well, since the astina is just sitting there, i've been messing with it (read: pulling things apart)
and i've made myself some new speedo dial faces, as i've never really liked the standard black ones. These are full replacement - not slipons like the EL dials - which means i had to remove the needles.
Fig. 1: how i wanted the dials to come out:
[img:post_uid0]http://hrdwrbob.net/mca/uploads/rupewrecht/astina_dials.jpg[/img:post_uid0]
Redrawn in Adobe Illustrator with a new font and a few other bits and pieces. And i like the black centres. So there :p
Fig 2: the mockup of the dials
[img:post_uid0]http://hrdwrbob.net/mca/uploads/rupewrecht/astina_dials_finaltest_1.jpg[/img:post_uid0]
The Silver faces are cut out of vinyl and stuck onto a red film 'gel' (basically thick red acetate) with the black ontop of that. on the reverse is a black version of the design, as the silver alone is too transparent when lit up.
Fig. 3: the dials installed
[img:post_uid0]http://hrdwrbob.net/mca/uploads/rupewrecht/astina_dials_finaltest_3.jpg[/img:post_uid0]
installed in the dial cluster - and yes they need a clean (fingerprints etc). My speedo rings i'd already painted silver, and the needles red.

The finished product (more or less). there's a white glow on the rhs dials as i haven't pushed my needles on hard yet, as i need to calibrate them. Oh, and the needles are a lot brighter, it's just the photo. And the light is more a blood red - not pink :p
just thought i'd keep you up to date... :)[/color:post_uid0]
ITS PINK![/color:post_uid0]

backlit 'astina': yeah could do that easily.
oh, the current manufacturing process (hah!) means that the fog light/high beam/fuel light all become the same color as the backlight - in this case, red.
[b:post_uid0]IF[/b:post_uid0] i do make these to order, the backlight color [i:post_uid0]and[/i:post_uid0] the face color will be your choice, but design will remain the same (or changes will be minimal) but most likely without the black centres (as i'd like to keep that for myself)
and fitment would be up to you, as would removal or your speedo needles.
cost? under $150 i'd say. haven't really thought about it![/color:post_uid0]

Do you have a file handy there Dan that i can use to pick and choose colours?? I wouldn't mind seeing what the CarbonFibre looks like on there with blue numbers... [only thing is i'd like to keep the green for my car, as it [i:post_uid0]is[/i:post_uid0] green]
oh...BTW I love the "00" and not just one "0", imagine what you can put at the 7km'h mark... *:;):

Silly question.
How did you get the red to come through the silver.
Did you actually stamp the vinyl so that it cut out
all the numbers/marks ??
Another question with the spots/high beam. If you
cut a rectangle out around where those are on the
red or blue film before joining with the vinyl. Couldn't
you then add a different colour. It wouldn't need to be
spoton as the silver will cover it. You could swap
the cutout from the red film with blue dials and the
blue with the red dials.
Just a thought.

I would be interested.
Do you do BJ's too? Thought I'd try.
Why can't we get more BJ owners on the site?
Every man & his dog has a BA {sorry... a little frustrated perhaps?}
Well done Dan - nice job. Looks very nice![/color:post_uid0]

Yep, i've got a link somewhere that lists about 150 colors -here (http://www.ccslightsound.com.au/cgi-bin/cimpublic/retrieve.cgi?catalog_id=1.1.5.1&dbname=consumables). They're reasonably accurate, mine is 026 - bright red.
Mal, yep, can do the silver & blue no probs. And yes, the numbering is lasercut out of the vinyl.
I could do the highbeams/fogs in the correct colors, but you would see the join of the backlight underneath the vinyl sticker - that's why i left mine red. but i can try..
i can do BJ Astinas, but i'd need to borrow someone's dial cluster for a few days, as i need the originals to get the markings calibrated.
[b:post_uid0]But[/b:post_uid0] i'm not sure i'm making any more atm. but it's a 99% chance i will :)[/color:post_uid0]

I get what you are saying. If only the vinyl was a
bit harder and not like contact and the red was the
stick on stuff would be easy.
Whatever works mate.

yeah, that's what i meant! i should have said the adhesive was too adhesivey heh
Coz these are fkn sticky - there's absolutely no way of moving them once stuck, but i know how to get around that :;):[/color:post_uid0]

Silly question, is it possible to get a copy of the file that you made the dials in? I would love to make a set, but rather than re measure all of my current design, life would be alot easier if I could get a copy of the one you made :-)
I know its probably a bit cheeky to ask, but thought i'd try my luck.

You would be best buying a cluster from a wrecker. Choose one with low km's  The sender is the same.
This will let you fit the dials at your leasure and not be rushed. Also no need to re-calibrate the speedo. If your car beeps over 110km/h it should stop that also.
Rod
im pretty interested in it how much would it cost?
