Hi all
I own a 1.6 '96 BA Astina/Lantis and finally got myself a GTR (BPD 210hp) half-cut to do a conversion.
I've heard that upgrading to so much more power with a GTR engine (~100hp to 210hp!) will probably screw my gearbox.
The GTR half-cut includes a 4WD gearbox. Does anyone know if the gears with LSD can be transplanted, or is there any other solution? I don't know what other gearbox can fit?
Cheers

The GTR box is a G25MX-R
G2 = Box type
5 = 5 speed
M = Manual
X = 4 wheel drive
R = Remote control
I believe the Viscus coupling is front to rear not left to right and as such won't fit in the FWD casing.
You would need the G25M-R to be compatable to the insides of the G25MX-R and at a guess you have the F25M-R. Stay with the gerbox you have for now as it has the correct axles and accessories.
ur car is a 323F 1.6. we dont get the 1.6 in aus, i have no idea what the gearbox is like compared to the 1.8s, but i'd say be careful with the bpd on that box.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to check what model my gearbox is, although I don't think it's remote ie. uses actual levers connected to the stick.
There doesn't seem to be much choice for me but to continue using my current box. A freind said NOT to use a racing clutch as it would really screw the gearbox, but to get a street clutch (preferably kevlar?) instead. Thoughts?
Crazy thought, has anyone ever managed to convert the 323F 1.6 into 4WD??!

It could be done but the cross member under the steering rack and fuel tank would need to be custom modified before thinking about before putting a diff in the rear.
Hope you have a bottomless draw full of cash
Most use a full plate organic clutch in hope of the clutch slipping before the box going.
Only a bandaid solution really.

A 1.6BA, what is your general location?

Singapore. Ain't too far off from Australia.
Jynx, you're right about the bandaid solution. Any idea what the ideal solution is?
There is no ideal solution at the moment. The two most popular ideas thrown around the circles focus on the diff and the main bearing.
Check the end of this thread for some discussion along those lines.

hi guys,
i have a ba 323f '96,comes with the 1.6l dohc and f series gearbox
im now doing a bpze swap with haltech e6x,850 injectors,low comp. pistons,t3/t04e garrett turbo,tail w/gate,act clutch,etc etc.
i also just finished converting a awd gearbox from a 95 gtx that has a bpt engine to fwd by doing this:
tear the awd box appart,take the transfershaft that gets driven by the ring gear out(this awd box is a lsd one or viscious??),
then take out the whole rear diff(case with ring&pinion that goes to the rear shaft),
i took a electric saw and cut off the whole casing that holds the rear diff,
only thing left to do is to weld the hole close that connects the transfershat to the rear diff.since they each use their own gearoil,and that you dont have to fill up like 6 quarts of gearoil!!
hope you guys get the picture of what i did,since i forgot to make pics while doing all of this
the converted awd to fwd is allready in the car but i havent driven it yet,since im still in the process of the swap
give your opinion!

the best solution for both of you is to get the G series 28 spline box and shafts that the BA 1.8 dohc comes with , and then get the MS protege LSD unit from america for around 800 AU. u weld a couple of bits to it to toughen it up , (do a search on the MS protege LSD).
its uses the stock shafts and all and would take a beating.
after that a custom 3rd gear might help if it blows.....the stock one will last ages depends how u drive.
also use a stock oranic BPT/D clutch ONLY. with a heavier pressure plate around 1900lb. wont slip and feels like stock.

that sounds close to it
I've actually been in the well- hwo would you say, DO you think this would work. I got asked by a friend with a laser 89 the B6 type engine
well with worked Bp's in them. the 4WD system was as you woudl know going. I helped out on a project car it was a 4WD Tx-3 but N/A yeah wierd ?
this became as first with my suggestion of less stress FWD with FWD box it blew but we took out the rear transfer and weld here and there and cut and it was FWD only. For some months untill the front diff blew. At the same time. The other car picked up a GT-R rear diff and box plus a GT-R turbo. etc etc. BLah blah
evenutally all left overs were for the hack of a Tx-3.
Pulled it apart and one day - I was without a car I got pickup and told figure it out. in the end, the appentice merchinics and me, came up with Front diff gone no drive weld plates, lock the transfer diff which I have feeling we didn't need to anyway? but I know we just made some plates to fit inthe Cv holes - we still silcon them up when they leak but it's been RWd for last oh years. I don't see the guys much, as I know one don't care for lasers anymore, works on big V8's now and his own. THe other quit monkey work and talks crap to customers for a dealer who talks more show charges like hell and he smashs the nice new cars around. yeah nice dealer demonstrator - Well run in.
But that laser the RWD ones get's smashed at least once a week. Still runing a B6, stock - over 220,000k's last I saw, hiflowed BP turbo I think and mx-6/626 cooler. oh and a age old chip upgrade done by croydon autosports back in late 90's for a boost stock turbo with cooler. you wont' notice it stock Tx-3 rims only 1inch or 1.5inch lowered - nothing by otdays standards in blue, yellow plates, red pin striping falling off., faded plastic. But if oyu see a TX-3 in the Haberfeild area going a little sideways that's it.
If those clowns can do it anyone can.
They used a workshop manual from there work ( at time ford) it's all they needed.
