As you guys may be aware, i've been seriously considering an SP20, or a normal Astina if SP20 was out of reach.
The search has come to a grinding halt, when i investigated insurance,
$4500 for SP20, NRMA
$3700 for astina NRMA
regardless of whether i am a co-owner with my father, or if he is the "owner" and i am a driver.
$4100 from Justcar.
this is largely due to my driving history, not all of which is my fault, but i have to live with it, no NCB. Also due to teh fact i'm under 25.
wondering what you guys are paying, and where you may suggest i try to look for cheeep insurance.
keeping in mind i have lowering, wheels and exhaust in mind for mods.[/color:post_uid13]

FOOOK!
Those are shocking quotes. I (a 20yo) can get a new model Turbo MX-5 insured for cheaper than that.
My current Astina is costing me $1200/year fully comprehensive. Have you tried looking at TPF&T only?[/color:post_uid0]
Bob,
That must be some driving history! I have 2002 astina sp20, dark tints, and it's comp insured $1235.
NRMA are ****kickers... try more companies.. GIO, smaller ones...what bout those modified car ones in sydney? cools or something like that?
keep looking, 4k is ridiculous for an astina.
Cheers

Hey guys,
Well at the moment I live in NSW and NRMA are charging me a premium of around $1400 and that's with a 50-60% [can't remember exactly] NCB.
However, when I move to Ballarat at the end of November AAMI are going to charge me a cool 500 odd dollars! I nearly fell off my chair backwards when i heard the vast difference! Amazed is all i can say. Apparently Just Cars insurance will be about $100 more for unlimited mods in Ballarat too!
Cheers

sabre:TPF&T?
GIO were heaps dearer last i checked,
i've gotta call shannons and young and cool...
driving history last 5 years:
3 at fault accidents (only 1, but not according to the insurance companies (long story))
1 suspension of license, due to speeding.
i know this is partly my own doing, but i'd really like to find a way around it just the same.[/color:post_uid0]

Mate, I get my arse kicked if I approve anything outside the normal guidelines. Our supervisors and underwriters are pretty strict on us.[/color:post_uid0]

I got a question for ya Sehnkhan, Im insured through JUSTCARS,which ive heard is under written my AAMI,since you work there maybe you can help me with something ??? I payed $1560 for my comprehensive cover with 60% no claim this year, exactly how far does the no claim % go up to with JUSTCARS??and what will i roughly be paying next year if i dont claim?? :D
Cheers :)[/color:post_uid4]

60% Sounds like the maximum no claim bonus, so I would not expect that your premium will change too much. In Victoria, we go off ratings, so you would be a rating 1 driver.
Some companies though do a 70% no claim. I don't think JCI do that though.[/color:post_uid0]

Those mods shouldn't add to your insurance, as long as you meet some guidelines. I asked NRMA about them, and they said no pro mofo. Things like your new exhaust must meet noise requirements, and some restrictions apply on lowering, but otherwise, you just let them know, and it don't add jack to the cost.
That was a bout 4 months ago, don't know if they've changed.[/color:post_uid0]
would justcar insurance offer those "lifetime NCB" thing? since they are part of aami?![/color:post_uid0]

Nup, they don't.
I may be leaving AAMI soon, have had some interest in another job. Have already had an interview, am waiting for the news :)[/color:post_uid0]

Youd think that if JUSTCARS was underwritten by AAMI that you would get the lifetime NCB thingy :( that sux
I know that SUNCORP METWAY go upto 80% no claim, thats who i was with b4 but i went over my modification quota and they wouldnt re insure me :([/color:post_uid4]

man thats not all that bad, im paying $1400 premium, which doesnt sound all that bad, but its for a 91 SP, which NRMA are covering for less than $7000 compreh. thats, what, over 20% of the cars value each year. and thats mod-less in their eyes. ohh yeah and that includes my dads 60% no claim bonus!!!! ridiculous.
however NRMA are a good insurer (not to mention expensive) because they will repair ur pride and joy with new parts and not second hand parts like AMMI, thats why AMMI's cheaper usually.[/color:post_uid0]

Olympic.... Ive got a 90 SP with wheels zorst lowered and stereo all insured, im 20, and its costing me $1300 per year with my dads 60% NCB. Car is insured for $12000 - 170000kms! I'd have a bit of a go at it.... I whinged for ages, got big boss on the phone, and eventually they covered it for market price of $14000 (which dropped to $12000 last year).
In regards to the SP20, that price sounds a bit steep, but not too much. Mine is something like $2300 without NCB, and worth half as much as what u would be getting. Try "Young and Cool" insurance if u want a cheap deal, u just have to have a 3 point immobiliser and do a defensive driving course. first year works out the same price coz u gotta pay for those 2 things, but u have more fun doing it!
Cheers

Actually, i gotta add, NRMA have been fantastic. I had to make a claim, (they slapped a high risk driver excess on me for the next year tho) but didnt take up premium, i chose my repairer, got new parts, and the parts are under warranty for getting it done at an NRMA approved repairer (which i actually did use!). Another time I got hit up the rear by a truck, called NRMA that night, gave them the details, told me i could pick up a rental car tomorrow for free for two weeks, said to drop off my car to a repairer in the morning and they;d do everything. they did! Pretty good so far. Better than AAMI who accused my mate of stealing his own Celica to claim insurance for less than it was worth and stuck a PI on him for the next 4 weeks, eventually giving up and handing over the money![/color:post_uid0]

yeah i went in to the NRMA 2day cause they sent my insurance renewal forms and they wanted to drop the value of the car to about $5000 down from the $7000, but still keep the premiums at about $1200. but i got it all fixed in the end, althought the premiums are still high.
bradinho.... how in hell did u get them to cover ur astina for $14000 in the first place. the lady 2day brought out the car prices book and told me that the highest she could go for a 91 SP was $7500 or somehing like that. i was shocked.
is urs just insured for that much cause u got the wheels and other stuff done??? she also said that any mods wouldnt increase the premiums because of risk, but they it would increase the value of the car and therefore the premiums would go up.
btw with 'young and cool' i seem to remember reading that u have to park ur car at ur place of residence every nite or by a certain time, or something along thoes lines. i cant really remember[/color:post_uid0]
think brad sweet talked the lady operator......... :p[/color:post_uid0]

Eric - she had a moustache. I was trying not to stare, and i felt sorry for her, so maybe i was a wee bit on the 'nice' side :D
Mods didnt do anything to insurance, except that if my cars gets stolen i get an extra $1000 on top of that for the stereo. I live in 2120, which is listed as pretty safe. They didnt care about alarms, immobilisers, driving courses etc which is pretty bad, coz i figure a car that has less chance of getting damaged/ stolen would have a lower premium.... i guess i was wrong![/color:post_uid0]

Yeah, that's what sh!ts me about NRMA, having a car alarm, imobiliser etc doesn't do jack. They woun't insure some vehicles (ie WRX) unless they have one, but it doesn't reduce the amount any. I have been told that they are looking at changing that in the future though, but I wouldn't be holding my breath[/color:post_uid0]

Insurance companies usually only drop the premiums for people with alarms/imobilisers when the car is a high risk for theft vehicle,ie excels, marages and stuff, cause they are so easy to steal ???[/color:post_uid2]

I'm with NRMA too...got a '92 SP and it's costing me $900 full comprehensive. *Insured for $12K, and I live in Canberra...which for a 24 year old seems like I'm getting a screamer of a deal.
BUT (isn't there always one!)
I got all this organised before de-mutualisation of NRMA...I've heard truckloads of horror stories regarding NRMA since the dubious de-mutualisation...there was actually a petition floating around canberra for people that had been screwed by NRMA since de-mutualisation...yep, it's that bad. *NRMA have apparently stopped being so helpful to people...claims are now much more of a pain in the butt. *Thankfully I've not had to test this, but I know people that have... *
The effect on premiums has been exactly the same. *Since I'm about to turn the magical age of 25, I have been enquiring as to what effect this has...the answer? Nothing. *Apparently NRMA no longer have the magical 25 year age price drop. *You just lose the <25 excess. *I thought this was ludicrous, so asked what price I'd have to pay if I stopped this policy and took out another at 25, and I'd have to pay over $1,000!!
I suppose all I'm trying to say from this is that NRMA probably isn't the best yard-stick for this discussion, 'cause they seem to be rightly screwed up! *[/color:post_uid9]
yeah, peter (izgood) should be able to tell you how "helpful" nrma is.... ???[/color:post_uid0]

yeah i was just wondering how much the excess is for u boys?? mines $850, $450 basic excess and $400 under 25 excess. if u increase the excess can u decrease the premiums?? just a thought. still wondering why im payin so much 4 only $7000 cover.[/color:post_uid0]
