Hey guys,
As always I am thinking of stuff I cannot afford. Recently I
have been thinking about upgrading my JVC head unit which
is the SX1000R which controls the JVC incar VCR player. With
the release of heaps of incar DVD players have been thinking
I don't really need the VCR controller as the JVC solution in
DVD is a 1din unit for the dash and not a rear stacker solution
which the existing unit may have controlled. Anyway the
price of the DVD players it like right up there so I was thinking
about the PS2 which the prices have fallen a lot (I own 1
anyway). I have also seen software to enable them to play
MP3's and in the future there will be the hard disk to go in the
expansion slot. So you go games console, DVD, MP3, remote
control etc etc. Those that know how would you mount the
box so that it wouldn't kill the harddisk whilst driving or using
the DVD player which has no ESP.

I believe there's a couple of guys running PS2s for the DVD facility mostly at caraudioaustralia.com so I'll ask a Q for ya and let you know. They've done it, not guessing.....[/color:post_uid0]

I think so Primo as the hard disk has to be to save files and
more than just game saves. The PS2 also has USB/Firewire
(not sure which) connections *so you have to be able to
use them to download stuff to the hard disk. *Its all hearsay
till sony release the hard drive.

ha ! another question i can answer.
Let me just go thru the relevant items in my current setup :
-In dash TV
-PS2
-Dedicated 40gig hard drive for mp3s. ( standard computer hard drive )
I havnt had the chance to use the ps2 in the car much, as I havnt been able to drive for the last month ( well i wasnt *supposed* to drive :;): ) , but so far I havnt had it skip at all. Even the old playstation never jumped/skipped etc ( which was in the car for that big nsw cruise ). Even while friends play while I drive on Melbourne's notoriously ****ty, pot-holed roads, it runs fine !
The hard drive hasnt been in the car for a while coz a circuit was dodgy. It worked fine, no probs, no skipping, no damage to the drive etc. Basically, the unit is a mp3 player, it has a thing that u stick a computer hard drive in, and it works like a cd stacker, u take it out, plug it into the comp and copy the mp3s across ( the comp sees it as a normal hard drive ). Then u stick it in a thingy in the car and there's a little display/controller unit that sits up front. Worked Great !!!! I had most of my music collection in the car at all times, no carrying around cds etc. I've just gotta get the circuit replaced ... eventually :)
40gig is a lot of music :D
So yeh, Im running a system very similar to what ur talking abt, and I've had no problems whatsoever :)

oh duhhhhh, maybe i should mention how they're installed !? lol
umm the ps2 and the old ps have so far has been free-floating either under the passenger's seat, on the back seat, or on the raised floor in the back seat ( the old ps fit just nicely there ). If I didnt have a passenger airbag, i may have mounted it in the upper glove box.
The hard drive was on metal brackets, hanging from the underside of the back shelf.

And the PS2 is run from a 12v-240v inverter yes ??
Sounds quite easy then. I just need to buy a TV
unit then.
Thanks
Mal[/color:post_uid1]
yep, its powered by an inverter I got from Jaycar for abt $80.
mind u, im sure your ride is a lot firmer than my stock suspension ... I dunno if that'll make any difference.
u could always mount the unit on a foam base of some kind which could take some of the shock perhaps ?

i got a quote the other day about putting my ps2 in the top glove box. i will fit but the air vent on the passenger side wont work cause they have to remove the pipe for it.[/color:post_uid0]
could u perhaps get a flexible pipe - the corrugated stuff perhaps - and run that around the ps2 so that u can still use that vent ?
U might like to ask them to lock it down to the support bar that runs thru the dashboard too maybe ? for extra security :) are u going to make it removable ? so u can take it out and still use it at home[/color:post_uid0]

ive sort of gone off the idea of the ps2 just cause i want mags now and the $2000 they were gonna charge me should be going towards them and ive allready spent too much on my stereo, but the ps2 would be great.[/color:post_uid0]
2 grand just to install the ps2 ?? sounds damn expensive !!! what were they going to do ?[/color:post_uid0]

i'd say there's a big chunk of labour in there, as you literally have to remove the whole dash to get that top glovebox out...
but obviously not $2k worth :;):[/color:post_uid0]

Mal - in regards to the HD in the PS2 exp slot, I asked a Sony contact and he reckons that there are probs with it, although they are trying to make it. He didnt know much bout it tho, only had really heard of it and knew it was being developed. Just the same as Sony were supposed to release 1 gigabyte memory sticks by now...... the havent got past 128mb![/color:post_uid0]

Maybe the Xbox is a better platform then. I do prefer
my PS2 but if they cant make the extra's work might
have to switch over.
Thanks for the info

G'Day,
*For you guys wanting to mount computer hard disks in your cars, mount them on their sides, that way, if(when) you hit a pothole, the heads of the disk won't 'crash' on the platter, f@#$ing up your drive and data.
If you are using a notebook hardrive, it shouldn't matter how it's mounted, as they are designed to handle shocks and bumps etc.

well i can tell you i used to be a big supporter of the ps2 in the car but recently i have seen wonderful stuff done with xboxs
remember the xbox is a pc... you can simply get a bigger hdd install a mod chip to run linuxbios (ie run media players, visualizations for your screens) and still play dvds, games and the great thing i have seen is:
as it is a pc... get longer cables from a pc shop... put your dvd drive in the dash, the remote infrared next to your head unit, the xbox stored in the boot.. everything all over the place... looks sick when its done in custom fibreglass mouldings

Im using the PS2 as my DVD player plugged into a AVX7000 Pioneer screen. Works perfectly, and the controller fits in the cup holders. The brain for the TV sits under the driver seat and i can just unplug the PS2 to use at home with ease. The quality is perfect, and it doesnt skip when you hit bumps.
My TV is 12 months old and i have noticed that most of them come with a built in dvd/cd player now so perhaps the effectiveness has lessened. Mine is a separate screen brain and stacker.
The only other draw back is powering the ps2, i use a inverter from jaycar which was about $100 that sits under the seat and you just plug the 240 volt power plug into it.

hmmmm i'm thinking of doing a car puter... either that or hook up turbo... sooo hard to choose!!! i'm wanting touch screen, mounted in dash.... running through a new headunit (accepting of aux) or straight to dedicated amps.....
i'm thinking dedicated HU, so cd's can still be played, but then i might as well just get an in dash DVD player.... soo hard to choose!!!
car puter will fit nicely in glovebox, and can be piped easily from outside air (cooler air etc..)

i was sold on the idea off a xbox over ps2 because off the hdd an chip r upgradeble an u can store all ur music an sum movies on it so no need to carry that wallet off cds around
as for installing ,it fits under the seat an with front load is easy to access
i have one in my car i would more then welcome any interest an help you as much as i can
it does run off a 12v-240v convertor mine is a 100amp from jaykar about 80-100 dollars
